It was a good season, although I'm disappointed that Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku didn't end up on Crunchyroll. I guess I can just get the manga that just came out in English anyway.

As for the rest:
Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card - Loved it! Yeah, most of the episodes were filler and the ending wasn't very conclusive, but I'm like 95% certain that we'll get another season when the manga is closer to actually ending, so it didn't bother me that much. I just enjoyed seeing all these wonderful characters again!
My Hero Academia (continuing) - Seriously keeps getting better and better!
Major 2nd (continuing) - There were actually two baseball anime this season, and of the two, this one seemed more suited to my taste, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did because I totally loved it. There's something almost nostalgic about it, even though it's set in the modern day. Maybe because it's a sequel to an older manga series, Major? But absolutely no knowledge is needed to enjoy 2nd, since it's focused on the kids of the main characters of the original series.
Comic Girls - Yet another "cute girls doing cute things" type of show, but it really was cute! A little more fanservice-y than these shows tend to be, but it didn't bother me. Still really funny and, well, cute!
Idolish7 - Just a few episodes carried into this season (although there was a small break in between), but, yep, definitely the best idol show I've seen. I'm happy to hear the news that there's going to be another season!
Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory - I was really looking forward to this, and it was pretty good, but it definitely didn't need a recap episode every fifth episode. It was also a bit disappointing that most of the season focused on new (though pretty interesting) characters instead of my old favorites. It ended at a weird point as well (probably because of the recaps), so fingers crossed we'll get more at a later date. I want to see the end!
Cute High Earth Defense Club HAPPY KISS! - This sequel series introduced a new group since the old group graduated in the OAV. I liked the new characters okay, but the original group had more chemistry and more distinct personalities. Still, a pretty fun show!
Darling in the FRANXX - Eh. It started off pretty well last season, but definitely lost steam along the way. Didn't help that there were a couple of episodes that consisted of the seiyuu just talking about the show instead of an actual episode. I believe one of the seiyuu was diagnosed with a serious illness during taping which might explain why that happened, but the show had bigger problems than that...namely that the whole backstory just didn't make much sense and the leads lost pretty much all their personality when they became an official couple.
As for the summer season, there are slim pickings when it comes to new shows. I'll be watching the continuations of My Hero Academia and Major 2nd and the new seasons of Free! and Attack on Titan, but the only new series that has caught my eye is Holmes of Kyoto. Oh, well, I guess it'll give me a chance to watch some of my backlog, which is nice.

I actually haven't finished this season yet, but I've watched enough to say that I really liked everything I watched...with one notable exception.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card - This was my most-anticipated show this season, and it absolutely lived up to the hype for me! Love, love, love it! The animation may be a little slicker and the guys may no longer have those ridiculously broad shoulders that were so popular in the 90s, but otherwise it doesn't feel like any real time has passed between this sequel and the original series. They even got most (maybe all?) of the original cast back and reused a lot of the same background music from the first series. My only real complaints so far are that the actual cardcapturing hasn't been very exciting and I have no idea if the second movie is supposed to be canon or not. (The show itself can't even seem to make up it's mind!) Those are pretty minor things, though.
School Babysitters - Oh, my, word, this series was seriously the CUTEST! I could have lived without the older brother who hits his little brother, slap-stick-style, and the kinda-creepy teenage boy who gets nosebleeds because he thinks babies and toddlers are just so cute, but if you ignore those two problematic things, this show is just full of the WAFF-y goodness.
IDOLiSH7 - I've watched a few idol shows over the past couple of years. They were usually pretty good, but nothing memorable. This show, however, I could actually see myself buying to rewatch if it continues to be this good. It's genuinely funny and touching, the music is great, and the guys' personalities are developed enough that I can actually remember their names (most of the time)!
The Ancient Magus' Bride - I don't think this second half was quite as strong as the first half, but I still really liked it...with the caveat that I have yet to watch the final episode. I've heard that a lot of people feel like the ending was rushed since the anime caught up with the manga and they had to do an anime-original ending. Unless it's, like, Kare Kano bad, though, I don't think it'll ruin how I feel about the rest of the series, which was great.
March comes in like a lion - March's pacing has always been a little disjointed, but I think the fact that the show went on break for a couple of weeks while the Olympics were airing made it feel more disjointed than usual. Still good, though.
DARLING in the FRANXX - This was not on my original to-watch list, but it sounded kinda interesting when I checked out ANN's Preview Guide, especially since mecha series aren't very popular nowadays. It's pretty good so far, but I don't see it becoming, like, Evangelion/Rah-Xephon/Full Metal Panic-good. We'll see.
Maerchen Maedchen - This series... Well, I'm not sure what really happened. The production was apparently very troubled, leading them to take two weeks off to improve the quality of episode 9. That meant they had to end with episode 10, even though it was meant to be a twelve-episode series. I haven't actually watched those two episodes yet, but just knowing what happened, that can't be good. It wasn't even that great in the first place, despite having quite an interesting premise (magical girls based on fairy/folk tales). What a shame.

As for next season, I have sooooo much I want to watch, I'm not sure I can fit everything in my schedule! I'll definitely be watching the continuations of CCS: Clear Card, IDOLiSH7, and FRANXX, as well as new seasons of My Hero Academia and Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory (*squee* finally more FMP!). Brand new shows I might check out if available for free streaming are: Tada Never Falls in Love, Comic Girls, Devils' Line, Piano no Mori and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku. I want to watch Lupin the Third: Part 5 and Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online, but I think I may wait and see if they're picked up by Toonami first since Toonami aired previous seasons of those shows. I'm on the fence on Steins;Gate Zero... I liked the original series well enough, I guess, but I'm not in any rush to watch more. I'll probably save it to watch at a later date.
One series I WON'T be watching, despite my usual compulsion to complete a series, is Tokyo Ghoul:re. I forced myself to watch the first two seasons that aired on Toonami and hated almost every minute of it, so, nope, not going to torture myself any longer. Gonna cut my losses and stay far, far away!

Now that the summer anime season is over (for the most part; The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan has a weird amount of episodes and will cross over into next season, although it's still the same cour), I'll give my thoughts on the shows I watched.
Continuing series

Sailor Moon Crystal - Love, love, love the second half of the series! A definite improvement on the somewhat mishandled first half, which was helped by not making any huge changes to the manga plotline. I still think the new musical version of this arc is my favorite, but a lot better than the old anime, with the nonsensical and badly-handled break-up and stupid attempts at a MotD plot when that kind of plotline doesn't really work with the arc. Just one more episode left! (Got my fingers crossed that a new season will be officially announced soon. I need the Dream arc animated!)

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works - I wish they hadn't taken a break between the first and second halves of this show. I absolutely loved the first half, but by the time the second half started airing, I had forgotten a lot of what happened, so there were some definite moments of confusion on my part. (I get the feeling that it would have been helpful to be more familiar with the original VN during this part as well.) For the first time, I understand why sometimes there's a need for recap episodes. I would have benefitted from one at the start of this season! I was also disappointed by some of the things that happened to Rin and Saber and how they reacted to those things, which seemed out of character to me. I still enjoyed the show, though, and think it's one of the most gorgeously animated shows I've ever seen.

I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying - More of the same, really. Nothing much else to say, although I actually really liked the final episode. That was my favorite of the entire series.

New Series

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO! - Technically a continuing series, but since I watched both seasons back to back, I'm counting it as a new one. Anyway, I LOVED the first season and thought it was hilarious, but the second season isn't quite as good, IMO. I mean, I still really liked it and all, but for most of this season the relationship between Hachimon, Yui, and Yukino was kind of strained, which put a damper on a lot of the humor I enjoyed from the first. Plus, the "cases" they work on aren't as fun and were way drawn out. Seriously, how many episodes did they spend on planning the Christmas event with those annoying people from the other school who just liked to talk and wouldn't make any actual decisions about anything? I just looked it up -- five. freakin'. episodes. Three episodes too many, if you ask me. One episode to establish how annoying those people were and one episode for somebody to stand up and tell them to start taking things seriously...that's all that was needed. (Okay, so Hachimon and the others learned a lot of good lessons during this arc, too, but still...five. freakin'. episodes.)

My love STORY!! - If I had to sum up this series in one word, it would be...ADORABLE! Seriously, it is impossible to watch an episode of this show and not end up grinning like an idiot by the end. It's just so sweet and fluffy and heartwarming and...well, adorable! I do wish that Yamato (the main female character) was a more developed character -- you can basically describe her in three phrases: really nice, likes to bake, and finds Takeo very, very sexy -- but other than that, I have no real complaints. (And since the show is continuing into next season with a second cour, maybe Yamato will get more development later on.) My favorite of the season!

Sound! Euphonium - This show makes me wish my sister and her husband were anime fans, because I think they would really like it, too. (They're both junior high/high school band directors.) I'm no band geek -- I was a choir nerd instead -- but the music talk comes across as being mostly realistic, and the characters look like they're actually playing the instruments correctly. Being a Kyoto Animation show, there's no real need to point out that the animation is gorgeous, but...well, the animation is GORGEOUS. I also quite enjoyed the characters. It ended in a great spot, but I definitely wouldn't mind if we got a second season of this!

The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato - This is an AU version of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, based on the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. I liked the original MoHS well enough, but I think I actually like this version more. Granted, the plotlines are nothing special -- the first few episodes are just your typical Christmas/Valentine cliche fests -- but the characters are more likeable, especially Haruhi Suzumiya herself, who loses her more...sociopathic qualities (like molesting poor Mikuru all the time, although she does do some boob-groping during the hot springs episodes) while still remaining mostly true to her original character. Plus, it's really fun to pick up the allusions made to the original series.

Amagi Brilliant Park - Technically, this was from a couple of seasons ago, but it never got picked up for legal simulcast for some reason. Crunchyroll finally got the rights this to it season, so I'm counting it as part of the summer season. Anyway, love, love, love this show! The humor was great, and again, Kyoto Animation, so it looked fantastic. Sure, it would have been nice to get a new season of Full Metal Panic (by the same author), but I loved ABP just as much as FMP, so I'm not complaining. (Okay, one complaint: When is CR going to get the rights to the 13th episode? From what I understand, it's not a necessary episode -- everything wrapped up nicely in Episode 12 -- but I still want to see it!)

So it was a pretty successful summer anime season! (And I haven't even watched the Heroic Age of Arslan yet. Never got around to it, but it's on my list.)

Not much has caught my eye next season, though. I definitely want to watch Snow White of the Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime), and Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers might be worth a shot, but that's about it aside from new seasons of series I've already watched before (Hetalia and To-LOVE-Ru). Oh, and I'm kinda interested in Gangsta., but I'm super on the fence. Might just wait until the end of the season and see what the general opinion is.

Right Stuf is having their annual fabulous holiday sale, and of course I'm finding tons of things I want to buy. One bargain particularly caught my eye today: all four boxsets of Yu Yu Hakusho on sale for $11.99 each. That would be just $47.96 for 112 episodes! ($59.95 if I also buy the movie/OVA set, which I'm not all that interested in at the moment.) Awesome deal, right? I have watched the first 28 episodes (the first boxset) through Netflix and liked what I saw, but I'm not sure if I like it enough to want to risk blind-buying the rest of the series, no matter how great the price is. If you have watched the entire series before, what did you think of it? Does it get better as the series goes along? Stay about the same? Go sharply downhill after a certain point? Is the ending complete as is, or one of those series where you have to read the manga to get the real ending? (That's probably a dealbreaker for me. If I'm going to buy and watch 112 episodes, it better have at least a decent ending.) Would you recommend it for me, based on what you know of my tastes? I'm not a huge shounen fan, but some shounen series I've really liked in the past are Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist (both series), Rah-Xephon, Evangelion, Trigun, Code Geass, Full Metal Panic, Slayers, Soul Eater, Blue Exorcist, and Rurouni Kenshin. (Speaking of Fullmetal Alchemist, I have to squeal over the deal I got on the manga boxset earlier this week: $110 for twenty-seven volumes of manga, plus an bonus light novel! Too bad it was only that price for a week. EDIT: It's no longer that price at Right Stuf, but it turns out that Barnes & Noble is also holding a 50% off select Viz manga boxsets sale where you can get the FMA boxset for the same price I paid. It only lasts until Wednesday, though, so if you want to take advantage, do it fast. That really is a ridiculously good price.)

The sale continues until Dec. 28th, so I do have plenty of time to think it over, but I would like some opinions to help me make up my mind. Thanks!

An Update

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

It's been over a week since I updated this journal, so, lessee, what to report...

On the writing front, I'm on the second-to-last scene for To Be By Your Side. I probably would have finished it had my dad not been on vacation this week, thus sucking out all of my creative energy. I just can't concentrate when my parents are home during my writing time. *sigh* I'm still hoping to be finished with the (very) rough draft by Halloween, though. Two scenes, one that will probably be fairly short? That should be doable. As for Nanowrimo... It looks like I'm going to stick with last year's idea. There's just not enough time to come up with something new. (I probably should have done that instead of playing Sims and cleaning my room while Dad was home, in hindsight. Oh, well.)

Still haven't made a concrete decision on what my 100th anime series will be, although I'm leaning toward either Gurren Lagann or Code Geass. Those two seemed to be the most mentioned between my LJ post and the dotmoon post. I really need to make a decision soon. It seems I actually miscounted, so the next series I start will be the 100th, and I only have the last two discs of Red Garden left before I get there. I finished up Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo today, and now I kinda wish I had taken advantage of the deal at Right Stuf when I was ordering last. :( Fortunately, it looks like they got a new shipment of the boxset in, so I can still take get it. Now I just need some money. -_- Maybe for my birthday next month?

Speaking of Right Stuf, the previously mentioned order came in today. Among the goodies: Chance Pop Session boxset (which was another fantastic deal at only eighteen dollars), both halves of Ghost Hunt (yet another good deal at fifteen each, and perfect watching for Halloween), Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu! Disc 3 to replace the messed up disc from my boxset ($5, totally worth it for the hot springs episode alone), the second season of Emma, Vol. 9 & 10 (pre-order) of the Emma manga, and, of course, my usual keychain purchase (Sakura from TRC, which is currently backordered.) Not a bad haul for just over a hundred dollars, but I really need to take a break from that site until after the holidays or I won't have any money left to buy Christmas presents! *laughs*

Will totally ignore that last sentence should I get money for birthday
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Last week, I was browsing Right Stuf's Bargain Bin and noticed they have an incredible deal on the Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo boxset. The original price was $150, and they're selling it for $27. O.o Since the show was on my "To Watch" list, I immediately moved the series to the top of my Netflix queue, hoping that even if I couldn't watch the entire show before they sold out, I could at least try to see enough to decide if it was worth buying.

Well, with such a great deal, of course the supply is running out fast. They only have thirteen left in stock, and I've only watched the first disc. (I'll be watching the second later today.) I like what I've seen so far, but I'm not sure if I like it enough yet to own it. Looks like I'm going to have to let this one go. *sigh* If I had more money, I wouldn't mind making a mostly-blind buy, but with Christmas coming up and lots of other series I want more, I can't really justify it.

Oh, well. Maybe they'll get another shipment in later, like they did Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu! Vol. 3, which I'll be picking up to replace the messed up disc in my boxset. (I doubt it, though, since it's a Geneon title.) If not, I think the singles are in the bin too, and I believe Funimation rescued the license, so there will be other opportunities if I decide I do want it after finishing it. But I still hate having to pass up such a great deal...
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

I'm so disappointed.

For the past week, I've been watching the Full Metal Panic Heavy Metal collection (first series and Fumoffu) I bought a couple of months ago and was really looking forward to watching Episode 9 (the hot springs episode) of Fumoffu, which is, in my opinion, if not the funniest anime episode ever produced, then at least in the top five. The problem? It seems I got a bad pressing on the last disc that renders the last seven minutes of that episode (along with about a minute or so of the next episode, but I don't really care about that one) completely unwatchable. It's a brand new disc, so there are no scratches or smudges or anything like that to explain why that part is messed up. I can only conclude it's a problem with the disc itself.

This totally sucks! A large reason why I bought the series was for that episode in particular. :( And though Right Stuf is selling the individual discs for five dollars (which I certainly wouldn't mind paying, as the discs come with extras that didn't come with the collection), of course they don't have the one disc I need. Gah!

I suppose I'll just have to hope that they someday get a new shipment. *crosses fingers* Until then, I guess it's off to Youtube. *sigh* At least I only need to stream the last third...

([livejournal.com profile] pisceswater , I'll get to your Top 5 suggestion next entry.)
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

I'm almost broke, but I definitely got my money's worth.

For those who don't know, select Best Buy stores are currently having a clearance sale on all their anime, 50% off. Unfortunately, the closest store to me was about fifty miles away, so I thought I wouldn't be able to take advantage of it.

Well, I talked to my mom about it, and she agreed to take me when I offered to buy her the Supernatural boxset she's been wanting and can't afford at the moment -- which she actually wouldn't let me buy her when we got there, since it was so expensive. (Isn't my mom nice?) I insisted on buying her something for her trouble, though, so I bought her a twenty dollar Outer Limits boxset instead, while I loaded up on anime.

The loot? Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, School Rumble: First Semester, and both parts of School Rumble: Second Semester.

All for a hundred dollars and some change. Can you believe it? O.o

The only thing that would have been better is if they had had the School Rumble OVA and the FMP/FMP Fumoffu boxset, but, oh, well. I'll just wait until Right Stuf has a good deal on those.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
So, thanks to [profile] lunaludusand [profile] mythopoet_blue's input -- thanks, guys! -- I decided that instead of getting the nine episode Fushigi Yugi OAV (which was a little too expensive for the $100 Visa gift card I used anyway), my money would be better spent on other things (namely manga).

I ordered:

Fullmetal Alchemist Boxset 3
Fullmetal Alchemist Boxset 4
Fruits Basket Vol. 19
Someday's Dreamers: Spellbound Vol. 5
Legend of Chun Hyang manga
The One I Love manga
Marriage DVD
Full Metal Panic Ani-Mini DVD

Yeah, I know I said I wouldn't start any new manga series until after I finished collecting Someday's Dreamers: Spellbound (which I'm finishing with this order), Absolute Boyfriend, and Yurara, but The One I Love and Legend of Chun Hyang are both one-shots, so I say that they don't really count. :P (Besides, they're CLAMP!) As for the last two, Marriage is a single-disc anime title that I've been eyeing for a while, since the summary sounded interesting and the price was right (only nine dollars, so even if it sucks, it's not big deal), while I mainly just got the ani-mini DVD because it was cheap ($.99) and I had a little over a dollar left on the card. *laughs*
