Hehe. Here's a little scene of dialogue for today's sm_monthly challenge.
“You’re amazing. How can you so calmly sit there reading a book as if nothing potentially life-changing was happening?”
“It’s a good book. It’s about this tomboy named Scout who’s growing up in this rural Alabama town--”
“I know what To Kill a Mockingbird is about. You gave me a copy for my last birthday.”
“Oh, right. I forgot.”
“Give me that! If I’m going to be nervous, you’re going to be nervous too!”
“It’s one date. It’s not as if they’re going to get married.”
“They might.”
“I think you’re getting a bit ahead of yourself, but I know how you must feel.”
“How would you know?”
“I was nervous too when okaa-san started dating again. Up until then, I had held on to the small hope that my parents might get back together, but when she went on that first date after the divorce, I knew it was over.”
“My situation is a little different, though.”
“Yes, I know. Gomen, I didn‘t mean--”
“It’s okay. Honestly, though, I don’t know why I’m so upset about this. I really shouldn’t care at all. It’s not like he ever cares what I do. What interest is it to me what he does in his personal life?”
“Perhaps because you feel like he’s betraying your mother’s memory?”
“Maybe… A little.”
“It has been over ten years. Don’t you think he deserves the chance to find love again?”
“No.”
“You don’t really mean that, do you?”
“Yes, I do. He was never around when I was growing up, always focused on his political career. He barely even acknowledged that he had a wife and daughter unless it was campaign season and it helped paint him as a ‘family man’ with the voters. I remember okaa-sama was always so sad…”
“Maybe he’s changed.”
“I’d like to think that, but I don’t think it will ever happen. That’s why I’m so surprised that you’re so calm about this date. Don’t you think your mother deserves better than a workaholic politician?”
“Actually, when you put it that way, they seem like a perfect match -- the workaholic politician and the workaholic doctor.”
“Be serious!”
“I am. I admit your father wouldn’t be my first pick for okaa-san, but it’s her choice who she dates. As long as she’s happy, I’m happy, and based on how cheerful she seemed while getting dressed, she really seems to like your father.”
“I don’t see the attraction.”
“Well, your father is rather handsome…”
“I can’t believe you just said that! You’re blushing!”
“I-I’m not. I mean…”
“Has the whole world gone absolutely mad?”
“What I was trying to say before is that your father is an attractive, intelligent man. I don’t think it’s that unbelievable that they would like each other.”
“Maybe not, but I still don’t like it. And where are they? Didn’t your mom tell you that they would be back by eleven?
“Yes, but it’s only ten after. I’m sure they’ll be back soon.”
“I hope you’re right. I don’t want to imagine what they’re doing if they’re not.”
“Y-You don’t think they would…?”
“Is your mother the type?”
“N-No! At least I don’t think so. Your father?”
“How the heck should I know? I barely know him.”
“Oh, right.”
“Heh. You‘re nervous now, aren’t you?”
“Yes.”
“That’s all I asked.”
