Welcome to 2020! I meant to make a post before the end of the year, doing my usual year-end fanfiction reviews and making a list of my top fifty favorite anime of the past decade, but, oops, I forgot! Well, better late than never, right?

50. Golden Time (2013)

Honorable mentions go to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Kimi ni Todoke - From Me To You, Natsume's Book of Friends, and Kobato. I only counted series that started between 2010-2019, so these didn't make the cut, despite airing partly between those years.

Now, fanfiction reviews! I answered three different year-end review questionnaires on my Tumblr, so I'm just going to link to them instead of copy and pasting. This entry is already getting long enough!

Set One
Set Two
Set Three

My review of the fall anime season and my choices for the Top Ten Anime of 2019 will be posted sometime in the next few days...hopefully.

I was going to resurrect the "year in review" meme I used to do years ago, but I came across this one on Tumblr, which has more interesting questions.

1. List of fics completed this year:

Sailor Moon
High School Memory (Spirit of Fire side story)
The Longest Night (Spirit of Fire side story)

Fruits Basket
The Next Step

And though the question asks for completed fics, I’m going to add my WIPs: Friends With Benefits (Kaleido Star), Metamorphosis (Sailor Moon), Stolen Dreams (Sailor Moon).

2. Number of words written: Just counting the completed stories…about 9,700, but that’s kind of cheating because I wrote half of The Next Step years ago.

3. Your most popular fic: That I’ve written this year? None of them were popular. Or rather, they were equally unpopular with just one or two reviews.

4. Your personal fav: Can I pick from my WIPs? Because I really love what I’ve written of Metamorphosis so far. But from the completed fics, probably High School Memory?

5. Your fav scene: Again, my favorite scenes are from my WIPs, but if I had to choose from the completed stories, I would probably pick either the discussion between Saburo and Keitaro at the hospital in The Longest Night or Hiro freaking out over Hatsuharu’s “gift” in The Next Step.

6. A fic or scene that challenged you: The last scene of The Longest Night. I’m still not entirely happy with it, but writing argumentative scenes is not really my strong suit… Honestly, part of the reason I originally skipped this part in Spirit of Fire was because I didn’t want to write the scene where Saburo disowns Takara!

7. A line of writing you’re proud of: I wouldn’t necessarily say I'm proud of this line, but it just really amuses me because Keitaro rarely gets the chance to be snarky. I’m going to post a few lines to give it some context with the line in question bolded.

Excerpt from "High School Memory" )

Now, this part from “The Longest Night” would probably be my choice for the writing I’m most proud of from this year’s completed stories. I just really like the image of the cup floating in front of Keitaro’s face because he can’t really see well without his glasses.

Excerpt from "The Longest Night" )

And, as a bonus, here’s an excerpt from Metamorphosis that I really like:

Excerpt from "Metamorphosis )

8. A comment that touched you: Like I mentioned before, I haven’t received many reviews for my new stories, but BlueLion and The Time Traveler have been long time fans of my stories, so I was really happy to see their reviews!

9. Something that inspired your writing: I can’t think of anything in particular that inspired the actual stories, but I credit @floraone’s stories for reminding me how good fanfiction can be and inspiring me to start writing again.

10. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc): Honestly, the fact that I’m just writing again is my proudest accomplishment! I was really burned out when I decided to quit a couple of years ago and didn’t think I would ever write again, so I’m really happy I feel inspired again, even if sometimes it feels like I’ve lost all my talent…

And, what the heck, let's just do the other meme, too!

Since this post is getting too long... )

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
First off, a reminder that those Petit Chara Sailor Moon and Mercury figures are still available for sale, although if I don't get any takers here by the end of the month, I'm thinking about putting them up for sale on eBay. I should also point out that the two extra Moons I have for sale are actually slightly different than the put-together one that I'm keeping in that the ones for sale have both their eyes opened (like the pic on the box). Same for Mercury: one is the same as the put-together one I'm keeping, but the other has both her eyes closed, with blush stickers on her cheeks.

Now, onto this 30 Day Anime Challenge I found on Tumblr, which is a little different than the one I did previous. Gonna do it all at once, though, just 'cause.

Meme! )

Just came across this writing meme from [livejournal.com profile] sophiap that looks like fun, so I'll give it a whirl. Maybe it'll actually get me excited about my writing again. (Really, really, really need to get the next chapter of Melting Ice posted, but, ugh, I just can't get over this block I'm in with that story.)

Anyway, comment to this entry with the letter of a question you want me to answer. (Try to limit it to about three at a time. You can ask for more after I answer your first letters.)

Long time, no see! One of these days, I'm gonna have to do a nephew-spam, because, seriously, CUTEST. BABY. EVER, but for now, here's an anime meme I came across on Tumblr.

2012: A Year in Review )

In other news, guess who managed to find a decently-priced Man of Many Faces Vol. 2 on the Amazon Marketplace? I did! Usually they're ridiculously expensive, so I was going to exclude the series from my "collect all CLAMP series" goal, but it seems like the prices are finally going down. I got both volumes for about $20. *dances* Now I'm on the hunt for a cheap Kobato. Vol. 5, which seems to be out of print already. (Strange for a relatively new CLAMP series.) Amazon seems to still be selling them for retail price, but they don't have any currently in stock, and I'm not confident they'll ever get anymore in because the cheapest one I found on the Marketplace was for $97! Nobody would sell it for that much if it was still easy to find retail.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Almost finished with this!

27. A manga/an anime you would never buy

One that I had already watched and decided I didn't want, obviously. :P I don't blind-buy much when it comes to anime. I rent from Netflix first, then decide if it's worth buying. That means it has to earn at least a seven (preferably an eight) rating on My Anime List. Anything rated six or below, I have no interest in rewatching. (The few I do own with a lower rating were blind buys, usually purchased just because they were ridiculously cheap and I didn't care if they sucked.) So, yeah, you can just check that link to see which series I would never buy.

Manga is different, since I do mostly blind buy. (I only read scanlations for series that aren't licensed.) However, I can say without a doubt that I will never buy anything like Bleach, One Piece, or Naruto. They're just way too long!

28. A manga you think is so brilliant it’s like literature

Hmm, well, I don't know if I would go so far as to it's "so brilliant, it's like literature," but I happen to think Fruits Basket is pretty brilliant for a manga. That's close enough, right?

In other news, I don't think I'm going to reach my goal of completing Melting Ice by the end of the year, but I am currently about three chapters ahead, which is pretty good. It's also about to pass the one-hundred review mark over at FF.net, thanks to two enthusiastic readers who decided to review every posted chapter so far. ^_^ Rather exciting. It'll be my third story to do so, but my first non-SM work to reach that milestone, so I'm happy about that.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
25. The best manga oneshot/anime movie

If by one-shot, the question refers to a short story, then my favorite would probably be "Casablanca Memories", a Sailor Moon side story focusing on Rei, which explores the reason why she distrusts men. If it means a one-volume manga, though, then I would have to say Angel's Coffin by You Higuri is the best I've read. It's so wonderfully tragic!

Anime movie? My favorite is Sailor Moon R, with End of Evangelion and Kiki's Delivery Service really close behind.

26. The last manga you read/anime you watched

Manga - I've just started yet another reread of Fruits Basket -- seriously, never get tired of it! -- but the last two series I completed were Doubt!! and Othello.

Anime - Currently in the middle of watching Magical Shopping Arcade Abenoboshi, but I also watched The Secret World of Arriety last week. I recently rented Princess Resurrection and Licensed by Royalty from Netflix as well.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Chapter 19 of Melting Ice has been posted at the usual places. I've also begun posting Against The Rules over at AO3. For some reason, I completely forgot about it when I posted the rest of my stories there!

Another double dose of meme questions:

23. Best manga/anime villain

He may be the protagonist of his series, but I gotta say the best manga and anime villain in my opinion is Light Yagami from Death Note. He utterly fascinates me with his belief that he is on the side of justice, despite the fact that he becomes one of the most prolific serial killers in history. That dichotomy within him makes him an interesting character to observe and puts him a cut above most other villains, who tend to be evil just because. Plus, he's definitely smarter than the majority of anime/manga villains out there!

24. The best long manga/anime series

Manga - Easy, a tie between Fruits Basket and NANA. (Criteria: Over twenty volumes.)

Anime - Kaleido Star, of course! Honorable mentions go to Super GALS, Card Captor Sakura, Fushigi Yuugi, Sailor Moon, Fullmetal Alchemist (both series), and Code Geass. (Criteria: Over fifty episodes.)

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Ugh, my thoat is sore. I think I caught Dad's cold. Wonderful.

Anyway, long time, no update, so here's another meme two-fer.

21. A manga/an anime that deserves more recognition

Kaleido Star, Kaleido Star, Kaleido Star!

For manga, I think mangaka Chika Shiomi deserves more recognition in general because I love her supernatual romances. My favorite title of hers is Rasetsu, and it's really, really good. Highly recommended.

22. A manga/an anime you wish didn't exist

That seems rather harsh. Even if I don't like a title, somebody out there probably does, so who am I to take that away from them?

That being said, I wouldn't be sad if Di Gi Charat suddenly disappeared off the face of the Earth...

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
First off, Politically Incorrect is posted at dotmoon and FF.net. (I'll post it AO3 either later today or tomorrow; I didn't have time yesterday.). Decided just to post the whole thing as a long one-shot, since it really wasn't set up to be a chaptered story. If you read it before, I made a few really minor changes, but also added a One Year Later scene at the end that you may want to check out.

The reason why I didn't have time to post it at AO3 is because yesterday Mom and I went to the movies -- we saw Hope Springs, which was pretty good -- then did a little shopping. Of course, that meant manga for me! At Barnes & Noble, I picked up Sailor Moon Vol. 7, Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden Vol. 10 (finally, a new volume!), and the first 3-in-1 omnbus edition of Skip-Beat, which I've always wanted to read but thought was too long. Actually, I still think it's too long, but you know me, I'm always a sucker for an omnibus... *laughs* We also went to Half-Price Books. For once, though, they didn't have anything I was interested in, so I decided to satisfy my craving for bargain-hunting out-of-print manga on the Amazon Marketplace. I ordered Vols. 4 & 7 of Othello, Vol. 6 of Doubt! (all three missing volumes from series I bought previously at HPB), and Clannad: After Story Collection 2. (You may remember that I got the rest of the series for ridiculously cheap during Right Stuf's holiday sale last year.) Also bought some newer manga: Arata: The Legend Vol. 9, Kimi ni Todoke Vols. 8 and 9, and Kobato. Vols. 2-4.

So, yeah, I'm going to be in manga heaven for the next couple of weeks. ^_^

I'm getting really bad about doing my meme questions, so today will be another two-for-one. They're related anyway.

19. A manga/an anime that you disliked at first but came to enjoy later on

Hmm, this is a tough question. I guess I would have to say the manga series Phantom Dream did get a lot better later in the series. I didn't really care for it at all in the beginning. As for anime.... Maybe Gundam Wing? It was a bit of a struggle to get through the first half, but past the recap, I enjoyed it more, although I never really came to love it. It's a pretty average series.

20. A manga/an anime you started out enjoying but ended up not liking as much

Ah, this question is much easier to answer! I've already mentioned Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic in reply to a similar question from this meme, but for anime, it's gotta be Kare Kano. It was so, so good until the last couple of episodes! Unfortunately, the ending is so terrible that it's tainted the rest of the series for me.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Gah, I really did mean to update late last week, but I kept forgetting. Oh, well. For those who are interested, Chapters 6 and 7 of No Longer Alone have been posted at the usual places, completing the story. I'm planning to post it over at [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

Now, onto today's meme questions. Yes, plural. These next two questions aren't very interesting IMO, so I'm going to post both at once.

17. A manga/an anime that you feel embarrassed about liking

None. Maybe some I'm embarrassed about watching/reading, but not liking.

18. Favorite BL/yuri couple

Not really my thing, but if I had to choose... Kurogane/Fai from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Haruka/Michiru from Sailor Moon, I guess.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

16. A manga/an anime that isn't licensed but SHOULD be.

Oh, now here's an easy question: Ginban Kaleidoscope! I want this anime to be licensed so, so much, but I doubt it'll ever happen. It's kinda old (from around 2005 or 2006, I think), and it's a sports (figure skating) anime, which doesn't seem to do very well over here for some reason. Then again, I never thought the second season of Someday's Dreamers would ever make it here either, yet somehow it finally got picked up (thank you, Sentai Filmworks!), so maybe I shouldn't abandon all hope for GK. (Oh, that reminds me that the second season of Story of Saiunkoku would also be a nice licensing pick as well.)

As for manga, my top choice would probably be Naoko Takeuchi's The Cherry Project, which also happens to be about a figure skater. Hey, Codename: Sailor V and the reprint of Sailor Moon are both big hits, so why not license another one of Takeuchi's titles, even if it is old and features a sport? Second choice goes to Kagen no Tsuki by Ai Yazawa of NANA and Paradise Kiss fame. I still don't understand why it hasn't been licensed, especially since the live-action movie based on it was. It's only three volumes long and by a fairly popular mangaka, so it doesn't seem like much of a risk to me. My third pick is either Appare Jipangu or Epotoransu! Mai, both by my favorite mangaka Yuu Watase. The majority of her series have made it over here, but not these two. Again, they're both short -- three and two volumes, respectively -- and by a popular artist, so why not, Viz?  (Okay, Epotoransu! Mai isn't all that great, admittedly, but one of the male love interests is a Sailor Moon otaku, and that's cool. :P And it's still pretty decent, just not as amazing as some of her other series.)

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Man, lately I only seem to remember to update this thing whenever I have a new writing update to announce! (Gotta work on that.)

Anyway, Chapter Five of No Longer Alone has been posted at the usual places. Just two more chapters after this, then I'll probably start posting Politically Incorrect with the proper, real ending that I wasn't able to complete before the deadline. I can't decide if I should post it in chapters or as a one-shot, though. Thirteen thousand words is long, but it isn't that long; I have three longer one-shots posted. Thoughts from those who have already read what I posted in this journal? Do you think it would work best as a one-shot?

Onto today's question!

15. The saddest scene

I don't like these questions that make you pick the -est of something; they're too hard! But the two that immediately came to mind for me were both Sailor Moon scenes. From the anime, the death of Neptune and Uranus near the end of Sailor Stars (with Nephrite's death coming in at a really close second), and from the manga, Pluto's death scene during the Black Moon arc.

There are some others I could mention, but I don't think I will because they would probably be considered major spoilers for various series. (I don't mind talking about those SM scenes, since most of you reading this are already familiar with the series, and they're hardly considered spoilers any more, anyway.) I will mention, however, that one of them involves a character featured in the icon I'm using for this entry. If you're a Fushigi Yugi fan, you know exactly what scene I'm talking about. *sobs*

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Oops, I kinda forgot about this thing. Well, before getting to today's question, just want to note that the fourth chapter of No Longer Alone has been posted at the usual places.

Now, the meme.

14. A manga/an anime that makes you cry.

Oh, man, there are tons of series that make me cry, but I'll only pick one for each.

For anime, I'm going to say Pretear, because it's the strength of its tear-jerking finale that I consider it one of my all-time faves. I'm pretty much a sobbing mess whenever I finish watching it. Sobbing. Mess.

Manga... Well, manga doesn't tend to make me cry nearly as much as anime does, but I want to mention Rasetsu, which is a title that isn't very popular but I love. It has one of my favorite manga endings -- very bittersweet, and, oh, so cry-worthy.

Days To Come )

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

12. A manga/an anime you used to love but don't anymore

You know, I can't really think of any. My affection tends to remain pretty steadfast. If I love something, I'll likely always love it. Maybe not as much, but not enough to say I don't love it anymore.

Maybe you could count Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic? They were never my favorites, but I liked them quite a bit until certain spoilers (Acid Tokyo for TRC and the exit of my two favorite characters from xxxHolic). After those points, I didn't like them as much. I still like both series overall, though.

Days To Come )

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

How did I get sucked into watching the Summer Olympics? I was only going to watch the opening ceremony. I don't care about the summer events; I prefer the winter events. Well, okay, there was a brief time when I was younger when I had a mild interest in gymnastics, but it didn't stick for very long. I haven't watched a competition in years. Yet here I am, glued to the TV set every night to watch gymnastics and swimming! I'm blaming my brother-in-law. :P When we visited last weekend, practically all we did was watch the Olympics since my sister was so busy with her schoolwork.

Oh, well.

I'll get back to the 30 Day meme tomorrow, but for today, I'm taking a break to do another meme that I snagged from s[livejournal.com profile] samuraiter

Fanfiction Meme )
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

10. A manga/anime that makes you fluffy and happy when you read/watch it

All the way through? I can think of plenty of series that have a lot of happy, fluffy episodes (Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Ultramaniac, and A Little Snow Fairy Sugar immediately come to mind), but they have their more drama-filled episodes as well. Hmm, maybe Aria? It's been a while since I watched it, though, so I can't really remember. Either that, or Azumanga Daioh. Those two are probably the closest to being pure fluffy happiness.

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

09. A manga/an anime you'd like to see more of

I just finished a rewatch of one of my favorite anime, Princess Nine, and I'm still disappointed that it didn't get more seasons. I want to see the Kisaragi Girls go to Koshien and win! As much as I love the series, the end was kind of disappointing.

I don't mind so much that they lost -- it would have been really unrealistic if they managed to get to Koshien during their first year playing -- but I hated how they lost. If only Ryo and Izumi weren't so preoccupied with their romantic woes, they probably would have had a decent shot at winning the regional semifinals. (I'll give Koharu a pass, since her worries about her father's health were more serious). It annoyed me that they lost because of something like that, and not because they simply were up against a better team.

Another series I would love to see more of is the Fruits Basket anime, another one of my favorites. Granted, they would probably have to do another FMA-like reboot, since some things they added in the anime contradict later revelations in the manga, but it would be awesome to see the entire series animated, especially the last two Zodiac members. (Rin is one of my favorites!)

As for manga, it would be wonderful to see Ai Yazawa finally recover from her mystery illness and complete NANA. (And maybe even see a continuation of the anime?) Also, I recently learned that the Story of Saiunkoku manga is only nine volumes long, meaning that it'll probably end at the same point as the first season of the anime. One of the reasons I started reading the manga is because I wanted to know more of the story past that point, so it's disappointing that it ended so soon. (The second season was never licensed, and the original light novels go on even further.) I'd like to see all of the light novels adapted into manga form.

Quick note: Chapter 2 of No Longer Alone is posted at the usual places.

08. The most annoying character

Hmm... I strangely like a lot of characters that other people find annoying, so this is hard to answer. However, I do vaguely remember one character that drove me crazy, although her name escapes me at the moment. I think she was from Ai Yori Aoshi? *goes to check Wikipedia* Yes, Mayu Miyuki! What I remember of her, she took the term "spoiled brat" to a whole nother level.
