How in the world...

...did I get fans for Spirit of Fire to keep reading past the first couple of chapters?

Seriously.

The writing sucks. I've been doing a little proofreading before uploading chapters to Dejana's archive, and I'm just amazed that people actually decided to keep reading after getting through Ch. 1. Personally, if I had come across that fic as a reader, I probably would have stopped reading right after the first scene with Saburo, Takara, and Miyuki. (The prologue doesn't count because that was written later, when my writing for the story had improved.)

Oh, well. I guess people liked the idea well enough that they were willing to trudge through it.

At least the later chapters are somewhat better written. ^_^

I ask myself the same question on a lot of my stuff, honestly, except that I have to turn it backwards for some stories: "Why are people still reading this? It's terrible!" Trust me, though, I know the feeling. I just wrote a piece of garbage this very evening. -_-

I feel the same way about "Against All Odds," if that helps.

Hey, I liked it enough to keep going and eventually volunteer to be your editor, what are you saying?! :P

Beginnings tend to be slow, fact of fiction.

Ah, but did you keep reading because of the quality of the writing or because of the plot and characters?

My guess? Plot and characters. :P Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the writing for the first couple of chapters just isn't as good as it could have been. *sigh*

Yeah, I was interested as to where the plot would go, but I didn't look at the writing and go "AAH, bad prose, run away!" either. :P

If the story is good, you overlook minor flaws because you are sucked into the story.

And for some of us...it has to be really bad to notice.
