Some thoughts on Kunzite
Jul. 27th, 2008 07:42 pmI finished rewatching the first season of Sailor Moon a couple of days ago -- yes, I decided to embark on my plans for a SM marathon -- and you know what? Despite generally being considered the strongest (and presumably smartest) of the Shitennou, Kunzite's plans to discover Sailor Moon's identity are really idiotic. Yeah, I know the show supports itself by setting up convenient coincidences so that at least one of the senshi is bound to be around when there's trouble, but most of the villains aren't trying to get senshi's attention like Kunzite is.
The beauty parlor episode? Matching the hair strand was a good idea, but what if Minako never convinced Usagi to get a makeover? Those beauticians could have been stuck giving free makeovers forever (or at least until they went out of business).
The finishing school episode? Again, finding a girl that was good with a frisbee was a decent idea (although lots of girls are probably good at it), but what guarantee was there that Usagi would join the class? Especially when it was originally only open to rich girls (at least according to the dub).
The ski bunny episode? That was just a bad plan, no matter how you look at it. I don't even understand what the reasoning was behind Kunzite's plan. It was out of town, the resort was booked, and why he even thought Sailor Moon would be good at skiing, I have no idea. Just holding a "Moon Princess" contest doesn't mean the winner will actually be the real Moon Princess, Kunzite. *rolls eyes*
The ice skating episode? Well, I'm not going to complain about it too much because it's actually my favorite episode of the first season (and one of my favorites of the entire series), but it still relied too much on coincidence, and just because Princess Serenity used to be a good skater was no reason to believe Usagi/Sailor Moon was, as she so memorably proved.
I think you get the picture. *laughs* At least when Jadeite wanted to fight with the senshi, he gave them a public invitation to meet him, and even Nephrite's plans to find out Sailor Moon's secret identity were a little more thought out than Kunzite's. Kunzite...just wasn't that great a strategist. The only plan that actually had a good chance of working was contacting Katarina, who was a known friend of Sailor V, but even then, he didn't handle it that as well as he could. For example, he could have tortured or brainwashed Katarina into telling him who Sailor V was, kidnapped Minako, then ransomed her off in exchange for Sailor Moon and the Silver Crystal. Wouldn't that have made more sense?
How did he become the highest ranking of the Shitennou again?
