Talking about writing

Man, I totally forgot that for the December monthly writing challenge at

Speaking of time, I probably won't be posting a new chapter of Melting Ice next month, since I have next to nothing written for it. Just a heads up. There's just way too much going on at

To cap off this writing update, here's an interesting meme I happened to come across:
I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" Which isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!
I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.
And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.
So, if you wanted, ask me questions!
What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? And so on.
In a nutshell, feel free to ask me "why" or "how" questions about any of my stories.

on 2010-12-09 07:17 pm (UTC)2. For, SOF, why didn't you go into Rei's fathers story and have him reveal it to Rei to sort of put weight into their reconciliation?
I guess with both, it just seemed abrupt that everything would be ok without any sort of explanation.

on 2010-12-09 08:03 pm (UTC)2. To be clear, at the end of SOF, Rei and her father are not totally reconciled. They're both open to the idea, but they still have a lot to work through. It was meant to be an open-ended ending. As for why he didn't tell Rei his story at the cemetery... Well, his story had already been told. Rei might not have known it, but the reader did. There was really no need to regurgitate it in that scene. Plus, it was raining! Who wants to tell their entire life story in the rain? *laughs* When Kwitaro took her home, I'm sure he probably went into more detail, but I didn't want to end on a complete reconciliation. The fact that they were finally willing to hear each other out was ending enough in my opinion.

on 2010-12-10 01:23 am (UTC)I would ask you about ATR if I were not present for a large share of the creative process involved there. Hmm. How about Only Human? *thinks*
What are your feelings about that story, all these years on?
