Did my usual look back at the fanfiction I wrote last year over on Tumblr!

2021 Fanfic Year In Review

2021 Fanfic End of the Year Asks

It's also time for the usual seasonal anime review, as well as the reveal of my top ten favorite series of the year!

The aquatope of white sand - Last season, I said this had the potential to be one of my favorite series this year, and I happy to say...it is! Kinda annoyed that the "visions" from the first half of the series never really went anywhere, but that's my only real complaint. Otherwise, the characters are great, the animation is gorgeous, and it's just a really, really good show!
Restaurant To Another World 2 - I don't know if this series really needed a sequel, especially several years after the first season originally aired, but I'm glad it got one anyway! I liked that this season brought back a lot of customers from the previous season, and of course, the food porn was incredible! Especially since a lot of the food highlighted this time were some of my personal favorites. I was always excited when it came to watch a new episode, to the point that I actually considered it one of my favorites of the year, as you'll see below!

The Night Beyond The Tricornered Window - I will say that this got off to bit of a rocky start, especially with how Hiyakawa was so possessive and controlling of Mikado (which is a BL trope I hate) but it got a lot better once the story started focusing on the main mystery. It helps that Hiyakawa was given an understandable backstory for why he acted that way and that the story never really portrayed their relationship as healthy or sexy, with several other characters calling out Hiyakawa's problematic behavior. Actually, for a story that's supposed to be BL, I have to say it kinda sucks as one, with a main couple who honestly don't have any real chemistry, but as a paranormal mystery, it's great!
Tropical-Rouge Precure - After complaining that Sango, Asuka, and Minori were being ignored in favor of Laura and Manatsu, this cour delivered by giving the other three Precures a couple of focus episodes each. It would have been nice for them to have been more spread out through the series, admittedly, but as much as I love Laura, it was kinda nice to have a break from the "Laura and Manatsu Show".
SAKUGAN - I'm not really sure how I feel about this mecha series, to be honest! It got off to an amazing start, and there are moments of that initial brilliance in later episodes, but there are also quite a few low moments. Overall, I really liked it, but I also thought it could have been even better.
takt op.Destiny - I feel the same about this series as I do about SAKUGAN. There were points I really, really liked, and I loved the character designs, especially for the Musicarts, but the villains were pretty weak and uninteresting, and the stuff with Anna near the end was just...weird.
Platinum End - Though I had heard some less than positive things about the manga this series is based off, I still wanted to give it a chance because I absolutely love Death Note and Bakuman, created by the same writer and mangaka. The verdict? Yeah, it's pretty bad. The main character, Mirai, is the complete opposite of Death Note's Light in that he's 100% opposed to killing in any situation, even self-defense, which is fine, but he also lacks Light's intelligence or charisma, making for a dull lead. The main villain, Metropolitan, is slighlty more interesting, but he's no L either. Honestly, the best character by far is Mukaido. It's too bad he's not the main character, because I think he has the most interesting story to tell. Also, there are a couple of sex scenes featuring minor characters that are purely there for shock value that I found rather off-putting. That being said, this first cour ended with one heck of a cliff-hanger, so of course I'll be sticking around for the second cour to see if things can get any worse. *laughs*

For the upcoming Winter season, I plan to keep watching Platinum End (assuming it resumes right away; details about the start of the second season haven't been given yet, but there was a title card for the thirteenth episode at the end of the last one) and Tropical-Rouge Precure. I'm also catching up with the first season of The Case Study of Vanitas (which Crunchyroll unexpectedly picked up a couple of weeks ago despite being originally a Funimation title) so I can watch the second season (assuming Crunchyroll also gets it from the start this time). For new shows, I'm hoping Crunchyroll also gets Requiem of the Rose King and Sasaki and Miyano, but those are the only two that have really caught my eye so far based on summaries.

And as for my Top 10 Favorite Series of 2021...

*drumroll*

1. Fruits Basket
2. The aquatope on white sand
3. Zombie Land Saga Revenge
4. Sk8 the Infinity *
5. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X
6. Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!
7. Laid-Back Camp Season 2 *
8. oddtaxi *
9.Heaven's Design Team
10. Restaurant To Another World

(* means I didn't watch it simulcast, but picked up later)

And new category! My Anime Movie of the Year was... the Sailor Moon Eternal movies, of course! I don't think I ever got around to gushing about them here, but while the first film admittedly had some pacing issues, the second one was amazing and was about all I ever wanted as an animated version of my favorite manga arc.

Wow, this was a good season! In fact, I think this was probably the best season I've seen so far since I started regularly keeping up with new shows a few years ago -- and I didn't even get the chance to see everything I was interested in.

Fruits Basket - Would it have been nice to have one more cour so that EVERYTHING in the manga could have been included in the anime? Sure, of course. Do I deep down care about anything they left out? Nah, not really. (And it's already been announced that we're getting some sort of prequel project focusing on the backstory of Tohru's parents, which was one of the more notable parts that was cut from the main series.) All the truly important stuff is still there. Is this still a wonderful adaptation of my favorite manga ever? HECK YEAH!

Zombie Land Saga Revenge - The first amazing season was a lot to live up to, but I think this sequel managed to do it right! It was great to finally get spotlight episodes on Tae and Yugiri and get some answers about why Kotaro was so desperate for Franchouchou to "save" Saga. The "stinger" at the end was, admittedly, weird and unexpected, but when you're dealing with zombie idols, that's kinda par for the course. And, hey, sequel hook! I definitely wouldn't mind another season of this.

To Your Eternity - A word of warning that this show is quite gory and features a lot of body horror, but if you can get past that, it's really rather fascinating to watch the alien(?) orb at the center of the story gradually gain sentience and intelligence through the various transformations they go through. It's also tough watching and knowing that the characters you get most attached to are probably going to die in the most heart-breaking ways, but, seriously, this is good stuff. Maybe keep some tissues handy, though!

Backflip - I have to admit when I first heard this anime was about a men's rhythmic gymnastics team, I thought it was a bit of a made-up sport like skate-leading in Skate Leading Stars. As far as I knew, rhythmic gymnastics was a women's only sport where they performed using different items like hoops, ribbons, and clubs, but it turns out that men's rhythmic gymnastics actually is a thing in Japan (and apparently Spain, of all places?), although it's more like a team floor routine with acrobatic lifts than the women's version I'm familiar with. Anyway, while the characters are paper-thin and the story is your generic sports anime plot, there was just something really...enjoyable about the whole show. Doesn't hurt that the routines are really well animated and gorgeous to watch! Happy to hear this is getting a movie!

Those Snow White Notes - Man, I just love music anime! The performances in this show are just fantastic. I wouldn't expect shamisen music to be so good, but it is! Ends on a bit of a downer, but hopefully we'll get more.

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun - More wholesome demon fun! It was interesting to see Iruma go through his "evil cycle" and the new teacher is a fun addition to the cast.

Tropical-Rouge Pretty Cure - Laura's still the best thing about this season. She really is a blast. Wish the villains were as interesting as their designs, but when their whole schtick is that they don't want to work, that's hard to do. Still bright and fun, though!

My Hero Academia - Some of my favorites parts of MHA are when the show focuses on their training at school, so I should have loved this new season in theory, but... The training tournament just went on for soooooo many episodes! It didn't help matters that it came after a two-part training drill OAV and that the first episode of the season was also another training exercise. It's just a LOT of training. On the plus side, the second half to the season is already off to an intriguing start.

Next season... There's not a lot of new stuff that's piquing my interest available on Crunchyroll. I'll be continuing with To Your Eternity, My Hero Academia, Tropical-Rouge Pretty Cure, and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, of course, and there are new seasons of IDOLiSH7 and My Next Life as a Villainess, which I'm very excited to watch, but most of the interesting new shows are going to Funimation. (Kageki Shoujo!!, The Case Study of Vanitas, RE-MAIN, Life Lessons with Uramichi-Oniisan). Might just catch up with one of the series I wasn't able to watch last season.

Sorry, I meant to post this earlier, but I had to take my laptop in for repairs due to a faulty keyboard. Ended up having to replace both the keyboard and motherboard, but fortunately, the computer was still (barely) under warranty, so I got it all fixed for free. Anyway, it's been a while since I did one of these, so I'm warning you, it's gonna be a long one!

Starting with two dream purchases for me!

First is a 90s-era Pegasus figure! Not totally mint-in-box since the brush and comb are missing (which the seller refunded me $20 for when I pointed it out), but the Pegasus itself is in fantastic condition. Considering that mint version sell for around the $600-$800, I consider it a steal that I managed to buy this for only $180 (after the refund). Love him so much!

Second, but no less squee-worthy, I finally own Amazoness Quartet plushes (and Super Sailor Moon)! I bought them in a lot with some other Sailor Moon plushes which I intend to resell. The AQ plushes tend to go for around $60-$75 individually, but I only spent about $23 each on average buying them in the lot, so another fantastic deal.

VERY IMAGE HEAVY UNDER THE CUT! )

Long time, no see! I'll hopefully get around to posting a new Merchandise Round-Up soon -- I've got some really cool stuff to show off! -- but for now, let's talk about the winter anime season. At the moment, I'm just going to focus on the shows I watched on Crunchyroll. I've just started a two week free trial at Funimation so I can marathon through the four shows that really interested me this season (Sk8 the Infinity, Skate-Leading Stars, Horimiya, and 2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team), which means I haven't really watched enough to form an opinion on them yet. I'll probably edit this post later with my thoughts when I finish.

Sk8 the Infinity: This is what I meant about making a sport exciting when talking about the surfing anime below. I don't care about skateboarding at all, but, dang, those races were thrilling and cool! Also loved the friendship between Reki and Langa, but ADAM is a world-class creep. Best show of the season by far.

Skate-Leading Stars: Y'all already know how much I love figure skating, so, to be honest, this show wasn't a hard sell for me. *laughs* I did have to turn off my brain a little bit to watch it, though, because the jumps were just so ridiculous. Apparently everybody can do quads in this world, even a guy who quit the sport as a novice in singles and decided to come back years later to compete as part of a skate-leading team. He even tried a quint at one point and landed a quad axel/quad toe loop/quad loop, which is just...impossible. Buuuut, even though I was annoyed that the teams wore the same costumes for both their short and free programs and wished they had showed more of the programs, what skating they did show was well animated, and I just really enjoyed it. No, not as good as Yuri!!! on Ice, but still a fun watch.

Heaven's Design Team - This was probably my favorite of the season -- fun and educational! After almost every episode, I ended up hitting Wikipedia to learn more about the animals featured. I wish they had decided they were going to use the localized English names from the manga for the characters from the start instead of suddenly switching three episodes in when I was just getting used to the Japanese names, but that's my only real complaint.

Horimiya - The first half of this series was fantastic! But starting around the halfway mark, when the titular couple started dating, it seemed to lose its way a little. Apparently a lot was cut from the manga in order to make the whole series fit into a single season, and it showed. I still really enjoyed it for the most part, but Hori became kinda unlikeable with her unreasonable possessiveness and her pushing an obviously uncomfortable Miyamura to beabusive to her in public as part of her masochistic kink
I really think the show would have worked better with another season and more chances to show the good side of their relationship, along with exploring some of the side characters more. (I especially liked the love triangle between Yuki, Tooru, and Sakura.)

Tropical-Rouge! Precure - I don't think I've ever seen such a HYPER magical girl lead. Manatsu can be a bit much to take in at times, but it's fun and colorful, and Laura the mermaid is kind of a wicked delight. It's only been a few episodes so far since it started mid-season, but I'm enjoying it!

2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team - This show really wasn't what I was expecting, which seems strange to say when it's clear from the title that it's a volleyball anime. I just wasn't expecting it to focus so much on volleyball? Especially based on the first couple of episodes. I thought it would focus more on Hajima working to become a better person and team player when his bullying of one of his old teammate resulted in said teammate trying to commit suicide (not a spoiler, BTW), which he does, somewhat, but... It's hard to explain. It doesn't help matters that it turns out thesuicide attempt was actually faked, seemingly absolving Hajima of most of his guilt.Anyway, it was a good series, but I couldn't help feeling that it didn't know what it wanted to be, if that makes sense?

Quintessential Quintuplets - I really enjoyed the first season, so I was looking forward to watching this continuation. Unfortunately, the pacing just felt...off almost all season, and the girls (especially looking at you, Ichika) backstabbing each other to try to win Futaro's heart was disappointing when they mostly avoided that in the first season. There were still some good parts, but, eh, I was left underwhelmed.

WAVE - Let's go surfing!! - Though I tend to enjoy sports anime, even for sports I don't particularly care for, this show really did nothing to make surfing seem exciting. Don't get me wrong; it's not terrible. It's a nice enough show, and I give it props for genuinely surprising me bykilling off one of the main characters early in the series in a surfing accident, but we didn't even find out for certainhe was deaduntil the second-to-last episode. There was really no reason to make it a mystery for the audience, many of whom were hopinghe was alive after allaccording to the comments at Crunchyroll. EDIT: Wait! I wrote this review before actually watching the final episode, and it turns outhe actually is alive? Or maybe he was supposed to be a spirit or a ghost?I don't know! They never really explained why he decided to go surfing during a storm either, when he knew how dangerous it could be. Now I'm really curious and want a second season! Or at least to see the movie this series was apparently based on.

Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! - A series of amusing shorts based on Bungo Stray Dogs, it was good, but mostly forgettable aside from the episode that turned most of the cast into pre-schoolers with Dazai as their teacher. Hilarious!

The spring season is looking to be REALLY good, with lots of sequels to series I already enjoy. Of course I'm going to continue with Tropical-Rouge! Precure, as well as the new seasons of Fruits Basket, Zombie Land Saga, My Hero Academia, and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun. That doesn't leave much room for new shows, but Those Snow White Notes, The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent, Bakuten!!, and Farewell, My Dear Cramer have all caught my eye. Guess I'll just have to see which ones land on Crunchyroll to help me decide!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Thanks to a free one-month subscription to Funimation, I was able to watch some of my more anticipated shows after all!

Haikyu! To The Top - If you remember, I wasn't that impressed with the first half that aired earlier in the year, but this second half went back to being the Haikyu I love. The match with Inarizaki High was intense!

Tonikawa: Over The Moon - SO CUTE! The premise is a little eye-rolly -- 18-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl get married after she saves his life -- but it's just so sweet and adorable, and I love how healthy their relationship is, despite the unusual circumstances. They respect and communicate with each other, and it's just really refreshing to see in a romance.

IDOLiSH7 Second Beat - Still the best idol show out there. The Re:vale duo is a fun addition to the cast, and I liked that some of the mysteries from the first season are being solved, like what happened to Tamaki's sister Aya.

Major 2nd - As I suspected, there were only a few episodes left to overlap with this season, but still a nice way to wrap things up until more (hopefully) comes out.

The Gymnastics Samurai - Not quite to the level of Yuri!!! on Ice, but still really good. I wish it had focused on more events than just the horizontal bar, though. I know it's the Jotaro's specialty, but I didn't even know he was also good at the other events until they showed him competing the All-Around at All-Japan since they never showed him practicing them that I remember. Also, I found Leo and his storyline rather pointless, to be honest.

Healin' Good Pretty Cure - This is the second Pretty Cure series I watched, and I liked it a lot more than first (the original). I think having a team instead of a duo worked more for me. Plus, Rate is probably the cutest animated dog ever! (And I'm saying this as someone who is not a dog-person at all.)

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle - I thought this would be funnier than it was, but it was still amusing enough. Kinda repetitive at times, though I rather liked some of the later episodes that had the demons actually having to interact with humans other than Sya. Still, probably would have been better broken up into 12 minute episodes.

Adachi and Shimamura - Like GS, I don't really know what the point of the little alien astronaut was -- she just seemed really out of place and unnecessary in an otherwise mundane, realistic setting -- but this was a really sweet slice-of-life yuri romance.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina - This show has major Kino's Journey vibes, which isn't a bad thing at all in my book. Unfortunately, though the animation is absolutely gorgeous, the show itself is very...uneven. Elaina's reactions, in particular, are very unpredictable, and not in a good way. About the only thing that stays constant about her character is that she's very conceited.

As for next season's picks... Skate-Leading Stars is definitely my top pick, but it's on Funimation. I'll have to pick it up the next time I get a free subscription, although I have watched the first episode already since I'm currently still subcribed. In terms of realism, Yuri!!! On Ice it is not, but it still seems fun! Also looking forward to the second season of Dr. Stone, but I'm assuming that'll land on Toonami, so I'll just wait. So what's actually on the list? From Crunchyroll's announcements, Heaven's Design Team, The Quintessential Quintuplets 2, and Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure (as well as continuing with Healin' Good -- I'm officially a fan now!) are the only ones that are catching my eye at the moment.

And since it's the end of the year, it's time for another round of my favorite anime of the year!

1. Fruits Basket
2. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken
3. Ascendance of a Bookworm *
4. Somali and the Forest Spirit *
5. Haikyu: To The Top
6. My Next Life As A Villainess: All Road Lead To Doom
7. Tonikawa: Over The Moon
8. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
9. Major 2nd
10. IDOLiSH7 Second Beat

* means I didn't watch it as it was airing, but caught up later

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! It's been a tough year for everyone, but I hope you were able to find a little joy in the holiday at least.

My tree this year! I was able to do something I've been wanting to do for a few years -- decorate the tree with (mainly) skate ornaments. There are a few filler ornaments and sentimental favorites, but the vast majority of it is covered in skates.

As for gifts, my sister gave me an adorable pair of Luna slipper socks, a Sailor Moon umbrella, and a Fruits Basket Tohru Funko Pop that's on pre-order, so I'll have to wait for it to come out. I also got a couple more skate ornaments for my tree (except they're actually boots; Mom didn't notice they don't have blades on them), a really pretty skate pendant necklace, a couple of pieces of wall decor, a new bedding set, the live-action Mulan Blu-Ray, the animated Mulan/Mulan II DVD set (to make up for the one Mom got rid of years ago without my permission), new CDs from Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli, new masks (of course!), a tumbler, and slippers, along with the usual clothes, candy, and money.

This was a pretty weak season aside from Fruits Basket, which continued to be amazing, and Major 2nd. I only picked up two new shows.

Fruits Basket – You already know I love this! Can’t wait for the final season next year.

Major 2nd – Good to see this finally back on a regular schedule after some COVID-related bumps. I’m enjoying it as much as I did the first season! I like the fact that even though Daigo’s team is made up of mostly girls, how the other teams (mostly boys) react to them is varied and nuanced, rather than everybody thinking they are automatically not good enough to play against boys (although there’s definitely some of that, too).

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax – I’m usually not a fan of recap episodes, but since it’s been five years(?) since the second season aired, I think one would have been really helpful in this case. I remembered the three main characters and some of the more important secondary characters, but I had no idea who anybody else was with no helpful reminders. Anyway, this final season was good, but nothing special. I just didn’t think the whole prom storyline needed almost a whole season to tell and would have worked better as a movie. Also, the conflict over Yukina’s supposed “codependence” was super-weak.

Rent-A-Girlfriend – The only totally new show I picked up this season, I wouldn’t say it’s objectively “good” by any means (except animation-wise – it looks great!), but I still found it mostly trashy fun. I just wish it hadn’t gone the harem route. The ex (Mami) and the rental girlfriend (Chizuru) were more than enough! Ruka is super annoying, and Sumi’s just not all that interesting (although, to be fair, she only played a big part in one episode).

Ahiru no Sora – For a basketball anime, I have to say that this show worked better when it wasn’t focusing on basketball. The games just dragged on and on and on, and it’s kind of ridiculous that in fifty episodes, they never managed to win a single game!I mean, it’s nice to see some realism in a sport anime, but come on! There’s realistic, then just plain frustrating. Well, it’s finally over, and I’m not really holding my breath for more.

Next season is looking a little better, mostly because the continuations of series I really enjoy. The only new show I’m definitely planning to check out is Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You, and I’m looking forward to the continuations of Haikyuu!! To The Top and Idolish7 Second Beat (finally coming back after hiatus!). Major 2nd is also continuing, but I’m guessing it’s only going to be for half the season, due to the hiatuses? I also really want to watch Taiso Samurai, Wandering Witch – The Journey Of Elaina, and Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, but they’re all Funimation shows, so I’ll have to wait until the next time I subscribe.

Long time, no see!

This was a bit of a weird season with all the COVID-19 related production shutdowns. It ended up affecting two of the shows I was watching, the second seasons of IDOLiSH7 and Major 2nd. Though Major 2nd keeps stopping and resuming, I'm not sure when we'll get more IDOLiSH. Luckily, Funimation sent me an offer for a two month free trial, so I was able to replace those shows with the second season of Kaguya-sama (Yay!) and Wave! Listen To Me. (Also Arte and Kakushigoto, but I haven't finished those yet.)

Fruits Basket (Season 2) - Love, love, love, love, LOVE! What more is there to say?

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom - Cute and fun! I'm really glad it's already been announced that this is getting a second season, although I kind of wonder where they'll go from here considering thatCatarina has already "finished" the game, so to speak.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Season 2) - I was thrilled that my Funimation free trial meant that I could watch the second season after all! Maybe not quiiiiiite as funny as the first season, but Ishigami's backstory made him much more sympathetic, and Miko was a nice addition to the cast.

Sing "Yesterday" to Me - This was pretty good up to the ending, which I found pretty unsatisfying since the couple I was rooting for broke up for rather vague reasons to hook up the couple that didn't really have any chemistry or development at all.Honestly, I found Rou and Haru, the younger love interests, really unnecessary. I was much more interested in Shinako getting over her dead boyfriend and finding love again with Rikuo.

Wave, Listen to Me! - This show has some of the weirdest eyes I've ever seen in an anime. It was like the irises had shadows or something? It's hard to explain, but it was weird looking, and I never quite got used to it. Other than that, it was a fun series, although whether you like it or not will likely depend on how grating you find Minare and all her rants. She can be a bit...much. Her voice actress was fantastic, though!

Ahiru no Sora - The basketball game that made up the first half of the season seemed like it went on FOREVER, but the drama in the second half makes up for it.

Woodpecker Detective's Office - Eh, this series was pretty disappointing, honestly. With these kind of detective shows, the key to making them work is good characters, but the main character is really unlikeable, and you're left wondering why his friends (especially Kyousuke) continue to be friends with him when they're aware that he is a selfish mooch. The opening song bops, though! Seriously the best part of the show.

The summer season looks pretty threadbare, with the virus leading to some shows I was looking forward to being postponed. I'll continue with Fruits Basket, Ahiru no Sora, and Major 2nd (assuming production continues), but the only new shows that caught my eye are the new season of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU and Rent-a-Girlfriend.

Long time, no post! Here's a wrap-up of the last anime season:

I'd say it was a pretty good season overall. A lot of what I watched was continuations from the fall season – Chihayafuru, My Hero Academia, Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, and Ahiru no Sora (which is continuing into spring as well) – but I really enjoyed the new shows I picked up.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken – If you haven't already watched this, do yourself a favor and just do it. Seriously, it's fabulous, and I have a feeling it will definitely make my Best Series of the Year list. It's just so imaginative and passionate and…really, really, really good!

Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It – Awkward title aside, this actually was a pretty cute and funny romance! I was a little worried at first that all the experiments they did would become repetitive and that it might have worked better as a short, but they actually managed to keep things fresh most of the time. And the main couple actually kissed and confessed at the end! That can be surprisingly rare sometimes…

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard – It's hard to put my finger on why I liked this show so much… I just did! Even if it did rely a whole lot on coincidence and the "cases" weren't all that interesting, I liked the characters, and I've always been a little fascinated by gemstones.

Haikyu!! – I was really looking forward to this after absolutely loving the first three seasons, but I have to say I was a little disappointed. I mean, it was still great, but the first half when they're focusing on the two training camps was kinda dull. Things are picking up now that they're actually at Nationals, though! Too bad we have to wait until summer for the next part.

For next season, it looks like it'll be another season of continuing shows. I'll be continuing with Ahiru no Sora, Idolish7 Second Beat, the new season of Major 2nd, and most importantly, the second season of Fruits Basket! (Finally into the part where the old anime left off – so excited to see it animated!) That doesn't leave a lot of room in my schedule for new stuff, and a lot of the shows I did want to watch (the second season of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (so annoyed Crunchyroll didn't get this since they have the first season!), Arte, Tamayomi, and Wave, Listen to Me!) aren't streaming on Crunchyroll, but Woodpecker's Detective Office, Sing "Yesterday" For Me, and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Roads Lead to Doom! have caught my eye.

Gonna try to post a Merchandise Round-up soon. It's been a while since I did one, and I've got some pretty cool stuff to show off!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I promised a review of the 2019 fall season, so here it is!

Chihayafuru - So, so happy that this series finally got a continuation! Still as good as ever, and I"m glad I rewatched the first two seasons over the summer, so things are still fresh in my mind.
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun - Is it weird to call a show about a school for demons wholesome? Because that's really the word that best sums up this surprising little show. I pretty much just picked it at random because I wanted to watch at least one Halloween-appropriate show this season, but I actually loved it, even if it was clearly made with younger viewers in mind. There's still enough to keep adults (and those young at heart) entertained.
My Hero Academia - Maybe not the best season of MHA so far, but even just an "okay" MHA season is still really good, and it is picking up steam after a bit of a slow start. I enjoyed the addition of All-Might's old sidekick to the cast and learning more about Kirishima.
Ahiru no Sora - I do really love the fact that a shonen protagonist is inspired by his mom instead of his dad for once, but some of that good will is squandered by the fact that all the boys in this show are such pervs... Really not necessary. Ah, well. If you ignore that, it is a pretty good sports series with some great jokes and fun characters.

And, actually, I just realized all four of those shows are carrying over to the winter season -- how in the world did I manage that? *laughs* That doesn't leave much room in my schedule for new shows, but based only on summaries, I might check out Smile Down The Runway, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard, and Science Fell In Love, So I Tried To Prove It, depending on who picks them up for streaming. Oh, and the new season of Haikyu! is a must see as well.

And my picks for the Top Ten Series of 2019 are.... *drumroll*

1. Fruits Basket
2. O Maidens In Your Savage Season *
3. My Roommate Is A Cat
4. Chihayafuru (3rd Season)
5. given
6. The Promised Neverland
7. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
8. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun
9. My Hero Academia (Fourth Season)
10. Dr. Stone **

* Didn't watch the simulcast since it was on HiDive, but I got a free one month subscription with my Sentail Filmworks Black Friday order, which allowed me to finally see it. Absolutely loved it! Well worth a watch.

** Watching the dub on Toonami, so I'm a few episodes behind, but I've liked what I've seen so far enough to feel it deserves to be on the list.

Now, fanfiction reviews! I answered three different year-end review questionnaires on my Tumblr, so I'm just going to link to them instead of copy and pasting. This entry is already getting long enough!

Set One
Set Two
Set Three

My review of the fall anime season and my choices for the Top Ten Anime of 2019 will be posted sometime in the next few days...hopefully.

...and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! I hope you had a wonderful day.

I don't think I ever got around to posting my tree this year, so here it is:

I mentioned my goal was to eventually have a tree of mostly skate ornaments and my family decided to run with it, gifting me not only with some new ornaments, but some other skating-related decor!

Other things I got this year: clothes, several pairs of slipper socks, a Christmas mug, the new Celine Dion CD, Stella Color wedding figurines of Usagi, Rei, and Ami (I'll post a pic during my next Merchandise Round-up), the limited edition Blu-Ray set of the first part of the Fruits Basket remake, and a bunch of other anime DVDs/Blu-Rays from Sentai Filmworks's awesome Black Friday sale. (Season 1 & 2 Haikyu! DVD sets, The World Is Still Beautiful DVD set, Clannad: The Motion Picture DVD, Love Stage Blu-Ray set, Hataraki Man Blu-Ray set, Hitorijime 'My Hero' Blu-Ray set, Land of the Lustrous Blu-Ray set, Dive!! Blu-Ray set, and Princess Principal Blu-Ray set -- mostly blind buys! But at the prices they were going for, not much of a risk.)

I'm back! Well, technically I've been back for a couple of weeks, but after six weeks of no Internet, I've been busy trying to catch up with everything I missed in the meantime. Among those things, the fall anime season. Two of the series I started out watching on Crunchyroll -- Dr. Stone and Fire Force -- are now airing on Toonami, so I ended up just completing three series this season, only one of them actually new and not a continuation from last season.

Fruits Basket - Still loving and can't wait for it to pick up again next year, though to be honest, I'm a little surprised I haven't cried as much as expected to. I'm thinking it's the same thing that happened with Sailor Moon Crystal in that I've read the manga (and watched the first anime) so many times that I've become a little desensitized to it. Doesn't mean it's not amazing, though! I particularly enjoyed the rewrite of Ritsu's introduction, which I thought was an improvement over both the anime and the first anime. Uotani's backstory was also wonderfully done. I actually did cry at that!

given - Picked this up mainly because I usually enjoy anime about bands, but I loved it. It's BL, but it's good BL. Like, seriously. And Mafuyu's song in episode nine? Incredible. I'm not usually the type to rewatch scenes over and over again, but I think I've watched the concert at least four or five times so far.

Mix - I enjoyed this series, but the ending arc where they're playing in the tournament seemed kinda lackluster, mainly becausenobody seemed to be taking the games too seriously. In fact, when the Meisei team finally lost, nobody seemed that torn up about it, which is weird for a sports anime. I suspect it's because the author is playing the long game, not wanting them to actually achieve their goals until later in their high school careers, but there could have been at least some tension.
Ah, well. The manga is still ongoing, so I do hope we get another season eventually. I did like the series overall.

Next season, I'll definitely be watching the new seasons of My Hero Academia and Chihayafuru, and I'm thinking about checking out Ahiru no Sora and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, but that's all has caught my eye so far.

A little late, but as promised, a wrap-up of the spring anime season.

Unfortunately, only a few shows caught my interest, but they were all pretty good.

Fruits Basket – Love, love, love! I'm still over the moon that we're getting a manga-compliant reboot. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn close. I can't wait until we finally get to the parts not covered in the first anime!

Ao-chan Can't Study – I'm kind of surprised I liked this so much, honestly. I didn't even start watching it until well into the season when I decided to see if there were any interesting shorts (episodes are only about twelve minutes long). Creepy father is creepy, but if you ignore that, it's actually a rather sweet romance. I especially liked Ao's love interest, Kijima, who is genuinely a nice guy who really respects her and her boundaries.

MIX – Mitsuru Adachi really is a master of baseball stories, even if his character designs are all Xerox copies. (Seriously, if you took a random screencap from "Mix" and "Cross Game", you probably wouldn't be able to tell the characters apart.) A little slow at first, but now that the brothers are in high school, I think things are starting to pick up.

Bungo Stray Dogs – Just as good as the previous seasons.

Midnight Occult Civil Servants – This was a bit of a random pick, but I tend to like supernatural anime, and this was a pretty good one. Nothing special, but enjoyable enough. I liked that it included a variety of international mythical beings instead of sticking with just Japanese mythology.

As for next season, there's not that really interests me this time either. Huh. I'm thinking of checking out Dr. Stone and Fire Force, and of course I'll be continuing Fruits Basket and Mix. I'm disappointed that O Maidens In Your Savage Season isn't on Crunchyroll, because that was the one I was most looking forward to, but the past couple of seasons, I've noticed that CR will sometimes start airing shows already picked up other companies a couple of weeks later, so I'm hoping that maybe it'll be one of those late pick-ups for them.

Oops, it's been a while since I posted anything here! Well, here's my wrap-up of the winter anime season:

My Roommate is a Cat - SOOOOOOOOO CUTE! Honestly, this was the show I looked forward to watching the most every week. It's just so...well, CUTE! I want a kitty! And I definitely identified a lot with Subaru, the main (human) character. He's basically the male version of me (except I've always loved cats).

The Promised Neverland - This show was so good that it was almost tough to watch at times? If that makes sense? Like, it did a really great job at keeping the tension up, making you worried that their plans wouldn't work. Some stuff was a little eye-roll worthy, but still a great show, and I'm really looking forward to the second season next year.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War - This was a rare comedy that actually got funnier as the season progressed. You would think that a show about two people competing not to confess their feelings for each other first would become frustrating pretty quick, but, nope. And Chika is chaotic love.

Domestic Girlfriend - This was the show I most wanted to see this season. It started of really well, but became kind of dull in the second half. Honestly, with such a guilty pleasure premise (boy in a love triange with both his stepsisters, one of whom is also his teacher), the show should have leaned in a more soap opera-y direction. I'm still interested in checking out the manga, though. From what I've heard, they cut out a lot of stuff to fit into a twelve episode cour.

The Quintessential Quintuplets - It seems like it's been a while since I watched a traditional harem show, and this was actually a pretty good one. I liked the hook that while we know that Futaro will marry one of the sisters right from the beginning, since they're identical quintuplets, you can imagine the bride as whoever you like best. (Miku is the best, btw.)

Ace Attorney - Ah, finally more Mitsurugi! He didn't stay around the whole cour, unfortunately, but it was fun watching him play the defense attorney instead of the prosecutor. I also liked that the three cases covered by this final cour were all connected to Mayoi's family.

B-Project - Zeccho Emotion - Why was it necessary to add another band to the group? I could barely keep track of the first three! Not that it really matters, really. This season was okay, I guess, but nothing special. (After watching Idolish7, I'm apparently spoiled for boy band idol shows.)

Rinshi!! Ekodachan - The idea behind this series of shorts -- that each episode is produced by a different group of people -- was more interesting than the show itself, honestly, but it was pretty neat to see all the different interpretations and animation styles. I didn't bother watching the accompanying interviews.
Oh, and I was watching Sword Art Online: Alicization, but then Toonami started showing the dub, so now I'm just waiting for them to catch up with where I left off to continue.
Next season? I'm watching Fruits Basket. That is all.
Haha, no, that's not true. I'm sure there are some other good shows coming out... Well, maybe not on Crunchyroll. (So annoyed that Carole & Tuesday is a Netflix show!) I'll check out the third season of Bungo Stray Dogs and maybe the new show, Midnight Occult Civil Servants, but that's pretty much it other than Attack on Titan Season 3, which I'm sure Toonami will air. Oh, well, guess it's a good season to catch up with old shows. (Already started Haikyu!! and love it!)

But, seriously, FRUITS BASKET!!!!!!!!

I was going to resurrect the "year in review" meme I used to do years ago, but I came across this one on Tumblr, which has more interesting questions.

1. List of fics completed this year:

Sailor Moon
High School Memory (Spirit of Fire side story)
The Longest Night (Spirit of Fire side story)

Fruits Basket
The Next Step

And though the question asks for completed fics, I’m going to add my WIPs: Friends With Benefits (Kaleido Star), Metamorphosis (Sailor Moon), Stolen Dreams (Sailor Moon).

2. Number of words written: Just counting the completed stories…about 9,700, but that’s kind of cheating because I wrote half of The Next Step years ago.

3. Your most popular fic: That I’ve written this year? None of them were popular. Or rather, they were equally unpopular with just one or two reviews.

4. Your personal fav: Can I pick from my WIPs? Because I really love what I’ve written of Metamorphosis so far. But from the completed fics, probably High School Memory?

5. Your fav scene: Again, my favorite scenes are from my WIPs, but if I had to choose from the completed stories, I would probably pick either the discussion between Saburo and Keitaro at the hospital in The Longest Night or Hiro freaking out over Hatsuharu’s “gift” in The Next Step.

6. A fic or scene that challenged you: The last scene of The Longest Night. I’m still not entirely happy with it, but writing argumentative scenes is not really my strong suit… Honestly, part of the reason I originally skipped this part in Spirit of Fire was because I didn’t want to write the scene where Saburo disowns Takara!

7. A line of writing you’re proud of: I wouldn’t necessarily say I'm proud of this line, but it just really amuses me because Keitaro rarely gets the chance to be snarky. I’m going to post a few lines to give it some context with the line in question bolded.

Excerpt from "High School Memory" )

Now, this part from “The Longest Night” would probably be my choice for the writing I’m most proud of from this year’s completed stories. I just really like the image of the cup floating in front of Keitaro’s face because he can’t really see well without his glasses.

Excerpt from "The Longest Night" )

And, as a bonus, here’s an excerpt from Metamorphosis that I really like:

Excerpt from "Metamorphosis )

8. A comment that touched you: Like I mentioned before, I haven’t received many reviews for my new stories, but BlueLion and The Time Traveler have been long time fans of my stories, so I was really happy to see their reviews!

9. Something that inspired your writing: I can’t think of anything in particular that inspired the actual stories, but I credit @floraone’s stories for reminding me how good fanfiction can be and inspiring me to start writing again.

10. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc): Honestly, the fact that I’m just writing again is my proudest accomplishment! I was really burned out when I decided to quit a couple of years ago and didn’t think I would ever write again, so I’m really happy I feel inspired again, even if sometimes it feels like I’ve lost all my talent…

And, what the heck, let's just do the other meme, too!

Since this post is getting too long... )

I mentioned in my last entry that I had completed yet another new story, and now it is time for the reveal...

The Next Step (also found at AO3)

Yes, it's a Fruits Basket fic! The recent announcement about the upcoming anime reboot inspired me to resurrect a story I started a few years ago for my claim at [livejournal.com profile] 15pairings. Honestly, I'm not sure why I never finished it in the first place. Once I started writing, it only took me a couple of days to finish. Trying to decide on a title took longer. Seriously. (And I'm still not totally happy with what I chose...) I guess I didn't know how to end it? If I had an ending in mind when I first started writing it, I long forgot it. Anyway, the community is dead, but who knows? I might just decide to finish my claim if the new anime inspires me enough! I only have six or seven pairings left to go, after all. (I can't remember I used "Kiss Me" for the claim or not.)

Hana to Yume Magazine Lists New Anime for Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket Manga

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

I kinda lost hope of this ever happening, but Fruits Basket is finally getting the Crystal/Brotherhood treatment, with a manga-faithful new anime series.

*dances*

I think I'm even more excited about this than I was about Sailor Moon Crystal. Fruits Basket is my favorite manga of all time, and the original anime is still one of my top ten favorites, so I'm thinking Kaleido Star is going to be pushed off the throne with this new anime if it is a good as I imagine it will be.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Finally finished with the season! I got a little behind thanks to marathoning Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! and D.Gray-man Hallow when they unexpectedly became available on Crunchyroll mid-season due to the awesome new partnership between CR and Funimation. (Hope the second season of The Heroic Legend of Arslan will follow soon.) Anyway, here are my thoughts (spoilers under the cuts):

ReLIFE - This was definitely my favorite show of the season! It was really funny, and I loved the chemistry between all the characters (although Kariu could be kinda annoying at times). I'm hoping that we'll get another season of this eventually since it's a bit strange to endin the middle of Arata's "ReLIFE" (and the source web manga is still ongoing), but at least it otherwise stopped in a good place (similar to the Fruits Basket anime).

Sweetness & Lightning/Momokuri - I'm listing these two together because they're both super-duper cute and adorable. Of the two, I did prefer Sweetness & Lightning (my second favorite of the season), but Momokuri was also a lot of fun, even if the female lead was a bit of a stalker.

Orange - I really liked this series, but I have to admit feeling frustrated at points with Naho, who kept saying and doing the wrong things despite her future self telling her what to do. Then again, if she followed her future self's instructions to the letter (heh), there wouldn't be much of a story, so I guess it's fine. Still, a very touching show.

Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! - You know, I think this season was even more ridiculous than the first one...yet I liked it even more!

91 Days - Pretty good gangster series. I think I would have liked it a little more if I felt more for the characters, but the only one I was attached to was poor Corteo. Still, the plot had some surprising twists.

Planetarium - I'm not really sure what to say about this series. At only five episodes and no real plot, it felt kinda...pointless, yet I still enjoyed watching it.

B-Project - Too many pretty boys to really get to know all of them in only twelve episodes -- I couldn't even remember the names of most of them -- and the ending kinda came out of nowhere, but the music was really catchy and I enjoyed the music industry setting.

Ace Attorney - Like I said about the first season, I found this series entertaining enough as somebody who had never played the games before, but nothing amazing. (And I didn't like this second season quite as much as I liked the first, probably because the prosecutor guy was missing until the final case.)

D-Gray-man HALLOW - Kanda is one of my favorite characters in this series, so it was nice to finally get some backstory on him, but compared to the first series where everything felt a little too drawn out, this arc felt like it had way too much going on.

As for the upcoming season, I can't wait to watch Yuri! On Ice. So, so, so, so, so, so excited! I'm actually really tempted to buy a subscription to Crunchyroll so I don't have to wait a week to watch, but, eh, Christmas is coming up soon, so I need to save my money. The second season of Sound Euphonium is also a must-watch, and based on the preview guide at ANN, I'll probably check out Izetta: The Last Witch, March Comes In Like a Lion, Magic-Kyun! Renaissance, and ClassicaLoid.

Yen Press Licenses Fruits Basket, 2 Other Manga by Natsuki Takaya

It's about time that somebody license-rescued Fruits Basket! It's way too good a series to be out-of-print. I already have the old Tokyopop volumes, so mainly I'm just happy on other people's behalf, but I'm also excited about the two other series that were licensed: Liselotte and Witch's Forest and Twinkle Stars. I'm a little concerned about Liselotte, since its been on hiatus for going on three years due to Ms. Takaya's health, but Twinkle Stars is complete, which is great. I wonder if that Fruits Basket sequel that was announced a couple of months ago will end up being licensed as well. I haven't really heard anything since it was announced. Still don't know what it is supposed to be about...
