Okay, so there's this character in Kaleido Star named Kalos Eido, who is the owner of Kaleido Stage. For the longest time, I had no idea what his ethnic background was supposed to be. When he's wearing his glasses, which is most of the time, he can easily pass for Hispanic, black, Mediterranean, or Middle Eastern, but then he has these really light blue eyes that don't really seem to fit, you know? It didn't help matters that some KS sites translate his first name as Carlos, an understandable mistake since "r" and "l" in Japanese sound pretty much the same, and Carlos is an actual name, while Kalos sounds like something somebody made up. Adding to the confusion was the fact that googling "Eido" brought up references to it being Arabic, Greek, Japanese, or Spanish in origin. Since I've always thought his name sounded most like a Greek name, though, that's the assumption I've been going by while I've been writing my KS multi-part.
Well, today, by pure chance, I happened to look up the word "kaleidoscope" on Wikipedia. What did I find?
The word "kaleidoscope" was derived by Brewster from the Greek kalos, eidos, and skopos; meaning beautiful, form, and view, respectively.
So I was right! Kalos does have a Greek background, but what I found even more interesting was that the owner of Kaleido Stage got his name from the word "kaleidoscope". I've never seen that mentioned anywhere before (unlike with most name word plays in anime, which are usually well known), so it's a fun little piece of trivia for a KS fan like me. ^_^ (Although I have to admit it also makes me feel a little stupid, too, since now that I know, I realize that it is really quite obvious that's where his name came from. Duh, Yume!)
