First off, Politically Incorrect is posted at dotmoon and FF.net. (I'll post it AO3 either later today or tomorrow; I didn't have time yesterday.). Decided just to post the whole thing as a long one-shot, since it really wasn't set up to be a chaptered story. If you read it before, I made a few really minor changes, but also added a One Year Later scene at the end that you may want to check out.

The reason why I didn't have time to post it at AO3 is because yesterday Mom and I went to the movies -- we saw Hope Springs, which was pretty good -- then did a little shopping. Of course, that meant manga for me! At Barnes & Noble, I picked up Sailor Moon Vol. 7, Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden Vol. 10 (finally, a new volume!), and the first 3-in-1 omnbus edition of Skip-Beat, which I've always wanted to read but thought was too long. Actually, I still think it's too long, but you know me, I'm always a sucker for an omnibus... *laughs* We also went to Half-Price Books. For once, though, they didn't have anything I was interested in, so I decided to satisfy my craving for bargain-hunting out-of-print manga on the Amazon Marketplace. I ordered Vols. 4 & 7 of Othello, Vol. 6 of Doubt! (all three missing volumes from series I bought previously at HPB), and Clannad: After Story Collection 2. (You may remember that I got the rest of the series for ridiculously cheap during Right Stuf's holiday sale last year.) Also bought some newer manga: Arata: The Legend Vol. 9, Kimi ni Todoke Vols. 8 and 9, and Kobato. Vols. 2-4.

So, yeah, I'm going to be in manga heaven for the next couple of weeks. ^_^

I'm getting really bad about doing my meme questions, so today will be another two-for-one. They're related anyway.

19. A manga/an anime that you disliked at first but came to enjoy later on

Hmm, this is a tough question. I guess I would have to say the manga series Phantom Dream did get a lot better later in the series. I didn't really care for it at all in the beginning. As for anime.... Maybe Gundam Wing? It was a bit of a struggle to get through the first half, but past the recap, I enjoyed it more, although I never really came to love it. It's a pretty average series.

20. A manga/an anime you started out enjoying but ended up not liking as much

Ah, this question is much easier to answer! I've already mentioned Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic in reply to a similar question from this meme, but for anime, it's gotta be Kare Kano. It was so, so good until the last couple of episodes! Unfortunately, the ending is so terrible that it's tainted the rest of the series for me.

Gah, I really did mean to update late last week, but I kept forgetting. Oh, well. For those who are interested, Chapters 6 and 7 of No Longer Alone have been posted at the usual places, completing the story. I'm planning to post it over at [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

Now, onto today's meme questions. Yes, plural. These next two questions aren't very interesting IMO, so I'm going to post both at once.

17. A manga/an anime that you feel embarrassed about liking

None. Maybe some I'm embarrassed about watching/reading, but not liking.

18. Favorite BL/yuri couple

Not really my thing, but if I had to choose... Kurogane/Fai from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Haruka/Michiru from Sailor Moon, I guess.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

12. A manga/an anime you used to love but don't anymore

You know, I can't really think of any. My affection tends to remain pretty steadfast. If I love something, I'll likely always love it. Maybe not as much, but not enough to say I don't love it anymore.

Maybe you could count Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic? They were never my favorites, but I liked them quite a bit until certain spoilers (Acid Tokyo for TRC and the exit of my two favorite characters from xxxHolic). After those points, I didn't like them as much. I still like both series overall, though.

Getting a little behind on this thing...

06. Your favorite character

Helios from Sailor Moon, obviously. Did anybody expect me to say otherwise? :P But that's kind of a boring answer to this question, so how about naming my top five male (excluding Helios) and female characters from anime and manga? (In no particular order)

Male Characters
Shigure (Fruits Basket)
Yasu (NANA)
Touya (Card Captor Sakura)
Harima (School Rumble)
Matsuda (Death Note)

Female Characters
Sora (Kaleido Star)
Ran (Super GALS)
Shurei (Story of Saiunkoku)
Yuko (xxxHolic/Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle)
Balsa (Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit)

Another late review. I'm getting bad about this. -_- To be fair, I wrote this one several weeks ago, but I wanted to wait until I had the chance to read the last volume and see if any of my opinions changed before posting this.

Now, onto the pimping. A new battle has just begun at [livejournal.com profile] sailormoonland , which means it's a great time for new members to join!

In other news, I ordered some things during Right Stuf's recent sale on in stock items. Not all I got was actually in stock, but still a good haul: Azumanga Daioh omnibus, Clover omnibus, Ristorante Paradiso (one-shot), Vol. 5 of Phantom Dream (last colume), Vol. 15 of xxxHolic, Vol. 25 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Familiar of Zero boxset, Kanon boxset, and, of course, another keychain for my collection: Simon from Gurren Lagann.

An Update

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

It's been over a week since I updated this journal, so, lessee, what to report...

On the writing front, I'm on the second-to-last scene for To Be By Your Side. I probably would have finished it had my dad not been on vacation this week, thus sucking out all of my creative energy. I just can't concentrate when my parents are home during my writing time. *sigh* I'm still hoping to be finished with the (very) rough draft by Halloween, though. Two scenes, one that will probably be fairly short? That should be doable. As for Nanowrimo... It looks like I'm going to stick with last year's idea. There's just not enough time to come up with something new. (I probably should have done that instead of playing Sims and cleaning my room while Dad was home, in hindsight. Oh, well.)

Still haven't made a concrete decision on what my 100th anime series will be, although I'm leaning toward either Gurren Lagann or Code Geass. Those two seemed to be the most mentioned between my LJ post and the dotmoon post. I really need to make a decision soon. It seems I actually miscounted, so the next series I start will be the 100th, and I only have the last two discs of Red Garden left before I get there. I finished up Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo today, and now I kinda wish I had taken advantage of the deal at Right Stuf when I was ordering last. :( Fortunately, it looks like they got a new shipment of the boxset in, so I can still take get it. Now I just need some money. -_- Maybe for my birthday next month?

Speaking of Right Stuf, the previously mentioned order came in today. Among the goodies: Chance Pop Session boxset (which was another fantastic deal at only eighteen dollars), both halves of Ghost Hunt (yet another good deal at fifteen each, and perfect watching for Halloween), Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu! Disc 3 to replace the messed up disc from my boxset ($5, totally worth it for the hot springs episode alone), the second season of Emma, Vol. 9 & 10 (pre-order) of the Emma manga, and, of course, my usual keychain purchase (Sakura from TRC, which is currently backordered.) Not a bad haul for just over a hundred dollars, but I really need to take a break from that site until after the holidays or I won't have any money left to buy Christmas presents! *laughs*

Will totally ignore that last sentence should I get money for birthday

Yay!

Manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga, manga!

Hehe, sorry. >.< Don't mind me, I'm in manga heaven at the moment. We finally got a chance to go to the bookstore today, and I totally loaded up!

The loot?

Fruits Basket 23
NANA 15-17
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles 21-22
Tsubasa: Those With Wings 2
Short-Tempered Melancholic (short story anthology from the mangaka of Full Moon wo Sagashite)

And I was very tempted by the new omnibus edition of CLAMP's Clover, but it's one of their abandoned series, so I can't decide if I really want it or not. :( Besides, I had already spent more than I intended since I didn't originally plan to get Short-Tempered Melancholic, and I wasn't expecting the new Tsubasa: Those With Wings to be out until Tuesday. Oh, well.

Now that Fruits Basket is over, though, I have to decide which series I'll start collecting next. Hmm... I'm almost definitely going to get Death Note, but I have my eye on the manga boxset at Right Stuf and am just waiting for a sale on it before ordering it. I'm not sure what I'll start buying individually, though. There are quite a few contenders: Skip Beat!, Ouran High School Host Club, La Corda d'Oro, Nodame Cantabile, Sand Chronicles, V.B. Rose... I'm sure there are a few more titles I'm forgetting. *sigh* Such a tough decision; I want them all! *laughs*
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Guys, I just went a little nuts at Amazon. >.< As if I'm not addicted enough to Sims 2, I decided I simply must have the rest of the Stuff Packs I needed to complete my set, like, yesterday, so I bought a $100 Visa giftcard at Wal-mart and ordered all four of them at once (Happy Holidays Stuff, Family Fun Stuff, Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff, and Glamour Life Stuff). *laughs* Now all I need is the Apartment Life expansion pack, but I'm not in any real rush to get that one since it's the newest and easy to find in stores. (I actually had to buy two of the Stuff packs from the Marketplace, since Amazon wasn't selling them anymore.) I also pre-ordered the first volume of Tsubasa: Those With Wings (from the mangaka of Fruits Basket) and picked up Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Vol. 20, along with a paperback copy of Anna Karenina, which I've wanted to read ever since my sophomore year in high school, when I stupidly chose to read Wuthering Heights instead for Pre-AP English. (I needed something under seven dollars to max out the card, so I figured it was as good as time as ever to get around to it!)

Only bad thing about online shopping? The wait.

I want my Sims stuff now!

*pouts*
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

You know, I normally consider myself a very patient person, but it's been almost a month since I ordered the last volumes of Absolute Boyfriend and Yurara from Right Stuf, and I still haven't gotten them. :( According to my Order Status page, Absolute Boyfriend has been "Reserved for your order" for a couple of weeks now, but Yurara is still backordered. Gah! Can't they at least send me the Absolute Boyfriend volume so I'll finally have something new to read? It seems like forever since I've read a new manga volume! (Looking back, I think my last manga splurge was all the way back in April. Oh, my, two whole months without new manga!)

Yeah, I know, I shouldn't be complaining. I ordered them with my Trigun DVDs, so I got free shipping, and I know they're just trying to cut back on their shipping costs by mailing the order in as few packages as possible, but I can't help it! I feel like a heroin junkie looking for her next fix. *laughs*

Well, hopefully the order I placed yesterday will be in soon. Right Stuf was having a sale on in-stock items, so most of what I ordered was, of course, in-stock: Vash and Wolfwood keychains (so cute!), NANA 10, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles 17, and Full Moon wo Sagashite 3, 5-7. Only Vol. 4 of Full Moon and Vol. 12 of xxxHolic are backordered, and I'm crossing my fingers that they either get in soon or don't hold up the rest of my order.

I NEED NEW MANGA!!!!!!

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Two days after Thanksgiving, and I'm already finished with all of my Christmas shopping. Go me! I bought a nice shirt for my dad, a porcelain figurine for my mom that she's had her eye on for months, the Season 4 (and Season 2 for her birthday, which is also next month) Simpsons boxset for my sister, a cute coin purse with a frog on it and a small jewelry box for my best friend Crystle, this really cool-looking Spider-man web shooter thing for her older son Hunter, and a toy phone and car key set for her younger son Ethan. I think everybody will like their presents. ^_^

Plus, since Right Stuf is having a 30% off almost everything sale at the moment, I bought a few things for myself, since it doesn't look like there will be a lot of money for presents this year, what with the hospital bills and Mom being on leave and all. I ordered Vol. 15 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, the first boxset of Fullmetal Alchemist, and all three Paradise Kiss DVDs. To be honest, even with the 30% off, the ParaKiss DVDs were still more than I would have liked to have paid -- about $20 each -- but since it is a Geneon title, I figured I should go ahead and snap it up while I still had the chance.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Waldenbooks was having an awesome "buy four manga, get the fifth one free" sale, so I bought the four volumes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles I needed to finally get up to date, and got the last volume of Ultramaniac for free! It meant dipping into my saving wallet, but, oh, well. I couldn't resist. ^_^ Besides, with those five, I am now up-to-date on all my manga except for needing the second half of Magic Knight Rayearth.

Yay!

In other news, I can't decide if I want to sign up for the character claim at [profile] sm_monthly for October. Being able to claim whatever character you want to be the month's theme is fun, but I really should be focusing on some of my other projects, which I've sorely been neglecting as of late. Plus, I'll feel bad if I get assigned a character somebody else really wanted, then end up not writing anything for him/her. *sigh* Decisions, decisions...

Wow!

Nothing makes me happier than a really great sale. ^_^

Recently, my mom got a J.C. Penney's credit card in the mail, so, today, we decided to go to the mall to "try it out," as my mom kept saying. As it turned out, we picked a really good day to go because they were having some really fantastic sales and markdowns. Can you believe I managed to find a ninety dollar pantsuit for only ten dollars? O.o Crazy, isn't it? I have to admit that it's not something I would normally buy for myself, although it is quite cute, but I just couldn't pass up such a great bargain.

I mean, it was a ninety dollar pantsuit for ten dollars, for crying out loud!

*laughs*

And that's not all I got! In addittion to the pantsuit, I got:

- A purple skirt (Orig. $40, marked down to $19.99)
- A graphic-patterned blouse (Orig. $40, marked down to $19.99)
- Platinum-plated amethyst and diamond earrings (Orig. $60, marked down to $19.99)
- 18KT gold-plated sapphire and diamond earrings (Orig. $60, marked down to $19.99)

All together, I calculated I got $290 worth of clothes and jewelry for somewhere around $90! And that's not even including the 15% we got off our entire purchase because it was the first time Mom used the card. Together with Mom's things -- she also got a great deal on a $80 dress, marked down to ten, plus some other sale items -- we saved well over $300!

Amazing, huh? ^_^

I also picked up Vol. 4 of Ultramaniac and Vol. 10 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles from Waldenbooks while we were there, of course.

My one letdown today was due to a ditzy moment from me. >.< Just when we were about to leave to go to the mall, I looked up at our calender and noticed that today was the fourth. I remember thinking there was something really off about that, but I was just too excited to care because I thought I would be able to buy the Kaleido Star Season 2 boxset that's coming out on Sept. 4th. Well, as you all know, today is actually the first. I was looking at August since we hadn't switched over to Septenber yet! *laughs* Oh, well, Mom says she'll take me to next weekend to buy it, so I suppose I can wait that long to get it.

As Sora might say, "Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!"
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Okay, so my sister got this coupon in the mail for one of her favorite clothing stores. I think it was something like get 30% off when you spent a hundred dollars or more. It was definitely a good deal, but either because there wasn't a store near her or her local store didn't have anything she wanted, today Laura decided to drive all the way to Humble to go to the store at Dearbrook Mall. *rolls eyes* Considering the price of gas, it probably wasn't even worth the trip, but, nonetheless, since she was planning to drop by here for a short visit after shopping, Mom and I decided we would just meet her there at the mall and save her at least a little gas money.

We just got back a little while ago, and, of course, me being me, I had to buy some manga. Spent more than I wanted, actually, considering I'm trying to save up money for the Season 2 Kaleido Star boxset. (Bad Yume! >.<)I originally only planned to buy Vol. 10 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, but they were out of stock, so I decided to go ahead and buy two volumes of the Ultramaniac manga instead. I finished watching the anime last weekend and fell in love with it, but since the boxset is over a hundred dollars, I figured that getting the five volume manga was a better investment.`Then, just as we were leaving, Mom pointed out an Omnibus Edition of the Magic Knight Rayearth manga that I failed to notice the first time I went through the store. I have to admit, the MKR manga wasn't something I particularly wanted; I already own the anime, and while I liked the first couple of chapters I read a long time ago in Mixxzine, it wasn't something I was really interested in reading. However, just like with Tsubasa, the Omnibus Edition, containing the first three volumes for under $10, was just too good a deal to pass up, so I ended up buying that as well.

So, yeah. I just started collecting two more series, on top of the six others I've already been buying! >.< Luckily, I'm almost finished with Absolute Boyfriend, and both MKR and Ultramaniac are short series that are already completely translated, but still...

I have a sickness. I really do. *laughs*
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I am extremely proud of myself right now.

My mom had the day off today, so we decided to go see License to Wed (which is absolutely hilarious, by the way). While we were waiting for the movie to start, we went to Waldenbooks so I could buy the missing volume 5 of NANA I needed to get up-to-date. Well, it just so happened that the store was having an awesome sale where if you bought three Viz titles, you could get a fourth one free. NANA was one of the included titles, but I'm up-to-date on all of the other Viz (mostly Shojo Beat) titles I'm currently collecting, so if I wanted to take advantage of the sale, it meant I would have to buy three volumes of a new series.

I was tempted. Boy, was I ever tempted. I must have spent at least twenty or thirty minutes browsing the manga section, going, "Oh, Skip-Beat looks kinda interesting... Ooo, La Corda D'oro! I've been wanting to read that... What about Full Moon? All seven volumes are out and in stock, so if I bought all of them, plus the NANA volume, I could buy six and get two free!"...etc., etc. You get the picture. *laughs* However, in the end, I decided I really did not need to start collecting another series right now (and buying all of Full Moon would have meant breaking into my savings wallet), so I just bought the NANA volume I needed and Vol. 7 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.

*pats self on the back*

In somewhat related news, for the life of me, I cannot understand why Vol. 5 and 6 of NANA were shrink-wrapped and slapped with a mature content label when those two volumes are actually tamer than some of the earlier volumes. There was sex, sure, but nothing detailed. I've seen more explicit stuff in the earlier volumes and in Watase Yuu manga. The only reason I can think of to justify it is the fact that one of the characters makes references to the fact that he has sex for money. Is prostitution really considered "mature content" now? *scratches head* I can think of plenty of other things I've seen in manga that I would consider more "mature" than that, yet they didn't get the label. It's strange. Oh, well.

(And I hate, hate, hate getting that shrink-wrap off!)

EDIT: I just checked out AnimeOnDVD and found out that the second season boxset of Kaleido Star is coming out September 4! *dances around happily* YES, YES, YES, YES, YES! Finally, I'll be able to buy it! This is great! Unfortunately, the suggested retail price is a bit higher than I would like to pay ($60), but I'm sure I can probably find it cheaper at Right Stuf or Best Buy. Even sixty would be worth it, though, to be able to watch all of my favorite anime again.

*resolves to save money until then*
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Seriously, this sudden manga bug I've been bitten by needs to stop. In just the past couple of weeks, I think I've spent about $150 just on manga, which is so not like me. I'm a notorious tightwad, but...manga!

*glomps stack of new manga*

But, yeah, I bought some more manga today: Vol. 4 and 5 of Tsubasa and the first two volumes of NANA. -_-; I probably would have bought more of NANA, actually, but Waldenbooks didn't have the third volume in stock, so I decided to stick with just the first two for now. (Probably for the best.) At least I managed to stop myself from picking up the first three volumes of Card Captor Sakura they had, although they were very tempting. I already have enough series to finish collecting: NANA, Tsubasa, Fruits Basket, Absolute Boyfriend, and Someday's Dreamers: Spellbound.

Gah!

*hides $50 B&N gift card so I'm not tempted to order more*

In other news, Mom totally ruined her Mother's Day present. I bought said gift card so that I could order the Indiana Jones boxset she's been wanting online as a surprise, but the moment she saw it, she knew exactly what I was going to buy with it. *sigh* Since she already knew what I wanted to buy, I ended up just buying the set from Best Buy, which is why I still have the gift card.

Man, it's tempting me...

No! No more manga for at least a month, Yume!

Eh, it'll probably be gone by the end of next weekend.

I'm too weak.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Man, I am exhausted.

This morning, Crystle called me the minute I woke up to ask if I wanted to go to the mall with her, since our plans for yesterday got canceled. I never pass up a chance to go to the mall, so of course I said yes.

Well, normally when I go to the mall, I tend to stick around Barnes & Noble and Lane Bryant, occasionally going upstairs to check out FYE and the comic book store, so I wasn't used to checking out the whole mall. (Really wish I had thought to wear more comfortable shoes. :( My feet are killing me.) It was actually a good thing that Crystle dragged us (Hunter and Ethan were with us, too) all around the mall though, because she convinced me to try on some things at New York & Company that I never thought would fit me, and they actually did! I bought myself a boatneck pink shirt and a gorgeous black, white, and silver floral-print blouse for about the same price as a shirt I was considering buying from Lane Bryant. Whoo!

Since I also seem to be in a manga phase at the moment -- Paradise Kiss and my missing volume of Aishiteruze Baby came in yesterday from RightStuf -- I decided to pick up the omnibus edition of Tsubasa Resevoir as well, which was a really fantastic deal: the first three volumes for just a couple of dollars more than the individual volumes. From what I saw flipping through the book, the artwork wasn't really my type, but, hey, the price was right, so I figured why not check it out. Besides, it'll be interesting to see Sakura and Shaoran in a completely different story.

Definitely a fun day. ^_^
