Remember earlier this year, when I mentioned I had started a Percy/Penelope Christmas fic set during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets but had decided to put it on hold until it was closer to Christmas? Well, even though I just remembered its existence a little over a week ago, I actually managed to finish it! Private Christmas has been posted at all the usual places, including my writing journal, [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell. I wish I could have spent a little more time on it before posting, but I wanted to get it out before Christmas, so I hope you enjoy it as is. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

First off, Chapter 27 of Melting Ice has been posted in the usual places. I've also updated [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell so it is now up-to-date. I didn't realize I was so behind on posting things there!

Now, onto the main point of this entry... The past few days, I've been thinking about getting an e-reader. I love having physical books, especially manga, but it is getting to the point that I'm running out of places to put them! An e-reader would definitely help with that. Plus, there are some out of print manga volumes I want that are very expensive to buy used (if you can even find them) but are easy and cheap to buy digitally. I just don't know what kind to get. An iPad would probably be best, but they're out of my price range. Besides, I don't need anything fancy. I can play music and use apps on my iPod touch, so I basically just want something I can read books, manga, and magazines on. At the moment, I'm leaning toward a Nook, particularly the Nook HD+ 9" tablet. Yeah, I know what I just said about not needing anything fancy, but at only $150, it seems like a pretty good deal, and I like that it has a larger screen size like the iPad. (Probably easier to read manga on.) My one concern is that I'm not sure how much longer Barnes & Noble is going to stay in business. If they shut down, what will happen with the Nook? So, I'm also eyeing the Kindle Fire HD. The screen is only 7", but, eh, it is a little cheaper than the Nook HD+, and I have more confidence in the company. And there's also the basic Kindle and Nook to consider. The prices are much more to my liking (under $100), and like I said, I don't need the frills...but I do kinda want some color, which the basic e-readers don't have. Gah, I don't know!

Anybody out there have experience with either a Kindle or a Nook? Have you read manga on them, and do they look okay on a smaller screen? Any thoughts on which kind I should get? Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Finally! Chapter 26 of Melting Ice is done and posted at the usual places. Seems like rewatching the series gave me the kick I needed to finish it.

Now, to reward myself, I'm going to install the Sims Medieval game that just arrived from Amazon and relax a bit before trying to figure out what the heck Chapter 27 is going to be about...

I'm a week late announcing it, but Chapter 24 of Melting Ice is posted at the usual places.

And...that's about it to report. This week is the figure skating world championships, but since we no longer get Universal Sports, I won't be able to see any of it until the two hour recap show on NBC the Saturday after next. *sigh* Still keeping my eye on the results, though, and hoping the Americans do well enough to earn an extra men's and ladies' spot in next year's Olympics. (Might be tough for Max and Ross to pull off considering their current standings, but Ashley and Gracie still have a fighting chance, I think, especially if Gracie skates her free like she did at Nationals.)

*crosses fingers*

Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

Nothing much to report, except that Salvation has been posted at the usual places. It really more appropriate for Halloween instead of Valentine's, but I hope you'll read anyway! ^_^

Chapter 23 of Melting Ice is posted at the usual places, finishing off the backlog of chapters I had already completed. Now it's back to actual writing. Hopefully I can get the next chapter done by March.

Salvation -- my AU Sailor Moon vampire story -- is also pretty much done. By the way, the position of beta reader is still open if anybody is interested.

And...that's pretty much it, I guess.

- I think we've settled on Angel for the new kitty's name. Still not sure if it's a boy or a girl, but fortunately Angel works for both.

- Chapter 21 of Melting Ice has been posted at the usual places -- and one of the main pairing finally realizes their feelings for the other! (About time...)

- My brother-in-law's Christmas gift is on its way, thank goodness! Don't know what the hold up was. Now all I have left is to get a present for my sister. She was pretty specific about what she wanted: either a 13-inch non-flimsy laptop case (which seems to be impossible to find) or a purple sparkly or metallic case for the iPhone 5 she thinks her husband is giving her for her birthday next week. (I hope she's guessed right, because I'm planning to go to Best Buy this weekend, and if they have one, that's what she's getting -- unless by some miracle they do have the type of laptop case she wants.)

- Exciting news from Anime News Network: Yuu Watase's Arata: The Legend Gets Summer TV Anime. Arata is one of my favorite current manga series, and I've been hoping it would get an anime. (It would be pretty awesome if Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden got an anime as well, especially since it's a couple of chapters from ending.)

- Speaking of manga and anime, it's that time again -- Right Stuf's Twelve Days of Savings sale! It's no lie that I've been waiting all year for this. In fact, I actually haven't ordered anything at all from them this year so far, due to wanting to save my money for the sale. I'm going to splurge like I've never splurged before, and I'm not going to feel guilty about it at all.

- Oh, and I sent out my Christmas cards yesterday, but if you still want to request one, that's fine. Just comment to my card post a couple of entries down and I'll be happy to send you one!

I've decided it's time to start reading a new manga series. Several of the series I'm currentiy collecting have ended or about to end. I just need the last two volumes of Kobato., the upcoming last volume of Story of Saiunkoku (*sniffle* I want more, dangit!), and Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden is just a couple of chapters away from ending in Japan, so there will only be two or three more volumes to collect of that. It seems like a perfect time to start something new, but I can't decide! What do y'all think I'd like best? (Check out My Manga List to see what I've already read.) Suggestions not in the poll are also welcome. Thanks!

[Poll #1877618]

In other news, I posted Ch. 20 of Melting Ice at the usual places.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Chapter 19 of Melting Ice has been posted at the usual places. I've also begun posting Against The Rules over at AO3. For some reason, I completely forgot about it when I posted the rest of my stories there!

Another double dose of meme questions:

23. Best manga/anime villain

He may be the protagonist of his series, but I gotta say the best manga and anime villain in my opinion is Light Yagami from Death Note. He utterly fascinates me with his belief that he is on the side of justice, despite the fact that he becomes one of the most prolific serial killers in history. That dichotomy within him makes him an interesting character to observe and puts him a cut above most other villains, who tend to be evil just because. Plus, he's definitely smarter than the majority of anime/manga villains out there!

24. The best long manga/anime series

Manga - Easy, a tie between Fruits Basket and NANA. (Criteria: Over twenty volumes.)

Anime - Kaleido Star, of course! Honorable mentions go to Super GALS, Card Captor Sakura, Fushigi Yuugi, Sailor Moon, Fullmetal Alchemist (both series), and Code Geass. (Criteria: Over fifty episodes.)

First off, Politically Incorrect is posted at dotmoon and FF.net. (I'll post it AO3 either later today or tomorrow; I didn't have time yesterday.). Decided just to post the whole thing as a long one-shot, since it really wasn't set up to be a chaptered story. If you read it before, I made a few really minor changes, but also added a One Year Later scene at the end that you may want to check out.

The reason why I didn't have time to post it at AO3 is because yesterday Mom and I went to the movies -- we saw Hope Springs, which was pretty good -- then did a little shopping. Of course, that meant manga for me! At Barnes & Noble, I picked up Sailor Moon Vol. 7, Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden Vol. 10 (finally, a new volume!), and the first 3-in-1 omnbus edition of Skip-Beat, which I've always wanted to read but thought was too long. Actually, I still think it's too long, but you know me, I'm always a sucker for an omnibus... *laughs* We also went to Half-Price Books. For once, though, they didn't have anything I was interested in, so I decided to satisfy my craving for bargain-hunting out-of-print manga on the Amazon Marketplace. I ordered Vols. 4 & 7 of Othello, Vol. 6 of Doubt! (all three missing volumes from series I bought previously at HPB), and Clannad: After Story Collection 2. (You may remember that I got the rest of the series for ridiculously cheap during Right Stuf's holiday sale last year.) Also bought some newer manga: Arata: The Legend Vol. 9, Kimi ni Todoke Vols. 8 and 9, and Kobato. Vols. 2-4.

So, yeah, I'm going to be in manga heaven for the next couple of weeks. ^_^

I'm getting really bad about doing my meme questions, so today will be another two-for-one. They're related anyway.

19. A manga/an anime that you disliked at first but came to enjoy later on

Hmm, this is a tough question. I guess I would have to say the manga series Phantom Dream did get a lot better later in the series. I didn't really care for it at all in the beginning. As for anime.... Maybe Gundam Wing? It was a bit of a struggle to get through the first half, but past the recap, I enjoyed it more, although I never really came to love it. It's a pretty average series.

20. A manga/an anime you started out enjoying but ended up not liking as much

Ah, this question is much easier to answer! I've already mentioned Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic in reply to a similar question from this meme, but for anime, it's gotta be Kare Kano. It was so, so good until the last couple of episodes! Unfortunately, the ending is so terrible that it's tainted the rest of the series for me.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Gah, I really did mean to update late last week, but I kept forgetting. Oh, well. For those who are interested, Chapters 6 and 7 of No Longer Alone have been posted at the usual places, completing the story. I'm planning to post it over at [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

Now, onto today's meme questions. Yes, plural. These next two questions aren't very interesting IMO, so I'm going to post both at once.

17. A manga/an anime that you feel embarrassed about liking

None. Maybe some I'm embarrassed about watching/reading, but not liking.

18. Favorite BL/yuri couple

Not really my thing, but if I had to choose... Kurogane/Fai from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Haruka/Michiru from Sailor Moon, I guess.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Man, lately I only seem to remember to update this thing whenever I have a new writing update to announce! (Gotta work on that.)

Anyway, Chapter Five of No Longer Alone has been posted at the usual places. Just two more chapters after this, then I'll probably start posting Politically Incorrect with the proper, real ending that I wasn't able to complete before the deadline. I can't decide if I should post it in chapters or as a one-shot, though. Thirteen thousand words is long, but it isn't that long; I have three longer one-shots posted. Thoughts from those who have already read what I posted in this journal? Do you think it would work best as a one-shot?

Onto today's question!

15. The saddest scene

I don't like these questions that make you pick the -est of something; they're too hard! But the two that immediately came to mind for me were both Sailor Moon scenes. From the anime, the death of Neptune and Uranus near the end of Sailor Stars (with Nephrite's death coming in at a really close second), and from the manga, Pluto's death scene during the Black Moon arc.

There are some others I could mention, but I don't think I will because they would probably be considered major spoilers for various series. (I don't mind talking about those SM scenes, since most of you reading this are already familiar with the series, and they're hardly considered spoilers any more, anyway.) I will mention, however, that one of them involves a character featured in the icon I'm using for this entry. If you're a Fushigi Yugi fan, you know exactly what scene I'm talking about. *sobs*

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Oops, I kinda forgot about this thing. Well, before getting to today's question, just want to note that the fourth chapter of No Longer Alone has been posted at the usual places.

Now, the meme.

14. A manga/an anime that makes you cry.

Oh, man, there are tons of series that make me cry, but I'll only pick one for each.

For anime, I'm going to say Pretear, because it's the strength of its tear-jerking finale that I consider it one of my all-time faves. I'm pretty much a sobbing mess whenever I finish watching it. Sobbing. Mess.

Manga... Well, manga doesn't tend to make me cry nearly as much as anime does, but I want to mention Rasetsu, which is a title that isn't very popular but I love. It has one of my favorite manga endings -- very bittersweet, and, oh, so cry-worthy.

Quick fanfiction update: Chapter 18 of Melting Ice is finally posted at the usual places.

13. The most epic scene ever

Oh, man, I've been dreading this question! My gut is telling me to say the last three episodes of Sailor Moon, but that's definitely more than a scene! (Still epic, though!) Hmm, Gurren Lagann has a pretty amazing battles, and so does Evangelion... Oh, the start of Instrumentality in the End of Evangelion movie, with the giant Rei! You really can't get more epic than the end of the world, can you? Yeah, let's go with that. I'm not sure if it's really the most epic scene I've ever seen, but I think it's at least one of the top five.

Days To Come )

How did I get sucked into watching the Summer Olympics? I was only going to watch the opening ceremony. I don't care about the summer events; I prefer the winter events. Well, okay, there was a brief time when I was younger when I had a mild interest in gymnastics, but it didn't stick for very long. I haven't watched a competition in years. Yet here I am, glued to the TV set every night to watch gymnastics and swimming! I'm blaming my brother-in-law. :P When we visited last weekend, practically all we did was watch the Olympics since my sister was so busy with her schoolwork.

Oh, well.

I'll get back to the 30 Day meme tomorrow, but for today, I'm taking a break to do another meme that I snagged from s[livejournal.com profile] samuraiter

Quick note before getting to today's question: I settled on a title for my Sora/Leon Kaleido Star fic, so I can finally start posting it. No Longer Alone can be found at ff.net, AO3, and .moon. I'll probably be updating it once a week, since the story is basically finished.

05.A manga/anime you would recommend to everyone

I talk up Kaleido Star every chance I get. More people need to see it, darn it! It's just plain awesome.

As for manga... Well, there's a lot of manga I would recommend; it's hard just to pick one. It would be easy to say either Fruits Basket or NANA, since they're my favorites, but FB is sadly out of print now and NANA is on indefinite hiatus. So I'm going to go with Ceres: Celestial Legend. It has beautiful artwork, a great combination of drama, humor, and romance, and it's an interesting take on the legend of the tennyo.

Chapter 17 of Melting Ice is posted at FF.net, AO3, and .moon.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Chapter 16 of Melting Ice is now posted at FF.net, .moon, and my writing journal, if anybody's interested. It'll be posted at AO3 whenever I get around to getting the rest of the story posted there. Right now I'm in the middle of submitting Spirit of Fire, but I'll probably do Melting Ice next.

I can't begin to tell y'all how glad I am to finally be done with this chapter! Not that it was difficult to write, exactly. I just wasn't very interested in the material, I guess. Yume's rival Dominique ended up becoming a much more important character than I expected, causing a bunch of trouble that wasn't in my original vision for her. She was supposed to be more of a Julie/Charlotte type character, but she ended up being more of a May instead! *laughs* But now that the Dominique subplot is more or less finished, I can move onto the real meat of the story. I really think I'm going to be able to accomplish my goal of finishing it by the end of the year, guys. I know I've been saying that for the past...oh, probably, three or four years, but this time I really believe it. A lot of the rest of the story is already written, including most of the next chapter. I plan to rewrite some scenes to take in account some of the new developments I added, but chapters should be coming out much faster now.*crosses fingers* I hope.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Here's your promised award fic: Worth The Wait. (Also found at all the usual places: FF.net, .moon, and AO3). I hope it really is worth the wait for you. ^_^ I really didn't mean to take this long to finish it.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Two writing updates today: the final chapter of my Kaleido Star fic Blood On His Hands and a one-shot for my Fruits Basket [livejournal.com profile] 15pairings claim called The Bride Wore.... (Kazuma Sohma/Saki Hanajima), which I should have finished a loooong time ago. (Seriously, I think I added like, a hundred words to finish it up. I just kept forgetting about it!) Both can be found at FF.net, .moon, and AO3.

Next I'm going to try to get a new chapter of Melting Ice up. There's no way I'm going to fulfill the goal I set last year of actually finishing that story by the end of year -- oh, man, I'm not even close! -- but I would like to get at least one more chapter up before New Year's.
