Day 26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

The oddest thing I've researched? Hmm, maybe tasseography? (That would be the reading of tea leaves.) I first looked into it for Written in the Tea Leaves, a short Helios/Chibi-Usa fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly, but the subject will actually come up again in Melting Ice. (I decided that since Fool used Tarot cards in the first season of Kaleido Star and astrology in the second, tasseography would be his gimmick in MI.) As for the most fun, that would probably be figure skating. Of course, I already knew quite a bit since I'm such a huge fan, but I needed to research the more technical aspects for Melting Ice.

Days To Come )

Last night, I remember having a dream about a sequel to my fic Spirit of Fire, but now I can't remember what it was going to be about! And it was really awesome, too. ... I think.

Oh, well, it's not like I need yet another story idea, right?

Speaking of SOF, I finally uploaded the extra scenes I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly  over at FF.net and .moon. I wanted to wait to post them around Christmastime, since one of the scenes takes place on Christmas, but I really should have uploaded them last week to .moon. It slipped my mind that uploading them this week would mean they wouldn't appear on the New Stories page until the Sunday after Christmas. *headdesk* Well, I guess it doesn't really matter.

P.S. What is with LJ smushing everything together in a big paragraph the first time I post? It's done that for the last couple of entries. Kinda annoying.

So, I finished the third story for Rei month at [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly , and Dissonance and Resonance is now posted in my fic journal. Unlike the other two Rei stories I wrote, this one does not take place in the "Spirit of Fire" universe, although it's still dealing with her family, and is pretty much a mish-mash of anime, manga, and PGSM canon. It also has the distinction of being the first story I've written in which Rei's father is not portrayed in a sympathetic light. Oh, you can probably find some sympathy if you read between the lines a little, but it's definitely not obvious.

Unfortunately, I was not able to reach my goal of five entries, but, oh, well.

Also posted at [profile] oyster_shell  is Gift from the Heart,  a Fruits Basket story I wrote a while back for [livejournal.com profile] 15pairings  and a .moon challenge that I pretty much completely forgot about until now. *laughs* I'll be posting it at .moon and fanfiction.net sometime this week as well. (FYI: The pairing is Ritsu/Mii, if you're interested.)

To round out this entry, I wrote a totally awesome scene for To Be By Your Side today. I'm tempted to post it, but it contains major spoilers for the story, and I'm not sure I want to let the cat out of the bag just yet, so to speak. Normally, I don't really care and will freely give out plot points for my stories, whether you want to know them or not, but I'm feeling protective of this story for some reason, so you'll just have to wait to see the finished product. :P

In my last entry, I said I would post my entries for [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly  this weekend if I managed to finish the third one I was working on. Well, I didn't finish it, but I decided to post the two completed entries anyway, because it's Father's Day, and one of the fics was ironically appropriate for the day.

So, I present to you Entering Fatherhood, a fic about Keitaro struggling to accept the fact that he is, in fact, a father, whether he likes it or not, and Christmas Treasures, a WAFF-y holiday story in which Keitaro is *gasp* a little romantic, and Rei actually has one nice childhood memory. (FYI: Yes, both are "extra scenes" for "Spirit of Fire". You don't need to be familiar with SOF to enjoy them, but you'd probably get more out of them if you are.)

Enjoy!

Really have got to start updating this thing more often. Don't know what my problem is. It's not that I don't have ideas for entries; it's just that when I get online, I tend to focus on reading Sims stories and I just...forget, I guess.

Anyway, what's new in the life of Yume? Well, nothing much, honestly. Things are still progressing well with To Be By Your Side, although I have gotten to my first little "bump", so to speak. It's nothing major; it's just that I'm now at the ceremony scene, and I'm not exactly sure how I want to write it. :( I'm tempted just to skip ahead and write some of the future scenes, but I'm trying really hard not to do that this time around, even if it's a one-shot and doesn't really matter since I can't post it until it's finished anyway. (I admit I did do a little screenwriting for a future scene, but I consider that planning ahead, not actually skipping ahead. :P) Oh, well. I need to finish up my [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly entries anyway. It doesn't look like I'll make my goal of five before the contest deadline -- unless I continue to have problems with TBBYS -- but I'm almost finished with the third one I was writing when I got hit over the head with the TBBYS plot bunny, so that's good enough. If I finish that one today, I'll probably post them all sometime this weekend.

In other fic news, guess who randomly got a plot bunny for a Zoisite/Mercury fic last night? Yeah, that would be me -- surprisingly. O.o I mean, as a general rule, I'm not a huge fan of sen/gen. I do love me some Kunzite/Venus, and I like Jadeite/Mars well enough, but I don't think Nephrite/Jupiter go together at all and I was always kind of...ambivalent about Zoisite/Mercury. But, you know, they could be a rather interesting couple if Zoisite wasn't simply portrayed as a male version of Mercury (like he is in most of the, admittedly few, fics I've read about the couple) and acted truer to his anime persona -- only, you know, on the good side, and straight (or bisexual, which I'll probably end up going with If I ever decide to actually write this thing). True, that would make it more difficult for them to get together, since I can't see Mercury being intially attracted to somebody with such a personality, but that's what would make it fun to write! Opposites attract, and all that jazz.

You know, I better stop talking about this, or I'm really going to want to write it. *laughs* I need to finish TBBYS, after all, and Melting Ice is still in the wings, waitng for me to finally get back to it.

To wrap up this entry, how about an except from To Be By Your Side?

To Be By Your Side )

(Ugh, the RTE is being such a pain today! It wouldn't let me copy and paste this except, so I had to go digging around to find how to do a cut in HTML. I hope this isn't going to be a permanent thing, otherwise it's going to be a pain posting fics in my fic journal.)

EDIT: Hmm, looks like there's going to be another round of [livejournal.com profile] sm_fanswap coming up. I can't decide if I want to participate or not. It was fun participating last time, but I really should be working on my other WIPs, and I'm not sure I'm sold on the whole "quotes" thing that was added. I liked the relative freedom of the last one. Then again, maybe I'll get lucky and my recipient will be a Zoisite/Mercury fan and I can write my story idea without feeling (too) guilty about ignoring my other stories... Heh, that's probably a long-shot anyway. Well, I have time to think it over, so think it over, I shall do.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Yanked from [livejournal.com profile] nephthysmoon :

Under the cut is a list of my current writing projects. Ask a question about something. Ask anything about any idea listed here, and I shall attempt to answer it. I reserve the right to not give away Important Plot Points, but otherwise...have at it!

Well, I'm not going to cut since the list is so short, so here are my current WIPs.

Melting Ice (Kaleido Star)
To Be By Your Side (Sailor Moon)
Only Human (Sailor Moon) - Okay, I'm not technically working on it at the moment since I have to start it over again to fit my new vision for it, but this meme would have been totally lame with only two stories, so it gets listed.

Then there are some random Rei stories for [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly , but they are currently untiltled at the moment, so I can't really list them. Still, if you want to ask what they're about, go ahead.

Gah!

Why does this month have to be Rei month at [livejournal.com profile] sm_monthly ? The themes are giving me ideas -- and not short ones either. Last week I wrote an entry (which I'll be posting soon) that was over 2,000 words and could have easily been more if I hadn't stopped myself. And now I have a ton of ideas for the other themes, to the point that I'm feeling overwhelmed and can't even decide which one I want to do next! I'm even half-considering doing the whole month.

Why does Rei have to be so much fun for me to write? Well, more specifically, her family, since most of the ideas are extra scenes for Spirit of Fire.

I'm never going to finish Melting Ice, am I?

Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern. (Note: I’m completely disregarding the Dream Lovers series, which is the series of Chibi-Usa/Helios vignettes I wrote for sm_monthly. If I had, those vignettes themselves would have almost taken up the twenty-five spots. *laughs* I’m also only going with stories posted at FF.net, since that’s the easiest way to see which are the twenty-five most recent, even if I do have some more recent stuff posted else where.)

25 First Lines )

Well, the totally obvious pattern is that I apparently love starting stories with a piece of dialogue. The unapparent pattern, since the meme was only to post the first line and not the first paragraph, is that most of my first lines are also the complete first paragraphs. Seriously, pretty much half of these lines are first paragraphs. *laughs* What else is there? Well, it looks like three of them start with the words, “It was”. I suppose you could call that a small pattern. Oh, and most of them are in third person. Hmm, that’s really all I can see.

I was looking through some old files on my computer and came across the beginning of a Chibi-Usa/Helios story that I think I was writing for sm_monthly, but decided not to use for some reason.

This is what I had saved:

The Original )

It actually wasn't that bad, but I've long forgotten what the story was actually supposed to be about, so I decided to turn it into a 100 word drabble.

Here's the result:

The Drabble )

You know, this drabble thing is kind of fun. ^_^ I may put up a post later on, taking requests. Must ponder this.

I had a strange dream today while I was taking my usual afternoon nap.

In it, I was wearing Dejana's Princess Pluto cosplay outfit.

But that wasn't the weirdest thing about it. I wasn't at an anime convention, where at least it might have made a modicum of sense for me to be dressed like that.

No, I was in Wal-Mart of all places, whacking random people on the head with the Time Staff.

Uh...yeah. Crazy.

By the way, I posted a couple more [profile] sm_monthlyentries over at [profile] oyster_shell if anybody is interested.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
For those fans of Spirit of Fire who may be interested, I actually wrote a "missing scene" for a [profile] sm_monthlyentry, taking place shortly after Ch. 6, when Keitaro is unable to take Rei out to eat for her seventh birthday because of the Assembly meeting. You can find it here at my writing journal. Enjoy! ^_^
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Possibly. ^^

I don't want to jinx it, but thanks to a rewatch of the second season of Kaleido Star, I'm back to work on the KS multipart I've been writing on and off for about the past year. So far, so good on the writing front. Today was a bit iffy, since I finished the season on Saturday, but I still managed a page and a half on a part that's been giving me trouble. Maybe I'll just have to keep watching it over and over again to keep the inspiration flowing. *laughs* Man, I hope not! (Granted, I can think of worst things than watching Kaleido Star on permanent repeat, but I do like a little variety in my anime viewing. Don't want to burn out on my all-time favorite anime.)

Anyway, I'm feeling positive that I'll finally be able to concentrate on a long multi-part again. The theme for the .moon Summer Challenge doesn't interest me, so I don't have to worry about being distracted by that, and I still can't think of an ending for the Shigure/Mayuko fic I'm writing for [profile] 15pairings. That means I should be able to devote myself full time to the story, as long as I can fight the temptation to write some entries for [profile] sm_monthly. (This month's theme is Pre-Series, which I'm a big fan of.) *crosses fingers* Let's hope so. I really, really want to feel good about my writing again. It's been way too long, and I need something to bring me out of this funk I've been for pretty much this entire year so far.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I really want to write something for today's [profile] sm_monthlytheme (Helios, yay!), but my mind is drawing a complete blank. I mean, I guess I could write one of his later scenes in Only Human, but I think I've already submitted most of the meatier scenes I've had planned in previous months. Besides, I would prefer to do a stand-alone story this time, something closer to canon. (OH is an alternate reality in which Chibi-Usa never time travels.) Oh, well, it doesn't have to be done today. I'm sure I'll think of something this weekend.

On the plus side, I am almost finished with my entry for the .moon Spring Challenge, and, unlike last time, I actually really like how this one is turning out.

In other news, yesterday, I got in the xxxHolic volumes I mentioned I ordered in my last entry. (Most of Emma is backordered, so it'll be a while until I get those.) I'm a little disappointed because in all my other volumes (other than the Omnibus Edition), they came with a full-color mini-poster you could tear out, but these two didn't have them for some reason. :( It's not that big a deal, since I haven't been taking out the posters anyway -- nowhere to hang them -- but I do like looking at them. The color scheme CLAMP uses for them is gorgeous.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
The winner of the .moon Winter Challenge was announced today, and somehow my HP story Birthday Fool (linking to the thread - it's an April Fool's story, so I'm waiting until then to post it at the usual places) actually won. O.o

I'm a bit in shock, because the story I entered is definitely my least favorite of all the challenge entries I've written for the seasonal contest. The only reason I really entered it is because I spent so much time working on it, I thought it would be a waste not to go ahead and submit it. I never actually believed it had a chance of winning, but I guess it helped that there were only four entries this time. Still think December's story should have won instead, though; it was adorable.

Speaking of fanfiction, I'm currently taking a bit of a break from my Kaleido Star multi-part. For the past couple of weeks, I've actually been working on my first Princess Tutu fic (working title: Searching for the Missing Past). It's been going fairly well so far, but I'm having some trouble with the last part of the story, so yesterday I went back to a story that I've had on hiatus for quite a while: Only Human. Yep, my oft-mentioned, oft-ignored Helios/Serenity/Perle Thorn Birds-inspired love triangle fic. ^_^

And this time, I'm really determined to finish it. I always said I wanted to write at least one really good Helios/Chibi-Usa romance, so that's what I'm going to try to do, since this will most likely be my last major SM work. (I'll still write the occasional story for [profile] sm_monthly, and there's still the possibility for the SM/WHR crossover I really want to write, so I'm not completely retiring from the SM fandom yet!) As I've mentioned before, I've decided to cut it down from the long multi-part I first invisioned it as to a long one-shot (possibly a short multi-part, depending on how things go) using some of the entries I wrote for [profile] sm_monthly(rewritten to better fit the story). I really think that'll make things a little easier to write, so wish me luck this time! *crosses fingers*
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

The  August awards for

[profile] sm_monthly were posted today, and somehow I managed to win eight categories. O.o Talk about a shocker! And I think all eight stories I wrote for the month were nominated at least once. Heh, I guess I really am pretty good when it comes to writing about family relationships

Anyway, the awards:

Best General: Queen of Hollywood
Best Romance: Ruining the Mood
Best Comedy: Ruining the Mood
Best Adult: Ruining the Mood
Best Characterization: Father/Daughter Bonding
Best Dialogue: Stuck Zippers and Cold Feet
Most Original: Taken by Surprise
Best Overall: Queen of Hollywood

I'm highly amused that Ruining the Mood won Best Adult, since I don't really consider it an adult story. *laughs* I mean, sure, it's about Usagi's and Mamoru's night being ruined when they overhear her parents doing the deed next door, but it's much more suggestive than it is actually explicit. In fact, I'm not even sure it really earning the R rating I gave it just to be on the safe side. Oh, well. I'll take it. ^_^ I'm not complaining.

Eight. Wow.

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Waldenbooks was having an awesome "buy four manga, get the fifth one free" sale, so I bought the four volumes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles I needed to finally get up to date, and got the last volume of Ultramaniac for free! It meant dipping into my saving wallet, but, oh, well. I couldn't resist. ^_^ Besides, with those five, I am now up-to-date on all my manga except for needing the second half of Magic Knight Rayearth.

Yay!

In other news, I can't decide if I want to sign up for the character claim at [profile] sm_monthly for October. Being able to claim whatever character you want to be the month's theme is fun, but I really should be focusing on some of my other projects, which I've sorely been neglecting as of late. Plus, I'll feel bad if I get assigned a character somebody else really wanted, then end up not writing anything for him/her. *sigh* Decisions, decisions...
