Hana to Yume Magazine Lists New Anime for Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket Manga

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

I kinda lost hope of this ever happening, but Fruits Basket is finally getting the Crystal/Brotherhood treatment, with a manga-faithful new anime series.

*dances*

I think I'm even more excited about this than I was about Sailor Moon Crystal. Fruits Basket is my favorite manga of all time, and the original anime is still one of my top ten favorites, so I'm thinking Kaleido Star is going to be pushed off the throne with this new anime if it is a good as I imagine it will be.

After a pretty blah summer season, I'm happy to report that the fall season was much, much better!

Recovery of a MMO Junkie - This series wasn't even originally on my radar, but after reading the reviews of the first episode during ANN's Preview Guide, I thought it sounded interesting and gave it a shot. I'm glad I did! It was nice to see an anime romance centered on people around my age for once, and it was just really cute and funny. Loved it!

Anime Gataris - This is more along the lines of what I wanted last season's Gamers to be - a show about a geeky subject that focuses almost completely on said geeky subject, instead of romance. And the last few episodes? Crazy, but in the best meta way.

The Ancient Magus' Bride - I've always been a little tempted to pick up the manga for this series, but I have to admit that the initial premise turned me off a bit. Thankfully, the anime allowed me to check the story out for free. Even though the premise is a bit problematic, it is actually handled pretty well, and I love how well-researched all the obscure magic stuff is. Also, some of the scenes were just stunning. Continuing into next season.

March comes in like a lion - This new season was much stronger than the previous seasons. I liked that it didn't focus so much on shogi tournaments and more on the characters, especially the sisters. Hina's bullying story, in particular, was quite moving. I think this is continuing?

Kino's Journey - the Beautiful World - - I watched the original series that came out about ten? fifteen? years ago and remember really liking it, but this sequel/remake was just okay. The Kino in this series is almost a different character than the one I remember.

Elegant Yokai Apartment Life - I really wish this series had focused more on the title "Apartment Life" instead of lead character Yushi's boring school life. Honestly, I'm not sure what the point of having him live with a bunch of yokai and learn magic was when it rarely affected the plot...

Love is like a Cocktail - It was cute. Basically all you can say about a three minute short!

Black Clover - I was watching the Japanese version, but when Toonami announced they were going to air the dub, I decided to stop and switch over to the English version, so I'm way behind. Toonami hasn't even gotten to the episode where I left off yet. Still, considering how incredibly ANNOYING Asta's seiyuu's voice is, I don't mind. The episodes I did see were pretty good, though.

And my ranking of My Top Ten Anime of 2017:

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju (2nd season)
Sakura Quest
Recovery of a MMO Junkie
Natsume's Book of Friends 6
- I actually didn't watch this when it was simulcast because I needed to watch all the previous seasons first, but I really loved the whole series.
Anime Gataris
The Ancient Magus' Bride
Tsudere Children -
This was another show I didn't watch when it was first airing, but checked out later due to good buzz.
My Hero Academia (2nd season)
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga (2nd season)
Love Tyrant
March comes in like a lion

Not much has really caught my eye for next season other than Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card. (So, so excited! And I just bought the first manga volume, too.) Other possible picks are: Gakuen Babysitters, Marchen Madchen, and Takunomi. Maybe Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls since I watched the first season way back when.

Happy New Year!

Sailor Moon Crystal's Anime 4th Season Revealed As 2-Part Film Project

Man, I was really looking foward to an actual anime season. I don't get what it is about the Dead Moon Arc that makes people want to mess with it when adapting it to other mediums. The majority of fans consider it the best part of the manga, so why can't we ever have a real true adaptation of it (as much as I do love SuperS and Amour Eternal)? On the other hand, a twelve or thirteen episode season would be about six to six and a half hours, so if the movies are, say, about two-and-a-half hours long, maybe they won't cut too much and can still remain fairly true to the manga. Plus, it could be really gorgeously animated with a movie budget... I just don't know what to feel. Cautiously optimistic, but kinda disappointed?

I haven't actually finished any of these yet, but I'm close enough to give my overall thoughts.

Sakura Quest - My favorite this season! It reminds me a lot of Shirobako, another favorite of mine, since it focuses on a group of five female friends, and I think it was actually animated by the same company, too. The adventures of a rural town tourism board aren't quite as exciting as the workings of an anime company, but it was still a lot of fun, and I think the main characters are actually a little more interesting and developed than Shirobako's. This is continuing for another season, so I'm looking forward to more!

My Hero Academia - This season had a bit of a slow start, but once the sports festival began, and especially the battles, it was fantastic! I especially liked that some of the more secondary and minor characters were developed more. I actually remember most of their names and powers, now! Another one that is continuing for another season.

Kado: The Right Answer - The CG in this was just gorgeous (at least when not used on the actual characters)! It also has a rather interesting, thought provoking premise. It reminds me a bit of the movie Arrival, which I actually just watched for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Love Tyrant - This show won't be for everybody. It's a parody anime, and the humor is kind of dark at times. Still, I found it quite funny and amusing. Also, the opening song is SUPER catchy. Everytime I watch it, it makes me just want to dance!

Tsuki ga Kirei - The best words to describe this show are pleasant and nice. Not the most exciting or interesting show out there, but not a bad way to pass the time. (My favorite parts of the show were actually the mini-shorts after the credits focusing on the minor characters, who I wish had more of a role in the main show.)

Attack on Titan - Since I watched the first season dubbed on Toonami and was used to the voices, I decided to watch the second season on Toonami as well, so I'm still a few episodes behind. What I've seen so far, though, has been really good, with some genuinely shocking revelations.

As for next season, my definite plans (if available on a free streaming site) are to watch the continuations of Sakura Quest and My Hero Academia, the new season of Hell Girl, and new series Welcome to the Ballroom and Love and Lies. On the maybe list are Restaurant to Another World, Yokai Apato no Yuga na Nichijo, DIVE!!, 18if, Vatican Miracle Examiner, Princess Principal, and Gamers!. I want to check out the ANN Preview Guide before making any definite decisions on those, though.

EDIT: Argh, stupid Amazon Strike with the ridiculous double paywall got Welcome to the Ballroom and Hell Girl. There goes my two most anticipated titles! (Atlhough after recently hearing some things about the Ballroom manga, I was a little less excited.) Seriously, though, this sucks! I wouldn't necessarily mind buying an occasional monthly subscription to binge the shows they have, but I'm not going to also pay for Prime in order to do so. Well, I hope some of my maybe titles turn out to be good...

CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura Manga Gets New Anime Project

Ooh, cool! Not only are we getting a new manga sequel series, we're getting a new anime, too. No word yet if it's going to be a series, an OAV, or a movie, or if it's going to be based on the original series, the sequel series, or even an anime reboot of the original manga a la Sailor Moon Crystal and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but whatever it turns out to be, I'm really looking forward to it.

Found this fun manga meme at a review blog I like to read, so I'd thought I'd bring it over here.

1. What was your first manga? Sailor Moon

2. What is your most expensive manga? Assuming that we're talking about individual books and not boxsets, then probably the Azumanga Daioh omnibus (from Yen Press). The retail price was $24.99 according to the cover, although I know I didn't pay that much. Still, I imagine I still paid around the $15-20 range for it.

3. What was your least expensive manga? The manga I got for free as gifts, obviously! But sticking to manga I paid for myself... Well, I actually bought the two volumes of The Flower of the Deep Sleep off the Amazon Marketplace for only a cent each, but I still had to pay shipping on them, so they ended up being $4 each. Still a pretty good deal, though not amazing. Hmm, I vaguely recall paying a dollar (or maybe $2?) for a manga on clearance at Half-Price Books, but I'm not sure which one it was... Call Me Princess, maybe? Yeah, I think that was the one. It's something I probably would have never picked up unless it was that cheap. (Just checked the price tag that's still on it -- $2.49, but I still don't think I paid that much for it.)

4. What is the most boring manga you own? Miyuki-chan in Wonderland -- pure fanservice, and not even that sexy. Still, it was CLAMP, so...

5. What is your favorite manga series? Fruits Basket! Although if NANA was ever completed, it might knock FB from the top spot.

6. What is the most relatable manga series you own? Kimi ni Todoke, definitely. I identify with Sawako like "woah"!

7. What is one manga you own that is based off an anime? As in the anime came first? Umm... I don't think I have any. I guess the closest would be Story of Saiunkoku, since the anime and manga were both based off the original light novels. (And I'm pretty sure the anime came before the manga.)

8. What is your rarest manga? Well, I don't know about rare in the general sense, but one of the most difficult volumes for me to find was Name of the Flower, Vol. 1, since I had the misfortune to order it right before CMX went out of business. I searched for around eight months for a decently priced used copy. And I still don't own print copies of Red River Vols. 15-17, but I have digital copies, which is good enough. (If I found those print copies for really cheap, I'd probably pick them up, but I'm not going out of my way to search for them.)

9. What is the most reprinted manga you own? I have no idea, really. I guess if you interpret the question to mean which had the most editions, then Sailor Moon might count: chapters in Mixxzine/Smile, Chix Comics editions (the single-chapter floppies), the Tokyopop graphic novels, and the new Kodansha graphic novels. (And I actually own most of those.)

10. What is the most popular manga you own? I imagine it's either Fruits Basket or Death Note, depending on which demographic you're talking about.

11. What is the most damaged manga you own? No question, the Tokyopop GNs of Sailor Moon. I've got pages falling out of a few of those.

12. Which manga has the most amazing art? I'd say A Bride's Story has the most amazing art in a technical sense -- Emma from the same mangaka is really beautiful as well -- but my heart really lies with Yuu Watase's style. CLAMP is no slouch themselves, especially when Mokona's the lead artist, like in Card Captor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth.

13. What is the oldest published manga that you own? Well, I know that Sailor Moon was the first manga I bought, but I don't think it's the oldest published, especially if going by when it first came out in Japan. Looking at the dates at MyAnimeList and Anime News Network, it looks like the oldest would be Let's Stay Together Forever, which came out in 1989. (Have no clue about American publishing dates.)

14. What is the newest published manga you own? Looks like Vol. 3 of Yukarism. (This time, talking about what was released in the U.S.)

15. What are some of the most recent manga you have purchased? The aforementioned Yukarism Vol. 3, Meteor Prince Vols. 1 & 2, Utsabora omnibus, Skip-Beat! omnibus (with Vols. 31-33), Arata: The Legend Vols. 21 & 22... Those are the ones that I remember off the top of my head.

I tag anybody who wants to do this!

It's over! The last episode of Sailor Moon Crystal aired today and was pretty good. The final battle was a bit lackluster, but like I said in my review of the new SeraMyu based on this arc, it's just not very excitingto battle a planet. (That's probably why they left out the whole "Wiseman/Death Phantom physically merging with Nemesis" thing from the first anime.) Other than that, though, I really enjoyed the episode and still have my fingers crossed that a new season will be announced eventually. They certainly set things up for a continuation, what with the granting of new powers and Chibi-Usa coming straight back. Of course, that's what happened in the manga chapter, but if they were for sure not going to continue, it would have been easy enough to rewrite things to leave those parts out.

Plus, ANN is reporting that Toei plans to make some announcements about "future developments", so I'd say new season is looking very likely!

From Anime News Network: Natsuki Takaya Launches Fruits Basket another Sequel Web Manga

Huh. Well, I absolutely love Fruits Basket -- the manga is my all-time favorite -- but I must confess I don't really get the point of a Fruits Basket sequel, especially with how it ended.(The curse on the Sohma family was broken, and it was strongly implied that it would never come back.) The article even says that none of the original characters will show up in the story -- it's focused on a new girl who attends Tohru's high school after she graduates -- so...yeah. It's a weird decision. If the mangaka wanted to do more FB manga, I think a collection of side stories would have worked better. There are a lot of things I wished I knew more about, like the Mabudachi Trio's high school days, Hatori and Mayu's relationship, Ayame and Mine's relationship, poor Ritsu who only showed up in a handful of chapters...

But all of this just reminds me -- somebody needs to remake the Fruits Basket anime now that the original manga is over! Come on, they've done Sailor Moon Crystal and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, so why not Fruits Basket?

Inspired by The Mike Toole Show column at Anime News Network, I thought it would be fun to make my own "Anime Alphabet", listing the titles of my favorite series I've watched for each letter of the alphabet. Feel free to make your own list if you'd like!

A Aria
B Black Butler (I briefly considered going with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon instead, but since I had a few B English titles to choose from, it seemed unfair to go with a Japanese title for this letter.)
C Card Captor Sakura
D Death Note
E Evangelion
F Fruits Basket
G Ghost Hunt (I debated about putting Ginban Kaleidoscope here instead, but I decided to stick with licensed series.)
H Hare + Guu
I I My Me! Strawberry Eggs
J Jigoku Shoujo (a.k.a Hell Girl -- I had to cheat a little with this one and use the Japanese title to find one that started with a J.)
K Kaleido Star
L Le Chevalier D'eon
M Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
N NANA
O Ouran High School Host Club
P Princess Nine
Q ... Yeah, I've got nothing. If I included manga, I could use Queen of Ragtonia... Oh, apparently when you translate the Japanese title of Excel Saga (Heppoko Jikken Animation Excel Saga), you get Quack Experimental Animation Excel Saga, so that'll work for Q in a convoluted way!
R Rah-Xephon
S Super GALS
T Tiger & Bunny
U Ultramaniac
V Vampire Knight
W Witch Hunter Robin
X X (as in the CLAMP series)
Y Yamada's First Time (but I also considered Yona of the Dawn, only excluding it because it's not complete at this moment)
Z Zero no Tsukaima (a.k.a Familiar of Zero -- Again, as with J, I had to look at the Japanese titles to find one that started with Z.)
