Time for the Winter Anime Review! Although, before I do that, I forgot to put my usual look back on the fanfiction I've written in the previous year in my year-end post, so here are the links to those on my Tumblr if anybody's interested:

And I did something new and wrote individual posts on each of last year's fics. You can find all the tagged posts here

Now, onto the anime reviews!

Buddy Daddies - I've said it before, but I have such a weakness for series about unexpected men needing to take care of a small child, and this show has TWO! Definitely my favorite of the season. I just loved watching the two of them learn how to care and eventually love Miri, and while I don't necessarily ship them in a romantic sense, I do adore the idea of Kazuki and Rei being queerplatonic partners (especially since I get major aroace vibes off Rei). My one real gripe about the show is that I just don't buy Kazuki as a hitman. Rei, it makes sense. He was literally born into the business, trained to be an assassin since he was a child, but beyond a throwaway line about him turning out the way he did because his parents abadoned him as a child, it's never really explained why Kazuki decided to become a hitman. (Spoilers for Spy X FamilySpoilers )) He's much more suited to being a stay-at-home father or a chef (Spoilers )) than a killer, and while it is acknowledged that Kazuki isn't that great at being a hitman, that still doesn't explain how and why he is one other than that's the premise of the show. (Honestly, I could have lived without the whole hitman angle altogether. It makes the show sound too much of a ripoff of Spy X Family, and I was much more interested in their every day lives than their jobs.)

Trigun Stampede - The original Trigun was one of my favorite shows when I first started watching anime, but it's probably been at least 15, maybe even 20 years since I last watched it, so I was able to come into Stampede with pretty fresh eyes. First off, the CG animation is absolutely stunning. It's probably one of the best looking anime I've seen, period. I also thought Knives was a much more interesting and complex character than he was in the original and was given a much better reason for wanting to kill all the humans. And the twist? Well, I won't say anything more about that... So which series do I like better? I'd say the characters are more endearing in the original, and I really enjoyed the mix of comedy and drama, but the new series has a tighter, more gripping plot that touches on some really fascinating questions. They're both great in different ways, and I'd recommend both! (And for those who were reluctant to check out the new series because of no Milly, again, I don't want to spoil anything...but I'm looking forward to the next season!)

Delicious Party Pretty Cure/Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure - I found the ending of Delicious Party to be rather lackluster, to be honest, but Soaring Sky is off to a really strong start! Like with the last series, they're taking their time adding Pretty Cures to the story, with the third just making his debut in the ninth episode -- and, yes, that "he" isn't a typo. For the first time, a boy is going to be one of the main Cures! (I believe there have been male Cures in previous seasons I haven't seen, but it seems they only had small roles.) The fourth Cure is also going to be another first for the series, an adult (albeit only an 18-year-old)! We've already met her "civilian" identity, and she seems like she'll be a fun addition to the group whenever she awakens. Then there's Sora and Mashiro, the first two Cures, who already have a super close friendship that I actually wouldn't be all that surprised turned romantic based on all the subtext between them. Now, would they really dare go that far with a Pretty Cure series? I don't know, but, again, their chemistry is so strong that anything seems possible...

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady - Mmm, I have conflicted feelings about this one, despite it getting a lot of high praise in ANN's season wrap up. The animation is beautiful, Anisphia and Euphyllia are interesting characters, and their (absolutely unambiguous) romance is great, but I found the plot and world building fairly weak. Despite Anisphia being the "Reincarnated Princess" referred to in the title, the fact that she used to live in the "real" world is mentioned only, like, three-ish times? We learn absolutely nothing about her previous life other than that she always wanted to fly, and you can be forgiven for forgetting this is technically an "isekai" series due to how little her reincarnation affects the plot. Take that aspect out of it, and very little would change. Also, there's a lot of talk about the kingdom needing to change, but it's never really shown why? There definitely were some corrupt nobles, but with what little screentime is given to the commoners, none of them seem particularly unhappy or displeased with how the country is run, so it was hard to really care about the political stuff. (Really, it comes across more like the only reason why the change is needed is because neither Anisphia or her brother Algard want to be queen/king...) I think it really would have helped if Anis and Euphie interacted with more commoners besides their maid, Ilia. (And I guess Lanie kinda counts?) Still a really good show that I enjoyed, but I wouldn't call it a great one.

My Hero Academia - Well, that was depressing...and I don't mean that it a bad way. After all, it's hard to be hopeful after all the big losses from last cour. Poor Deku really goes through it, forcing himself to leave the school and fight mostly on his own in order to protect his friends, but I'm glad the class managed to Spoilers ).

BOFURI - This is just such a fun, relaxing series, even with all the battles. If that seems like a contradiction...well, it kinda is, but seriously, after all the "stuck in a video game" series with dire, real-world consequences, it's just nice to watch a bunch of people simply having fun playing a VR game where nothing's really at stake besides winning events. I do wish they showed a little more "real-world" stuff like the first season did -- as with Magical Revolution, you could almost forget they are just playing a video game -- but that's my only real complaint...well, other than all the delays. They delayed an episode one week in the middle of the season, and now the last two episodes have been delayed, too. I'm not sure if the delays were production problems or COVID-related, but definitely a bit disappointing.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl - I was really expecting to love this show. "Friends-to-lovers" is one of my favorite tropes, so Tomo-chan should have been a slamdunk...except I shipped Tomo more with her upperclassman from Karate Club, Misaki, than her actual best-friend-turned-love-interest, Jun. I don't know... Maybe it was the fact that Tomo and Jun tend to hit each other a lot that tended to turned me off? It's not exactly abusive (and I believe they intended the violence to be seen as comedic), since they're both in the Karate Club and they're pretty evenly matched, but it was a strange dynamic that didn't really work for me. Also, I got tired of Tomo trying to force herself to be more girly so that Jun would see her as a love interest pretty quickly, especially since it's clear from the start of the series that Spoilers ). I did really enjoy Tomo's friendship with Misuzu and Carol, though, and I have to admit, there were some pretty hilarious moments. Jun even managed to win me over a bit by the end...but I still would have preferred her with Misaki.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun -- The Harvest Fest arc really did take up way too much time, but at least it ended with a pretty good conclusion. These last two cours really have been the weakest of the series, unfortunately. Next up, assuming it gets another season (which I'm almost certain it will), seems to be another festival, but this one is going to be centered on music, which I think will be a lot of fun!

Bungo Stray Dogs - I wish there weren't such long breaks between seasons of this series. (The last season before this aired in 2019, although there was the series of non-canonical Wan! shorts in 2021.) With so many characters and factions, it can be difficult to remember who everybody is, what faction they belong to, and what their Gifted power is. That being said, I did really love that this season started with a mini-arc devoted to Ranpo's backstory, since he's one of my favorite characters. It was also a bit heartbreaking to learn about Yosano's backstory, too. And, hey, the next cour is set to begin this summer, so not a long wait this time!

To Your Eternity - A third season has already been announced, although I'm not really sure where it will go when I felt the end of this cour wrapped things up really well. (Based on the brief flashforward we saw at the very end, Spoilers ), which could be...interesting.) Anyway, this series never really got back to greatness of its first few arcs, but I still enjoyed this cour, even though I felt like Fushi Spoilers ) kinda cheapened the earlier, heart-breaking deaths.

IDOLiSH7 - Only three episodes aired to end the last cour -- still not sure why; I assume COVID-related -- so not much to talk about other than I really hate Ryo and think his reasons for doing such awful things is one of the stupidest motives I've ever heard for a villain. (Basically, Spoilers ) Yes, that's seriously why he decided he hated all idols and wants to destroy them, no matter the cost.) Next season (if there is one) seems like it will focus on Nagi, my second favorite (after Yamato) member of IDOLiSH7, so hopefully that will be fun, but I'm not looking forward to Ryo sticking around...

As for next season, it's once again sequel-heavy. In additon to continuing with the new Pretty Cure, I'll be checking out the second seasons of MIX, The Ancient Magus' Bride, TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You, and Birdie Wing -Golf Girls' Story- (which I actually just finished catching up with, so great timing). There's also Dr. Stone: New World, but since I assume Toonami will get that, I'll just wait to watch it on there. When it comes to new series, I'm most interested in Skip and Loafer, Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion, and A Galaxy Next Door, but might also check out Yuri Is My Job!, Ao no Orchestra, and My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, depending on early reviews and which shows Crunchyroll actually gets.

Did my usual look back at the fanfiction I wrote last year over on Tumblr!

2021 Fanfic Year In Review

2021 Fanfic End of the Year Asks

It's also time for the usual seasonal anime review, as well as the reveal of my top ten favorite series of the year!

The aquatope of white sand - Last season, I said this had the potential to be one of my favorite series this year, and I happy to say...it is! Kinda annoyed that the "visions" from the first half of the series never really went anywhere, but that's my only real complaint. Otherwise, the characters are great, the animation is gorgeous, and it's just a really, really good show!
Restaurant To Another World 2 - I don't know if this series really needed a sequel, especially several years after the first season originally aired, but I'm glad it got one anyway! I liked that this season brought back a lot of customers from the previous season, and of course, the food porn was incredible! Especially since a lot of the food highlighted this time were some of my personal favorites. I was always excited when it came to watch a new episode, to the point that I actually considered it one of my favorites of the year, as you'll see below!

The Night Beyond The Tricornered Window - I will say that this got off to bit of a rocky start, especially with how Hiyakawa was so possessive and controlling of Mikado (which is a BL trope I hate) but it got a lot better once the story started focusing on the main mystery. It helps that Hiyakawa was given an understandable backstory for why he acted that way and that the story never really portrayed their relationship as healthy or sexy, with several other characters calling out Hiyakawa's problematic behavior. Actually, for a story that's supposed to be BL, I have to say it kinda sucks as one, with a main couple who honestly don't have any real chemistry, but as a paranormal mystery, it's great!
Tropical-Rouge Precure - After complaining that Sango, Asuka, and Minori were being ignored in favor of Laura and Manatsu, this cour delivered by giving the other three Precures a couple of focus episodes each. It would have been nice for them to have been more spread out through the series, admittedly, but as much as I love Laura, it was kinda nice to have a break from the "Laura and Manatsu Show".
SAKUGAN - I'm not really sure how I feel about this mecha series, to be honest! It got off to an amazing start, and there are moments of that initial brilliance in later episodes, but there are also quite a few low moments. Overall, I really liked it, but I also thought it could have been even better.
takt op.Destiny - I feel the same about this series as I do about SAKUGAN. There were points I really, really liked, and I loved the character designs, especially for the Musicarts, but the villains were pretty weak and uninteresting, and the stuff with Anna near the end was just...weird.
Platinum End - Though I had heard some less than positive things about the manga this series is based off, I still wanted to give it a chance because I absolutely love Death Note and Bakuman, created by the same writer and mangaka. The verdict? Yeah, it's pretty bad. The main character, Mirai, is the complete opposite of Death Note's Light in that he's 100% opposed to killing in any situation, even self-defense, which is fine, but he also lacks Light's intelligence or charisma, making for a dull lead. The main villain, Metropolitan, is slighlty more interesting, but he's no L either. Honestly, the best character by far is Mukaido. It's too bad he's not the main character, because I think he has the most interesting story to tell. Also, there are a couple of sex scenes featuring minor characters that are purely there for shock value that I found rather off-putting. That being said, this first cour ended with one heck of a cliff-hanger, so of course I'll be sticking around for the second cour to see if things can get any worse. *laughs*

For the upcoming Winter season, I plan to keep watching Platinum End (assuming it resumes right away; details about the start of the second season haven't been given yet, but there was a title card for the thirteenth episode at the end of the last one) and Tropical-Rouge Precure. I'm also catching up with the first season of The Case Study of Vanitas (which Crunchyroll unexpectedly picked up a couple of weeks ago despite being originally a Funimation title) so I can watch the second season (assuming Crunchyroll also gets it from the start this time). For new shows, I'm hoping Crunchyroll also gets Requiem of the Rose King and Sasaki and Miyano, but those are the only two that have really caught my eye so far based on summaries.

And as for my Top 10 Favorite Series of 2021...

*drumroll*

1. Fruits Basket
2. The aquatope on white sand
3. Zombie Land Saga Revenge
4. Sk8 the Infinity *
5. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X
6. Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!
7. Laid-Back Camp Season 2 *
8. oddtaxi *
9.Heaven's Design Team
10. Restaurant To Another World

(* means I didn't watch it simulcast, but picked up later)

And new category! My Anime Movie of the Year was... the Sailor Moon Eternal movies, of course! I don't think I ever got around to gushing about them here, but while the first film admittedly had some pacing issues, the second one was amazing and was about all I ever wanted as an animated version of my favorite manga arc.

Now, fanfiction reviews! I answered three different year-end review questionnaires on my Tumblr, so I'm just going to link to them instead of copy and pasting. This entry is already getting long enough!

Set One
Set Two
Set Three

My review of the fall anime season and my choices for the Top Ten Anime of 2019 will be posted sometime in the next few days...hopefully.

I participated in an UsaMamo Fanwork Exchange over on Tumblr, and here's what I wrote for my giftee:

To Build A Home (AO3)

For once, I'm actually pretty pleased with how this turned out? My giftee absolutely loved it, so I'm happy!

(And I finally got a review for The Aftermath of Heartbreak, so now I don't feel like a total no-talent hack...)
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Nobody reminded me not to post any more WIPs, so, oops, I went ahead and did it.

Friends With Benefits (Also at AO3)

I'm hoping to stick with a one-chapter-per-month posting schedule, which I think is doable without stressing me out too much. The chapters aren't very long, and I've already got next month's chapter ready to go for the most part. Chapter Three still needs a little work, but two months should be plenty of time to finish it up.

I just hope there are some Kaleido Star fans still around to read it. "Melting Ice", which I finished posting way back in May 2016, is still on the first page of the Kaleido Star section of FF.net when you filter for all English fics. That's...not a ton of activity. On the plus side, lots of visibility! So, fingers crossed?

Oh, by the way, I don't think I've ever mentioned it over here, but I do have a Tumblr. Mostly I use it to reblog fanart and figure skating stuff, but lately I've been trying to be more active in actually producing posts, especially now that I'm writing again. Feel free to follow if you want!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
...that I promised myself not to post anymore works-in-progress. I'm, like, thisclose to posting the first chapter of Friends With Benefits. I mean, I am ALMOST finished. I have a rough draft pretty much done. It's still really, really rough in places, but it's not like it's going to take years for me to finish like Melting Ice. The end goal is in sight.

And I could really use some encouragement at the moment... I try not to place too much importance on reviews, but I confess it bothers me more than I want to admit that I haven't received a single review yet for The Aftermath of Heartbreak. I know it features a rare het pairing in a fandom dominated by same sex couples, so I wasn't expecting it to get much attention, but not even one review? (Well, it did get three kudos on AO3, which is nice, but still...) Even my random Sailor Moon/Super GALS crossover has one review. It's just kind of discouraging when nothing I've written since my return seems to have gotten much notice. *sigh* Maybe I did lose all my writing talent after taking such a long break.

Gah, sorry for being so moody. Just fighting the writer's blues...
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Hey, we actually got snow last night! Just a light dusting, but better than no snow at all.

Speaking of unexpected happenings, I have a new fic to share! In a new fandom, even! Yeah, I know, i know, I'm supposed to be working on Friends With Benefits, but I've been reading a lot of Yuri!! on Ice fanfics lately, and, well, I got inspired.

The Aftermath of Heartbreak (also at AO3)

I can't decide if I'm satisfied with the way it turned out or not, but it was pretty fun to write! And Mila/Georgi is a rare pair that needs more love, IMO.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I was going to resurrect the "year in review" meme I used to do years ago, but I came across this one on Tumblr, which has more interesting questions.

1. List of fics completed this year:

Sailor Moon
High School Memory (Spirit of Fire side story)
The Longest Night (Spirit of Fire side story)

Fruits Basket
The Next Step

And though the question asks for completed fics, I’m going to add my WIPs: Friends With Benefits (Kaleido Star), Metamorphosis (Sailor Moon), Stolen Dreams (Sailor Moon).

2. Number of words written: Just counting the completed stories…about 9,700, but that’s kind of cheating because I wrote half of The Next Step years ago.

3. Your most popular fic: That I’ve written this year? None of them were popular. Or rather, they were equally unpopular with just one or two reviews.

4. Your personal fav: Can I pick from my WIPs? Because I really love what I’ve written of Metamorphosis so far. But from the completed fics, probably High School Memory?

5. Your fav scene: Again, my favorite scenes are from my WIPs, but if I had to choose from the completed stories, I would probably pick either the discussion between Saburo and Keitaro at the hospital in The Longest Night or Hiro freaking out over Hatsuharu’s “gift” in The Next Step.

6. A fic or scene that challenged you: The last scene of The Longest Night. I’m still not entirely happy with it, but writing argumentative scenes is not really my strong suit… Honestly, part of the reason I originally skipped this part in Spirit of Fire was because I didn’t want to write the scene where Saburo disowns Takara!

7. A line of writing you’re proud of: I wouldn’t necessarily say I'm proud of this line, but it just really amuses me because Keitaro rarely gets the chance to be snarky. I’m going to post a few lines to give it some context with the line in question bolded.

Excerpt from "High School Memory" )

Now, this part from “The Longest Night” would probably be my choice for the writing I’m most proud of from this year’s completed stories. I just really like the image of the cup floating in front of Keitaro’s face because he can’t really see well without his glasses.

Excerpt from "The Longest Night" )

And, as a bonus, here’s an excerpt from Metamorphosis that I really like:

Excerpt from "Metamorphosis )

8. A comment that touched you: Like I mentioned before, I haven’t received many reviews for my new stories, but BlueLion and The Time Traveler have been long time fans of my stories, so I was really happy to see their reviews!

9. Something that inspired your writing: I can’t think of anything in particular that inspired the actual stories, but I credit @floraone’s stories for reminding me how good fanfiction can be and inspiring me to start writing again.

10. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc): Honestly, the fact that I’m just writing again is my proudest accomplishment! I was really burned out when I decided to quit a couple of years ago and didn’t think I would ever write again, so I’m really happy I feel inspired again, even if sometimes it feels like I’ve lost all my talent…

And, what the heck, let's just do the other meme, too!

Since this post is getting too long... )

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I mentioned in my last entry that I had completed yet another new story, and now it is time for the reveal...

The Next Step (also found at AO3)

Yes, it's a Fruits Basket fic! The recent announcement about the upcoming anime reboot inspired me to resurrect a story I started a few years ago for my claim at [livejournal.com profile] 15pairings. Honestly, I'm not sure why I never finished it in the first place. Once I started writing, it only took me a couple of days to finish. Trying to decide on a title took longer. Seriously. (And I'm still not totally happy with what I chose...) I guess I didn't know how to end it? If I had an ending in mind when I first started writing it, I long forgot it. Anyway, the community is dead, but who knows? I might just decide to finish my claim if the new anime inspires me enough! I only have six or seven pairings left to go, after all. (I can't remember I used "Kiss Me" for the claim or not.)

More SOF

heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Here's my Christmas tree for this year!

And...here's an early Christmas present!

The Longest Night (also posted at AO3)

This is the "missing" chapter of Spirit of Fire I mentioned I was working on, taking place immediately after Chapter Two. I'm not entirely happy with it to be honest, but I'm not sure how many people are even interested in these extra SOF stories after so many years, so I guess it's good enough. Now that I got it out of my system, I can get back to work on finishing Friends With Benefits.

(BTW, I actually just finished another story...but I'm going to keep it a surprise for now. All I'll say is that it's not a Sailor Moon or a Kaleido Star fic, but it is for a fandom I've written for previously. I still have a little more polishing to do on it, but I'll get it posted some time next week, probably.)

Surprise!

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
So, I've actually completed a new story. Not "Friends With Benefits", which I'm currently feeling blocked on, but a new side-story for "Spirit of Fire".

I know!

Seriously, it's been almost nine years since I wrote anything in the "SOF" universe, and I never really expected to write anything more for it, but this high school flashback scene between Minoru and Keitaro randomly popped in my head when I was trying to go to sleep on my birthday and I just had to write it.

What's more, I'm actually working on another "SOF" side story, focusing on what happened the night of Keitaro's and Takara's elopement. I always kind of regretted skipping over the aftermath of that in the belief that it was best to get Rei introduced in the story as soon as possible, so it's turning into a bit of a missing chapter of sorts. I'm already pretty close to finishing it. I think I should have it posted by Thanksgiving, maybe Christmas at the latest, but we'll see.

Anyway, you can read the new story at FF.net or AO3.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I mentioned in my last entry that I hadn't decided what new anime to watch this season, so here's an update on what I've decided to watch: Double Decker! Doug and Kirill, Sword Art Online: Alicization, second season of Ace Attorney, Zombie Land Saga, Tsurune, and Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san. So far, a much better season than the summer!

I kinda wish I hadn't announced that I was writing again. It seems like ever since I decided to make it public, I haven't been able to write as much as I had been writing when it was a secret. It doesn't help that I came up with an idea for a sequel to the story I'm currently working on ("Friends With Benefits"), and it's all shiny and new and I really want to work on it, but that would be kinda dumb when I need to finish this story first... Ah, well. I did post a new -- well, technically old -- story on FF.net yesterday. Remember "Consummation", the story about Keitaro's and Takara's first time? I posted it a long time ago at AO3 but not at FF.net because I didn't want to up the rating of "Spirit of Fire", but I've gone ahead and finally posted it as a one-shot for any SOF fans that don't visit AO3.

It's been a while since I posted about my latest purchases of Sailor Moon merchandise, so here's a round-up!

This actually just came in today -- a Helios/Chibi-Moon cup! (A pic of Pegasus is on the other side.)

I realized that I had plushes of all the other (non-Starlight) senshi except Chibi-Moon for some reason, so I decided it was about time to rectify that oversight. I love that she's holding the Crystal Carillon!

More pics under the cut )
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
How did seven years pass by without me noticing I never posted "To Be By Your Side" over at Archive Of Our Own? (For that matter, how has it been seven years since I wrote that story? It doesn't feel that long ago!) I could have sworn I did, but apparently I didn't. So, I've rectified that oversight, for anybody who may be interested.

Speaking of fanfiction, I have some news that may make a few people happy... ,I've been writing again! Yeah, it's been over two and a half years since I finally finished "Melting Ice" and declared myself in semi-retirement, but I've really been missing fanfiction lately. Maybe I was just burned out when I decided to stop, or maybe this is just a fleeting burst of inspiration... I don't know. I do know that I'm about two-thirds finished with "Friends With Benefits", a sequel to "Blood On His Hands" that I started a little before I decided to quit, and that I'm contemplating between continuing with two Sailor Moon stories after I'm finished. If given a choice, which would you rather me write?

"Metamorphosis", a kinda-prequel-but-not-really to "To Be By Your Side" about how Helios became priest of Elysion in the first place.

or

"Stolen Dreams", a story about (a grown-up, obviously) Chibiusa being seduced by an incubus who wants revenge against Helios.

I'm leaning toward "Metamorphosis" at the moment, but I was further along in "Stolen Dreams" before the break, so it might be easier just to finish that one.

Anyway, I'M NOT PROMISING ANYTHING, but maybe you'll see some new stuff from me in a few months? (I've already decided I'm not going to start posting anything until a story is done. I reserve the right to quit again at any time.)

Now... Summer Anime Review time.

Eh, there's not much to review, though. The continuations of "Major 2nd" and "My Hero Academia" were great, the new season of "Free!" had way too many new characters but was still pretty fun to watch, and I'm watching the "Attack on Titan" dub on Toonami, so I've only watched a few episodes of the new season so far. Not really enough to have a real opinion yet. The only brand new show I watched this season was "Holmes of Kyoto", which I really enjoyed a lot. Don't let the title fool you. The main characters do solve mysteries, but most of them aren't very interesting and it's not really what the show is about. It's actually more of a romance, and I enjoyed the characters.

I haven't actually had a chance yet to decide on what I'll watch this upcoming season, so I'll let y'all know later.

Another fantastic episode of Crystal this week, with the debut of a new version of the OP song, a brand new ED song, and new transformations for Uranus and Neptune! I'm still not totally in love with the OP, but I gotta say the new singer is a lot better than the person who sang it before. Now I kinda like it. The new ED is sung by Chibi-Usa and is SUPER CUTE, although I can't help but feel that it seems really out of place when this season is so dark. The Haruka/Michiru duet worked better as an ending. As for the new transformations, they basically kept the same exact choreography as from the original anime, which is kinda disappointing, but they look really gorgeous otherwise. Moving on to the episode itself, the second half was actually really quite exciting. I think that was about the best battle of the series so far!Spoilers for the very end of the episode and next week's episode )

In other news, I did something a little -- okay, a lot -- nuts yesterday. There was a listing on eBay for this very rare Crystal Carillon plush that can transform into Pegasus when you turn it inside out, which I've been wanting ever since I first came across a picture of it on one of my favorite Sailor Moon collectibles sites. The seller was asking $299 for it, but was also accepting Best Offers. Well, about five or six hours before the listing was set to end, I decided to throw caution to the wind and send in an offer of $100, never expecting it to be accepted but figuring it wouldn't hurt to at least try. The listing ended without me hearing anything back about my offer, so I assumed that was it. However, a few hours later, I got a message from the seller asking if I would be willing to go up to $130. I didn't really want to pay that much to be honest, but there was no telling when or if I would ever get another opportunity like that again. I mean, it was still new in the box and the only one I've ever seen offered up for sale. Based on its apparent rarity, plus knowing what other Pegasus items tend to go for (A LOT), I wouldn't be surprised if it was really worth $200-plus, so how could I possibly pass up the chance to buy it for that price? (Plus, I was still disappointed about losing out on that other Pegasus plush I mentioned a few entries back which ended up selling for $172.) So...I did! It's pretty much the most expensive single item I've ever bought for myself, but I'm calling it my reward for finally finishing Melting Ice. (Speaking of which, the last chapter has been posted at FF.net, AO3, and [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell.) Definitely no more buying stuff on eBay for a while, though. My wallet can't take it!

It's DONE!

Guess what, y'all?

After close to TEN years -- yeah, I just searched through past entries and found out that I started writing this around 2007 -- my Kaleido Star fic "Melting Ice" is finally FINISHED!

*dances in celebration*

I'm going to wait a few days before I do the final look-over and post it, but I am just so deliriously happy to be done with that story. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

BTW, if I ever mention anything on here about wanting to post another WIP, smack some sense into me, okay? (Not that I really plan to do much fanfiction writing anymore -- I consider myself in semi-retirement from fic-writing as of now -- but just saying. You never know.)

Yay!

Yuri!! on Ice Skating Anime Revealed By MAPPA

Finally, a new figure skating anime to join Ginban Kaleidoscope and Pretty Rhythm! Excellent news, and I'm so glad that Sayo Yamamoto is going to be involved. I loved the Endless Night anime short (also about skating) she directed last year, so if this series is animated anywhere near as well, it could be amazing.

In less "Yay" news, I tripped for a second time on a gravel driveway and banged up my left hand pretty bad. I've had to type this whole post one-handed. What really sucks is that I'm thisclose to finishing the last chapter of Melting Ice, and now it's too painful/annoying to work on it. *sigh* Oh, well. I'm struggling a little with the final scene, so I guess I'll take the time to think about how I want it to go while I wait for my hand to heal.

Long time, no post! I was actually hoping to have the final chapter of Melting Ice up today, but that didn't happen. Good news is, I think I'm starting to get out of the writer's block I've been having on that chapter, so I hope it won't be too long before it's finished. *crosses fingers*

To give this post a little more substance, here's an Alphabet Meme taken from [livejournal.com profile] sophiap. Comment with up to three letters at a time and I'll answer them!

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
V - Which character do you relate to most?
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go!

Last day of 2015 and I still haven't finished the last chapter of Melting Ice... Oops. I do have quite a bit of it written, though, including the scene I was most dreading to write: the actual performance of the Lovers' Maneuver. I don't like writing action scenes so I expected to have a terrible time with it, but it actually came to me pretty easily. It's the romance part I'm having trouble with. Well, anyway, I really do plan to finish the story in 2016 (aiming right now for Valentine's Day), so hopefully this will be the absolute last time I make a New Year's promise to complete it.

Now, onto my final thoughts on the anime I watched this season. For me, this was the weakest season of the year, with only one title that I would consider buying if given a physical release. The rest were okay (except for Diabolic Lovers), but nothing I have the desire to rewatch. No real spoilers, but I'll cut anyway.

In no particular order )

As for next season, I'm definitely looking forward to the next season of Snow White With The Red Hair, and I'm tentively planning to check out Erased, Rainbow Days, and maybe Sekko Boys. Oh, and Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R, but only because I watched the original (which I didn't like) and now feel obligated to watch the sequel. (Maybe it'll be better with a full season to work with, though, rather than just a handful of OAV episodes.)

I found out that the website Doll Divine has a new Sailor Senshi Maker, which is more customizable than the previous versions, so I decided to do some mock-ups of some fan senshi I created for my first couple of fics way back when.

First up, we have the Sailor Neo Soldiers from Sweet Dreams. That's Chibiusa at the far left, with Tomoko (Mercury), Anzura (Venus), Katsuna (Mars), Amaya (Jupiter), Shizu (Saturn), Goku (Uranus, my infamous male senshi), Nagisa (Neptune), and Masago (Pluto, who is the love child of Setsuna and Mamoru from Sands of Time, thus making her Chibiusa's half-sister) going down the line. If you want a laugh, check out this post, in which I shared the (badly drawn) fanart I drew of them. I had to make some changes from the drawings due to the options of the maker, but I think they turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Two more under the cut )

Chapter 29 of Melting Ice is posted at FF.net, AO3, and [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell if anybody is interested! Just one more chapter to write... My goal is to definitely finish by the end of the year.
