Hey, we actually got snow last night! Just a light dusting, but better than no snow at all.

Speaking of unexpected happenings, I have a new fic to share! In a new fandom, even! Yeah, I know, i know, I'm supposed to be working on Friends With Benefits, but I've been reading a lot of Yuri!! on Ice fanfics lately, and, well, I got inspired.

The Aftermath of Heartbreak (also at AO3)

I can't decide if I'm satisfied with the way it turned out or not, but it was pretty fun to write! And Mila/Georgi is a rare pair that needs more love, IMO.

It snowed! Just a little, but I'll take it. Actually, the first thing I did this morning was look out my bedroom window (which looks out onto the front yard) to see if it snowed as predicted and was kinda bummed because I didn't see a whole lot. There was just a light dusting on the ground right in front of the window. However, when I went to the livingroom and kitchen, you could see a lot more in the side and backyards. And since it's not supposed to get over twenty-seven degrees today, it'll probably stick around until tomorrow at least. Oh, and we might get more later this week! Squee!

Yeah, I really love the snow.

I also really loved the Oscars last night. Didn't do too great on my predictions (10 out of 24 right), but I did sweep all the acting awards, best director, and best picture, which I don't think I've ever done before. The musical performances were fantastic. I especially loved John Legend's and Common's performance of "Glory" from Selma and Lady Gaga's tribute to The Sound of Music.

On the fashion front, I was actually way more into what the guys were wearing this year instead of the women, which is...kinda strange. But it seemed like most of the women wore white (or silver, champagne, etc.) or black while some of the men actually broke away from the usual boring black tuxedo to embrace color. Eddie Redmayne's navy (yummy)! Neil Patrick Harris's various colors throughout the night (the marroon was my fave)! Jared Leto's powder blue (which, with his long hair, made him look like he was going to prom in the 70s, but, hey, at least it stood out)! David Oyelowo's amazing red (which he somehow pulled off really well)! Matthew McConaughey's gray (or silver or whatever that color was)! For the ladies, I think Reese Witherspoon probably wins my best dressed nod; I'm always drawn to black-and-white colorblock dresses. I also really liked Margot Robbie's black gown with the sheer sleeves and interesting necklace, Rita Ora's dark blue dress with gold brocade, Kerry Washington's peplum gown, Anna Kendricks' peach dress, Kelly Osbourne's black hi-low lace gown (LOVE the dress...the purple hair and colorful clutch, not so much), Rosamund Pike's red dress with the slit, Zoe Saldana's pale pink gown (how does she look that good after giving birth to twins just a few months ago?), Rosanna Arquette's black-and-white column dress (but hated her hair style), and Octavia Spencer's light blue gown with the fun train  Not too many fashion disasters this year. Even Lady Gaga's dress wasn't that bad minus those weird red gloves (and she looked stunning in another white dress for the Sound of Music number). When I first saw Gwyneth Paltrow's one-shouldered pink gown with the huge rose detail, I wasn't a fan, but looking back at pictures this morning, I actually rather like it. It's interesting, the color was beautiful on her, and her earrings are stunning! If I had to pick a worst dressed, though, I'd probably go with Marion Cotillard. The dress looked okay from the front, but I just saw a pic of it from the back, and it's really strange-looking.

So, my dad bought my mom a dachshund puppy as an early anniversary present. His name is Prince, which was actually the name of another dog we had about five years ago, but Mom said she didn't care. She's over the moon in love with him, but I can't say I'm too thrilled. I'm so not a dog person -- I can only stand being around them for a short period of time -- and this one is particularly annoying. He kept me up half the night with his yapping, and you can't walk anywhere without him almost tripping you because he gets right under your feet. *sigh* Maybe I'll like him better once he's better trained, but at the moment...

In other news, the Summer of Hell continues. The high today? Supposed to be 106. *dies* At least we're supposed to get down to the early nineties later in the week. Relief at last!

And to wrap things up, a little "Getting To Know You" meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] royalbk, if anybody wants to fill it out.

IT'S WAY TOO FREAKIN' HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summer needs to end, like, right now. I can't take much more of this. I don't even remember the last day when it hasn't gotten over 100 degrees. Maybe July? And according to the weather forecast I just saw, it's going to last at least another week. In fact, around Friday, the high is supposed to be 105. 105!

It's officially the hottest summer ever.

Boo, it didn't snow. :( Or if it did, it was at night and didn't stick. I'm rather bummed, but I guess it was too much to hope that it would happen three winters in a row.

Anyway, onto today's question!

24. Character with your favorite uniform/outfit

Oh, man, I've been dreading this question, because part of the reason I love Kaleido Star so much is the awesome costumes they get to wear in the shows. (That's also part of the reason I love figure skating so much. Coincidence? I think not.) So instead of picking an absolute favorite, you're going to get my top 10. I'm listing these in chronological order because I can't even rank them.

It's so cold!!! It's like twenty degrees here. I know that may not seem that cold to the people up North, but it is for southeast Texas! On a happy note, according to the forecast I saw this morning, there seems like there is a possibility of snow tomorrow night/Friday. *dances* If it does happen, that'll be the third winter in a row it has snowed here, which is just crazy. Whatever happened to global warming?

Anyway, onto today's question. As promised on Day 17, it's two-for-the-price-of-one!

22. Another OTP of yours

Sora Naegino and Ken Robbins

First off is the adorably sweet pairing of Sora and Ken.

One of the things I liked about Kaleido Star is the fact that the lead heroine doesn't fall in love with anyone. Don't get me wrong, I love romance, but it was a nice change of pace to have a story centered on a female character that didn't focus on her romantic relationship with a guy (or girl, as the case may be). As a bonus, with no (requited) canon pairings for Sora, fans can pretty much pair her up with anybody and make it believable. There are very few characters I can point to and say, "No, that relationship will never happen." I've read Sora/Leon stories -- heck, I even have one in the works right now -- Sora/Yuri stories, Sora/Layla stories... But I do have a definite preference, and that's Sora/Ken. (I have a story in mind for them, too. I recently got hit by a ton of plot bunnies for KS. -_-)

Much like my love for Chibi-Usa/Helios, one of the main reasons I love Sora and Ken is the strong friendship between them. I've said it a hundred times before, but I love it when friendships become something more and I think those tend to be the strongest types of relationships. Granted, Ken pretty much fell in crush with her at first sight, but I don't that that really diminishes the value of their friendship. Even if nothing romantic ever happened between them and Sora ended up with somebody else, I believe Ken would cherish his friendship with her regardless. It's not like he's friends with her just to get in her pants.

But of course I would love it if something romantic did happen between them, because they would just be so cute as a couple. Ken is so sweetly devoted to her, and even Sora's friends think they belong together. Their personalities also mesh well, and I feel like Ken's the character who really understands Sora the best. He looks after her and supports her in following her dreams. (Plus, their families -- the future in-laws -- already get along well with each other!)

As for Sora... Well, she's totally oblivious to Ken's feelings toward her, but as Ken says in one of the last episodes, (paraphrased) "The only thing that can captivate her right now is the stage." She's just not really interested in love at the moment, minus her minor crush on Yuri at the start of the series (which was more of a fangirl crush than a romantic one), but that doesn't mean that Ken's feelings for her are hopeless. I'm sure she'll eventually wise up to Ken's interest in her and realize he's her perfect match. ^_~

(Sorry, that's really the only romantic screencap of the two of them. It kind of sucks.)

Sarah Dupont and Kalos Eido

As for my third OTP, Sarah/Kalos are one of the very few canon couples in the series. It's such a shame that you don't get to see more of them together in the show, and even more of a shame that there's pretty much no fanfiction about them at all. (Seriously, does anybody know of one? I would love to read some!) They're a definite case of opposites attracting, but they suit each other so well.

Seriously, where is it? I've been waiting all day for it. Granted, the last I heard, it was supposed to really start in earnest right about now, but not even a snowflake in sight yet. *pouts* I WANT IT TO SNOOOOOOOOOW!

In other news, great ladies' short program!

Incredible. Simply incredible.

You know the drill -- Results! )

Ladies' short program is tomorrow night, meaning that the skating competition is almost over. *sigh* I'm not sure what I'll do with myself once it is, I've been so wrapped up in it. Is there life outside of skating? I don't remember it...

*laughs*

No, actually, I'm not that far gone. In fact, just watched the news and they're predicting SNOW tomorrow. Not a lot, mind you, but still! If it does, that'll be twice in one season; that never happens!

So crossing my fingers for that, and for Mirai Nagasu and Racheal Flatt to do well in their short programs tomorrow night. Go USA!

Brr!

I said I would post pics of the snow, and I did take a couple, but they're not really worth posting. The snow stuck, but it wasn't anywhere near as much as last year's snow. Lots of green still showing. Oh, well, it was still pretty just to watch it fall. Last year it snowed at night, so it was a bit hard to see unless you actually went outside. Today, I could just look at it from the front door, in the comfort of a warm and toasty house. (Of course, I did play a little in it. ^_^)

Who knows? Maybe we'll actually get some more snow once winter actually comes. That would be nice. Doubtful, but, hey, stranger things have happened!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
IT'S SNOWING!!!!!!

I can't believe it! This is the second year in a row. That never happens in southeast Texas. Usually it's more like once every four years (or whenever we get a hurricane). Now I'm regretting not buying a pair of gloves on Black Friday like I was tempted to. I was like, "Oh, what are the chances that it's going to snow this year?"

Evidently, pretty high!

Pictures to probably follow in the next entry. It just started, so there's nothing on the ground yet. Hopefully, it'll actually stick.

For now, I'm going to pop in Josh Groban's lovely, lovely Christmas album, make myself a cup of hot chocolate, and address Christmas cards while watching the snow fall.

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

It's snowing, guys. Snowing in southeast Texas.

*bounces up and down in glee*

Not only that, but it's like Christmas card snow. Seriously, it's sooo pretty outside. I have never seen it snow so much in my life! This is way better than the Christmas Eve snow of 2004.

It's just...gorgeous. That's the only word I can think of to describe it.

Unfortunately, while I did buy a cheap-o ($20) digital camera back when we got the new computer for just these times when I want to post something online, it didn't come with a flash, so it won't take pictures unless there's a lot of light. If the snow sticks until tomorrow morning, I'll try to take some pictures then, but for now, I give you...Frosty!

Isn't he pathetically cute? *laughs* Actually, there is probably more than enough snow on the ground to make a proper snowman, but I don't own any gloves, so this was the best I could do without giving myself frostbite. ^_^ He's now safe and cold in our freezer, in memorial of this wonderful snow.

*glomps everyone in sight*

Ah, it feels good to finally be back on-line again after all this time. You guys have no idea.

Anyway, Ike.

Everything's fine here. Thanks to everybody who expressed their concern in my previous entry. Mom and I did eventually evacuate to her brother's house when Liberty County was added to the mandatory evacuations list (although it took some crying on my part to convince her how scared I really was), but Dad stayed at home because of his horses. (Ironically, the reason why Mom really wanted to stay home -- the traffic -- was no problem at all this time. I guess since Liberty County was added so much later than the rest of the evacuated counties, we managed to miss it.) A side of our porch got messed up, and I now call our front yard the "Graveyard of Fallen Trees," but luckily none of the trees actually hit the trailer, thank goodness, which is more than I can say for my uncle's poor truck. A tree fell and broke his windshield, as well as dented the roof and a door. :(

Mom and I returned back home on the Tuesday afterwards to discover that Dad had actually bought us a generator from a friend of his. We all (even Dad) think he paid way too much for it ($1100), but I have to admit it was nice to be able to make our own ice, turn on a lamp and fan (although we got a cool front and didn't really need it), and even finish my Sailor Moon anime marathon. We actually got our electricity back that Friday, but that's when tragedy struck.

Our computer died.

I'm not really sure what happened. It just suddenly stopped working in the middle of logging on to the computer after the electricity returned. It might have been because in our rush to leave, I stupidly forgot to unplug it, or it might have just been the age of the computer -- it would have been seven years this December -- but thank goodness I was smart enough to back-up all my really important files while I was packing up. I still lost some stuff, like saved emails, links, etc, but it wasn't as big a loss as it could have been. (Still didn't keep me from sobbing for over an hour when I realized what happened, though.)

Mom had to work that weekend, so I had to wait until the following weekend until we were able to buy a replacement. Ended up spending the week really finishing up the SM marathon by watching PGSM and reading the manga, trying to keep busy until I had a computer again. (BTW, somebody really needs to rerelease the manga. My poor volume four is pretty much being held together by tape and staples now, and some of the others are getting to that point.)

The next weekend, Mom and I bought our new computer, along with a new living room suite (we've been needing one), a desk that would hold the new computer's honkin' big 24 in. monitor, a chair to go with it, and a new printer that was Vista compatible. Unfortunately, when the computer was set up, we discovered that it didn't come with AOL software. :( That meant my return to cyberspace was once again delayed while we waited for AOL to send us the software.

As you can imagine, I was getting really antsy at that point. *laughs* Starting a Card Captor Sakura marathon helped a little, but I practically stalked our mailbox, hoping the disc would come in soon. It finally came in today, and after fixing a little installation problem that prevented us from signing on, I am now officially back.

*parties*

Anyway, time to catch up on everything I missed while I was gone. See y'all around!

Gah!

Why did it have to rain so bad today of all days? Mom's on her birthday vacation this week, and today, we were going to have a girls' day out -- movie, shopping, and the like. I had been looking forward to today for weeks, but because of the stupid rain and possible flash flooding, we couldn't go.

*sigh*

Yeah, we're planning to try again tomorrow, weather permitting, but, still, I'm annoyed. I wanted to go today!

I just found out from the Someday's Dreamer community I belong to that Tokyopop will be releasing the English version of the manga in March. (http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?page=product&productid=3538) Yes! I have most of it scanlated, but it'll be nice to have an official version and finally see how it ends. Plus, at only two volumes long, I can get the entire series for a little over $20. How awesome is that? I can't wait!

Is it March yet?

In other news, last night, I had a dream that when I woke up this morning and looked out my bedroom window, it was snowing.

Of course, when I actually did wake up and looked out the window, all I saw was our neighbors' messy yard.

Pooh.

You know, it's rather ironic because if I had had the money to fly to Colorado when Crystle left last week like she wanted me to, my dream might have actually come true. I know it was snowing in Denver...not so sure about Colorado Springs.

I want to live somewhere where it snows! Sure, we had a beautiful white Christmas last year, but that was just a fluke of nature. Texas sucks.

A meme

Still no better news on Rita.

Anyway, here's a meme I took from Kerry. For some reason, the results they gave wouldn't show up right, so I decided just to post them normally.

LJ Interests meme results

Anime - My first taste of anime was Sailor Moon (well, actually, there was one movie that I didn't know was anime until later) over ten years ago, but now I'm a full-fledged anime nut, partially thanks to Netflix. As of right now, I have seen eighteen series in full, the first five episodes of Cowboy Bebop (waiting for the rest to become available), and I should be starting I My Me! Strawberry Eggs this week. My all-time favorite series are Sailor Moon, Pretear, Fruits Basket, Princess Nine, Card Captor Sakura, Someday's Dreamers, and Evangelion. As you can probably tell, I'm mostly a fan of shoujo anime, but I'm starting to expand my interests.

Card Captor Sakura - Cute, cute, cute, cute, cute. What else is there to say about CCS? It's just the type of series that makes you feel all warm and happy inside. Plus, Touya is HOT!

Chobits - My favorite manga (tied with Fruits Basket and Ayashi no Ceres) and the anime is pretty good too. It's really a rather thought provoking story, and while I sometimes disagreed with some of the ideas, it was well-done and very satisfying.

Everwood - Best. show. on. TV. That is all.

Figure skating - I've been a fan ever since the whole Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding scandal in 1994, though I've never personally been on the ice. (I would sooo fall right on my butt.) I try never to miss a competition, but unfortunately, most of them are now shown on ESPN, so I can't watch them as much anymore. My all-time favorites are Scott Hamilton, Tara Lipinski, Kurt Browning, and Sasha Cohen.

Fushigi Yugi - Even though I think the manga is entirely way too long, it's still pretty good. I like Chichiri, Hotohori, and Soi.

Imadoki - Yet another Watase Yuu manga series I'm a fan of. I'm a total Watase fangirl. ^_^

Music - How can anybody not like music? Does a person like that exist? Well, anyway, I'm mostly a fan of opera and Broadway, but I like mostly everything except rap and traditional country. Favorite artists include Josh Groban, Hayley Westenra, Sarah Brightman, Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, The Corrs, and Ace of Base.

Numb3rs - David Krumholtz. *drools* Oh, yeah, the show's pretty good too, but it's all about teh Charlie.

Princess Nine - Awesome baseball anime. Love it, love it, love it!

Oh, crap!

I do not like this. I do not like this at all.

Today, while I was watching my daily soaps, As the World Turns was interrupted by a news conference. They're planning a voluntary evacuation of Galveston Island starting tomorrow in case Tropical Storm Rita, which they're predicting might become a Category 3 hurricane, continues on its current path and hits Texas.

Please, no!

It hasn't even entered the Gulf of Mexico yet, so it's entirely possible that the course will change in the next five days (right now, the prediction is that it will hit Saturday morning), but I've just got this terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. This country does not need another big storm just a couple of weeks after Katrina. Granted, it won't be as devastating as what happened in New Orleans, especially since Galveston has solid plans in case of a hurricane and the city seems to be erring on the extreme side of caution, but if it hits Texas, it's going to be a major blow to the oil industry. Gas prices are going to be insane (which makes me suddenly so grateful that I don't drive). Not to mention that if Galveston is hit, that means Houston will most likely get some of it too. What about all the Katrina evacuees who have come here? Will they have to be evacuated yet again, just as they have begun trying to pick up the pieces of their lives?

Then, of course, I'm scared to death about the possibility losing our trailer. When Katrina hit, Mom said that she might be willing to stay behind in a Category 1 or 2 storm, but that if a hurricane got up to a Category 3, we were going up to Nacogdoches and stay with my sister and her roommate at their condo. The trailer survived Alicia, which was another Category 3 storm, but that was over twenty years ago when it was only a few years old. I don't think it could survive another storm like that, especially in the condition it's in now.

This is just terrible!

I'm so scared...
