Man, that was nerve-wracking!
None of the Americans made the podium, but they all did well: Gracie in fourth, Ashley in seventh, and Polina in ninth. All in the top ten, which I think is fabulous! And Gracie and Ashley both have a bronze medal from the team event, so I'm not that disappointed that they didn't medal here. It was a bit of a long shot chance, anyway, after Yuna, Adelina, and Carolina skated so well in the short. As predicted, they're the medalists, although Adelina pulled up over Yuna to win the gold. I'm not really a huge fan of any of them, but I am glad that Carolina was finally able to have a good Olympics after doing so terribly in the last two (and her Ave Maria short program was just breath-taking -- the first program of hers I've really loved). And Mao... I'm just in awe of her. Sixteenth after the short, yet she comes back to make history by landing eight triples -- including a freakin' triple axel -- and post the third highest score in the free skate, moving up to sixth overall. If only she hadn't had such a terrible short! Out of the gold medal favorites coming into the Olympics, she was the one I really wanted to win. Such a shame. Oh, well.
