A couple of weeks ago, Mom bought one of those converter boxes for our living room TV. She tried to hook it up, but we weren't getting any signals on our indoor antenna. It looked like we would need an outdoor antenna to get any digital signals, so when Dad asked her what she wanted for her birthday (coming up at the end of next month), that's what she asked for.
Well, yesterday, she decided it would all just be a big hassle and told Dad that she didn't want the antenna after all. Instead, when the change came next year, we would just be TV-less, a situation I was less than thrilled about, unless I wanted to give up the Internet so we could afford cable.
Needless to say, that was an unacceptable solution.
So, today, I decided I would try hooking up the converter box, this time on the TV in my room (which, keep in mind, is older than the one in the living room).
Guess what?
I got signals!
Not all of them, granted. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a signal for Channel 2, 8, 20, and 39, most of which aren't terribly big losses. Channel 2 is the NBC affiliate, which if you read this journal regularly, you know we rarely got anyway. I was hoping that would change with digital, but, oh, well. Channel 8 is PBS, which I have to admit is a bit disappointing but I can easily live without. Channel 20 was the former UPN affiliate that is now My Network TV. They only had crappy shows anyway, so good riddance. Channel 39, the WB affiliate, is the only really major loss, and even that's not too bad. Last season, I was only watching Gossip Girl, Smallville, and Reaper, and if worse comes to worse, I can always just wait for boxsets to come out and rent them from Netflix. None of them are I-must-watch-or-I-will-die shows for me, anyway, so I can wait. At least no matter what happens, I'm sure to have 11 (CBS), 13 (ABC), and 26 (FOX).
Only problem now is that when I unhooked the converter box with the intention of trying my luck with the living room TV -- I think I might have figured out why Mom wasn't getting any signals when she set it up -- I apparently messed up my DVD set-up. (I had to unhook it to use the converter box, which will be quite annoying when I want to switch.) It looks like everything is plugged in where it is supposed to be, so I don't know what the problem is. *scratches head* Guess I'll just have to wait until Mom comes home and see if she can figure out what I did wrong.
EDIT: I now have it hooked up in the living room. Yay! And in the living room, though I can't get Channel 26, I can get 39 (although the picture isn't the greatest). I also managed to get 2 and 20 for, like, two minutes when I first hooked it up, but the signals are lost again. *sigh* Oh, well, maybe once Mom sees how really good the pictures are on the stations that have really strong signals, I can convince her that it'll be worth the hassle to get the outdoor antenna. If not, at least once we buy another box for my TV, we'll get all the really important channels between the two.
