Happy New Year!

Let's hope I can finally, finally, FINALLY finish Melting Ice this year. Gah, it feels like I've been writing that story for a decade now...

And now that the Fall anime season is ending, I hope to have a final review of the shows I watched posted sometime next week, after I finish watching a last few episodes, so look forward to that!

Didn't get the chance to talk about the new Crystal episode this morning due to Livejournal not working, so hopefully I'll remember everything I wanted to mention.

Spoilers ahead )

Eh, it was an okay episode, but not a great one. Probably my least favorite so far, or at least tied with Mercury's. I think the writers need to be more careful when they deviate from the manga, keeping in mind that when they do make changes (like the ones I mentioned in points 9 & 10), they can't just keep other things that should be affected by the change the same.

In other news, I'm almost finished with the next chapter of Melting Ice! (On the last scene.) I couldn't babysit the nephew this week because I had a cold, so I actually had time to sit down and concentrate on my writing for a change. Everything I wrote is probably crappy, but, hey, at least it's progess.

Just came across this writing meme from [livejournal.com profile] sophiap that looks like fun, so I'll give it a whirl. Maybe it'll actually get me excited about my writing again. (Really, really, really need to get the next chapter of Melting Ice posted, but, ugh, I just can't get over this block I'm in with that story.)

Anyway, comment to this entry with the letter of a question you want me to answer. (Try to limit it to about three at a time. You can ask for more after I answer your first letters.)

Usually I would be doing the usual "Year in Fic" meme like I do every year, but since I only posted three stories last year -- Melting Ice (Kaleido Star), Salvation (Sailor Moon), and Private Christmas (Harry Potter) -- it doesn't seem worth the trouble. I will say, though, that my top goal for 2014 is finishing Melting Ice. It will be done. *imitates Sora Naegino* It will, it will, IT WILL!

Remember earlier this year, when I mentioned I had started a Percy/Penelope Christmas fic set during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets but had decided to put it on hold until it was closer to Christmas? Well, even though I just remembered its existence a little over a week ago, I actually managed to finish it! Private Christmas has been posted at all the usual places, including my writing journal, [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell. I wish I could have spent a little more time on it before posting, but I wanted to get it out before Christmas, so I hope you enjoy it as is. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

First off, Chapter 27 of Melting Ice has been posted in the usual places. I've also updated [livejournal.com profile] oyster_shell so it is now up-to-date. I didn't realize I was so behind on posting things there!

Now, onto the main point of this entry... The past few days, I've been thinking about getting an e-reader. I love having physical books, especially manga, but it is getting to the point that I'm running out of places to put them! An e-reader would definitely help with that. Plus, there are some out of print manga volumes I want that are very expensive to buy used (if you can even find them) but are easy and cheap to buy digitally. I just don't know what kind to get. An iPad would probably be best, but they're out of my price range. Besides, I don't need anything fancy. I can play music and use apps on my iPod touch, so I basically just want something I can read books, manga, and magazines on. At the moment, I'm leaning toward a Nook, particularly the Nook HD+ 9" tablet. Yeah, I know what I just said about not needing anything fancy, but at only $150, it seems like a pretty good deal, and I like that it has a larger screen size like the iPad. (Probably easier to read manga on.) My one concern is that I'm not sure how much longer Barnes & Noble is going to stay in business. If they shut down, what will happen with the Nook? So, I'm also eyeing the Kindle Fire HD. The screen is only 7", but, eh, it is a little cheaper than the Nook HD+, and I have more confidence in the company. And there's also the basic Kindle and Nook to consider. The prices are much more to my liking (under $100), and like I said, I don't need the frills...but I do kinda want some color, which the basic e-readers don't have. Gah, I don't know!

Anybody out there have experience with either a Kindle or a Nook? Have you read manga on them, and do they look okay on a smaller screen? Any thoughts on which kind I should get? Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Boo!

Happy Halloween!

Sorry, I kind of disappeared there for a couple of weeks. I've been around; just haven't had much to post about. Actually, I don't have much to say today either, other than I hope to have the next chapter of Melting Ice posted sometime next week. *crosses fingers* I've had pretty much the worst case of Writer's Block/Writer's Blues ever, but the chapter is finally close to being finished.(Thank goodness! Although I won't promise that it'll be a good chapter...) My goal of finishing the story by the end of the year? Yeah, I don't see that happening. I'm not even sure I'll get the next chapter done by the end of the year. To be honest, I'm starting to hate the story at this point. It might be a good idea to take a break and work on something else until I can find the love to finish MI again, rather than trying to write on a deadline. We'll see.

I was reorganizing some files on my computer today when I came across these pictures. They're Sims I made of all the major (and some-not-so-major) characters from Spirit of Fire. I made them over a year ago, but I never got around to posting them. Well, better late than never, right? Hope you enjoy!

Lots of images, but small .jpg files )

Finally! Chapter 26 of Melting Ice is done and posted at the usual places. Seems like rewatching the series gave me the kick I needed to finish it.

Now, to reward myself, I'm going to install the Sims Medieval game that just arrived from Amazon and relax a bit before trying to figure out what the heck Chapter 27 is going to be about...

Icons!

So, guess what I discovered yesterday on my laptop? Photoshop Elements 10! Yeah, I've had this computer for about a year and I just now noticed it. I'm very observant, you know. -_- Although, to be fair, none of my previous computers ever came with awesome graphics programs already installed so I had no reason to look for it.

Anyway, I'm still stuck on that stupid Melting Ice chapter, so what better way to procrastinate working on a Kaleido Star fanfic than to make Kaleido Star icons? These are all pretty basic, since I've just been fooling around, seeing how things work, but if you see any you like, feel free to take.

Ten more here )

By the way, is there anybody who can tell me how to do text? Or knows of an easy to follow online tutorial? I just can't seem to figure it out, and it's starting to drive me a little crazy!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Yeah, I'm really no closer to finishing the next Melting Ice chapter than I was the last time I posted...oh, about two weeks ago. It's just too dang hot to write. The heat has zapped away all my creativity. So, don't count on it being posted by the end of this month like I said last time. It'll be a miracle if I can get it out before the end of summer...
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
If there are any fans of Melting Ice reading this and wondering why a new chapter hasn't been posted yet, well, I'm still working on it. I'm just unbelievably STUCK. It's my own fault, though. I had trouble with the last chapter, too, so I randomly decided to have Mikhail's sister Ekaterina show up, even though I only planned for her to maybe show up in one scene right before the opening of the show. Now that she's here several chapters too early, I just can't seem to figure out what to do with her. I have some vague ideas, but nothing is really gelling, and it's very frustrating since the rest of the scenes that don't feature her are mostly finished.

ARGH!

So, my new goal is to have the chapter done by the end of June. *crosses fingers* Sorry for the wait!

An update

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Gah, April is halfway over, and I haven't posted a single entry this month! Well, it's not like there's much to report anyway. I finally managed to get over my block on Melting Ice after taking a short break to work on a couple of scenes from that Chibi-Usa/Helios incubus story I mentioned last time. I'm not totally happy with this chapter, but I guess it'll do. I plan to post it either tomorrow or Friday at the usual places.

And just because I have nothing else to talk about, here's a couple of silly quiz results:

You Should Learn Swedish

Fantastisk! You're laid back about learning a language - and about life in general.

Peaceful, beautiful Sweden is ideal for you... And you won't even have to speak perfect Swedish to get around!

Huh, never would have picked Swedish myself...

You Are China

You adhere to the ideas of loyalty, honesty, sincerity, and duty.

You respect authority and age. You believe in social harmony.

You are big and bold. People consider you to be someone with a lot of potential.

You are coming into your own right now, and you are figuring out your place in the world.

The first part is fairly accurate. Not so sure about the other half, though.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)

Gah, I'm supposed to be focusing on Melting Ice, so why do I keep getting plot bunnies for other stories? It's so frustrating!

Somehow, despite my resolve to focus only on Melting Ice, I've started two -- TWO! -- more stories over the course of the last month. One is a Harry Potter Christmas story. I've been rereading the series, and while reading the Christmas chapter in CoS where Harry and Ron are trying to sneak into the Slytherins' common room, I was curious as to what exactly Percy and Penelope were up to in the dungeons. I've written a couple of scenes so far, but I think I've managed to convince myself to wait until closer to Christmas to continue it. By then, Melting Ice should be done (hopefully), and it'll be more fun to write when it's actually Christmas time.

The second story is much more of a problem, because I really, really, REALLY want to write it now. Has anybody read the manga Demon Love Spell? I picked up the first two volumes last week and really enjoyed them. It's about the unlikely romance between a Shinto priestess and a sex-crazed incubus, and it reminded me that I always did want to wrhite a Helios/Chibi-Usa story featuring an incubus as a villain. I actually did use an incubus and a succubus as minor monsters in one of my first fanfics (Star-Crossed Lovers, I think?), but this story line is a lot more interesting, in which a revenge-seeking incubus takes the guise of Helios and seduces Chibi-Usa in her dreams, eventually managing to convince her to live with him in her dreams forever. The real Helios then has to find a way to awaken her from her never-ending dream before she dies.

Man, I'd much rather be working on that than Melting Ice... I'm so stuck on that story, it's not even funny. *sigh* Maybe it would be better to work on something else for at least a couple of weeks...

heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I'm a week late announcing it, but Chapter 24 of Melting Ice is posted at the usual places.

And...that's about it to report. This week is the figure skating world championships, but since we no longer get Universal Sports, I won't be able to see any of it until the two hour recap show on NBC the Saturday after next. *sigh* Still keeping my eye on the results, though, and hoping the Americans do well enough to earn an extra men's and ladies' spot in next year's Olympics. (Might be tough for Max and Ross to pull off considering their current standings, but Ashley and Gracie still have a fighting chance, I think, especially if Gracie skates her free like she did at Nationals.)

*crosses fingers*

Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

Nothing much to report, except that Salvation has been posted at the usual places. It really more appropriate for Halloween instead of Valentine's, but I hope you'll read anyway! ^_^
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Chapter 23 of Melting Ice is posted at the usual places, finishing off the backlog of chapters I had already completed. Now it's back to actual writing. Hopefully I can get the next chapter done by March.

Salvation -- my AU Sailor Moon vampire story -- is also pretty much done. By the way, the position of beta reader is still open if anybody is interested.

And...that's pretty much it, I guess.
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
I'm almost finished with "Salvation", my Sailor Moon AU Chibi-Usa/Helios vampire fic. Depending on whether or not I get picked to serve on a jury -- I go in for jury duty on Monday, unless it gets cancelled -- I'm hoping to have it done by the end of next week, and I would like to post it on Valentine's Day (even though it's really more of a Halloween-type story...) if I can. So, I was just wondering if anybody would be interested in being a beta reader? Not so much for spelling/grammar since I have a good grasp on those, but it is set in a made-up country that is supposed to have a Victorian-era feel, so it would be good to know if anything seems too much out of place. I did some research, but I'm far from an expert.

The story will be roughly about 25,000 words. If you're interested but don't think you'll have time to finish before V-Day, that's totally fine, by the way. That's just a random deadline, but I'm okay with posting it later.

Thanks!
heavenly_pearl: (Default)
Gah, January is halfway over, and I haven't updated this thing yet this year! And I meant to be better about posting... Oh, well. Nothing much to report anyway. Went to see Les Miserables today -- AMAZING! I think I cried at least three or four times. Also picked up some manga from Half-Price Books: a complete set of Land of the Blindfolded and Castle of Dreams, a short story collection from the mangaka of Kare Kano. I love finding a full series for super-cheap!

Hmm, anything else? Oh, I posted Ch. 22 of "Melting Ice" earlier this month at the usual places, if anybody is interested.

That's about it in the life of Yume.

2012: A Year in Review )

In other news, guess who managed to find a decently-priced Man of Many Faces Vol. 2 on the Amazon Marketplace? I did! Usually they're ridiculously expensive, so I was going to exclude the series from my "collect all CLAMP series" goal, but it seems like the prices are finally going down. I got both volumes for about $20. *dances* Now I'm on the hunt for a cheap Kobato. Vol. 5, which seems to be out of print already. (Strange for a relatively new CLAMP series.) Amazon seems to still be selling them for retail price, but they don't have any currently in stock, and I'm not confident they'll ever get anymore in because the cheapest one I found on the Marketplace was for $97! Nobody would sell it for that much if it was still easy to find retail.
