One year

One year today, [personal profile] samuraiter asked me to be his girlfirend.

Unfortunately, Valentine's and today were a bit ruined since we couldn't have our usual afternoon chat due to a power outage on his end, but he did call me a little earlier to say "Happy Anniversary." So nice to hear his voice.

I have a great boyfriend. ^_^

You know what? My boyfriend was evil to send me my Valentine's Day/anniversary present so early. :P The package came in last Saturday, and it's just been sitting there, whispering, "Open me, Yume, open me," every time I look over at it. I don't think I was evem this excited to open all my Christmas presents a couple of months ago! So doesn't help that he's been really stingy with the clues, and the presents are inside the package so I can't see what shapes they are.

Gah! I wanna open it now!

*goes to get a knife, but stops self just in time*

In other news, Mom and I went to my aunt and uncle's yesterday for a visit. My cousin Amy, who lives in Virginia, was down here with her new baby, Zachary, who we met for the first time, and oh, my! He's such a cute baby! Mom and I barely let him go the entire time we were there. He was just so good-natured and sweet... I love babies. ^_^

...and I'm a Right Stuf -aholic.

Seriously, though. I'm still waiting on some back-ordered things from my previous two orders, yet when I bought another $100 Visa gift card (love those things) at the grocery store today, I just had to blow it all the second I got home.

How could I resist buying the entire Wedding Peach series when they were selling it for only $5 a disc, though? I also went ahead and pre-ordered the next Fruits Basket volume and the next two volumes of Absolute Boyfriend, so I don't have to worry about getting those for a while. Plus, I also got a cute Shigure plushie, an adorable Jonathan the Seal (from Kaleido Star) plushie, and yet another gift for Samuraiter, who is going to be so spoiled for our first Valentine's Day/first anniversary, it's not even funny. ^_^ (Yes, I managed to get all of that for under a $100. How great is this site?)

At least I now almost have all the anime series I've been wanting. Really all I need now is the Rah-Xephon boxset and Kaleido Star Season 2, which hasn't come out with a boxset as of yet (or been featured in one of Right Stuf's sales), and I'll be up to date until I find some other series I want. I kind of wanted the Noir boxset as well, but to be honest, I really just wanted it it for the music, especially the awesome opening song, so I think I'll probably just get the soundtrack.

Edit: Man, I just looked at the front page and realized that they were having a sale on VIZ titles this weekend, 40% off DVDs and 33% off manga. If I had known that, I could have gotten the Ayashi no Ceres anime for a great price. :( Granted, it wasn't on my wish list and I do have all the manga already, but still, I would have been interested. Also could have used the code on my Absolute Boyfriend pre-orders, but, eh, that's no big deal.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

That's a tough question to answer. I guess I would have to say I wrote more than I predicted, since my only real goal for the year was to finish the rough draft of Against the Rules, which I did, but I also wrote a few shorts and a 50,000 word Nano novel.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2006?

Definitely Fire Emblem. I never in a hundred years thought I would ever write a video game fic, but after playing the game and falling in love with the Artur/Lute pairing, I couldn't resist writing a fic as a surprise anniversary gift for my boyfriend, who loves Fire Emblem.

What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

I don't really know why, but I have to say my Fruits Basket fic, Kiss Me. It's just so cute and romantic, and I really think I did a good job with Mayu's character.

Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?

I think I took two big risks in 2006. One was participating in Nanowrimo for the first time and concentrating on a piece of original fiction. The resulting story, Mothers of the Bride, was not good, but it did teach me that I can write more than a couple of pages a day if I put my mind to it. The second risk was writing quite a bit of non-Sailor Moon fics. I wrote fics for Fire Emblem, Fruits Basket, and Someday's Dreamers, and those allowed me to try some different things with different characters.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?

Well, finishing posting Against the Rules is a definite goal, but that shouldn't be hard, considering the story is basically done. Just need to have my editors look over the last half.

As for new writing projects for the new year, I'm still really in the planning phase. I am starting a Kaleido Star short today, but that's the only thing set in stone so far. Among the possibilities for my next multi-part, however, are a Witch Hunter Robin/Sailor Moon crossover and another Kaleido Star story.

From my past year of writing, what was...

My Favorite Story:

As I said before, Kiss Me.

My Best Story:

I want to say Against the Rules, but to be honest, there's quite a bit I don't like about it, so I guess I'll go with Kiss Me again, since I think that's the story I was most happy with.

Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe:

Definitely my Someday's Dreamers fic, A Dream Come True, for the sole reason that nobody reads Someday's Dreamers fics.

Most Fun:

Kiss Me? Eh, I don't think any of my stories in 2006 were particularly fun.

Most Disappointing:

I would have to say Mothers of the Bride, my Nano story. I had such high hopes for it, but it ended up pretty crappy, probably since the nature of the contest was to focus more on quantity, rather than quality.

Most Sexy:
Against the Rules, without a doubt. In fact, I'm surprised myself by how sexy it is, since I don't usually write like that. It definitely earns its R rating, though.

Story with a Single Sexy Moment:

A story with only one sexy moment? That would be Kiss Me. Mayu and Hatori just kiss, but I still think it is pretty sexy.

Hardest to Write:

Against the Rules, at least parts of it. My own fault, really, since I wrote most of it completely out of order. If I had stayed more linear, it probably wouldn't have been so bad.

Most Unintentionally Telling:

Unintenionally telling? Hmm... I guess I would have to go with Against the Rules, but I'm not telling why. *laughs*

Remember how annoyed I was when the B&N website took the sale price off the Planet of the Apes boxset I wanted to get my mother, so I went ahead and just bought it a little bit cheaper at Best Buy?

Well, today I got a one-day coupon in my email for 25% off one item at the website.

Yep, you guessed it. If I had just waited until today, I could have gotten the boxset cheaper at the website. *sigh* Well, at least I don't have to worry about it not coming in before Christmas, although it probably would have anyway with the usual three-day free shipping.

On the plus side, though, I did get a couple of things for me: a Charlotte Church CD called Tissues and Issues that I've never been able to find anywhere else, and I used the coupon on something I'm not sure if I'll keep for myself or give to my sweetie as a Valentine's/first anniversary gift, so I'm not mentioning it here.

I did it!

I finished Fire Emblem!

I'm really quite proud of myself. The first time I attempted the game, I was getting characters killed right and left, so much so that I wasn't able to get pass the desert battle (Ch. 15, I think) with the characters remaining. The second time, though, I managed to get by with only five casualties through the whole game: Forde (in a stupid arena battle during Ch. 10), Dolza (in Ch. 19), L'Arachel (last chapter), Neimi (last chapter), and Kyle (last chapter). Actually, if you want to get technical, in the epilogue, L'Arachel is just listed as "wounded" since she was needed storywise after she died, so really only four people truly "died". I think that's quite an improvement over my disasterous first attempt. ^_^

It only took me two tries to defeat the final boss as well, which is really quite amazing, considering that he's tough. I think he had over a hundred HP, and just one hit of his attack was enough to kill almost any single character. Luckily, though, Seth had 48 HP when he got there, which was more than the boss could dole out at a time, so with a little help from Seleh's wonderful Physic torch and Seth's special weapon (which name I can't spell without looking it up), it really wasn't that bad. It was just figuring what to do that was difficult.

And, boy, I sound very much like a gamer. ^_^

Now that I've finished with both the games I own, though, I can finally get back to work on fics without distraction. ^_^ I actually started a new story this week, if you can believe it, but I can't go into details in here, because I intend it as a gift for Samuraiter for our sixth month anniversary in August. All I will say at this time is that it's for a fandom I've never written for before and that it's going very, very well so far.

You know what I just realized? Yesterday was my fourth anniversary at ASMR.

Does anybody happen to know what's going on there? I haven't been able to get on all day. It keeps saying that it can't find the site. Man, that would suck if yesterday was the last day for ASMR, although also kinda cool in a way, since I would be one of the last of the members who could claim that they were there for four years.

Well, hopefully, whatever it is, it'll be fixed soon. I don't post there as much as I used to, but it would still be sad if it's gone forever. (Not to mention most of the links I have posted in the "Library" section of my website would be broken...)

And now...some random quizzes!

You Are Apple Red

You're never one to take life too seriously, and because of it, you're a ton of fun.
And although you have a great sense of humor, you are never superficial.
Deep and caring, you do like to get to the core of people - to understand them well.
However, any probing you do is light hearted and fun, sometimes causing people to misjudge you.

You Are Jan Brady

Brainy and a little introverted, you tend to think life is a lot worse than it actually is.
And while you may think you're a little goofy looking, most people consider you to be a major babe.

You Are Scooter

Brainy and knowledgable, you are the perfect sidekick.
You're always willing to lend a helping hand.
In any big event or party, you're the one who keeps things going.
"15 seconds to showtime!"

Since I don't want anybody to get mad at me for spoiling them...

RahXephon spoilers )

The thing that's bugging me, though, is that pretty little tune Quon is always singing. I know I've heard that song before, or at least something with a very similar melody. It's driving me crazy that I can't remember where it's from. I think I may even have it on a CD, but without a title, that's like looking for a needle in a haystack with all the CDs I own. Samuraiter, any ideas?

In other news, I think I'm going to wait to post A Dream Come True at FF.net and ASMR. I still plan to go ahead and post it on my website, since today is the one year anniversary, but I still don't think it's quite ready for the major archives. *sigh* I wish I could get a second opinion on it, but I don't really know many other Someday's Dreamers fans.

Finished!

I'm finally finished with my Someday's Dreamers fic! Well, actually, I still want to go back and tweak some things, but the important thing is that the basic story is finished. It'll probably be posted at FF.net, ASMR (under the General Anime section that hardly anybody reads), and my Someday's Dreamers website by this weekend, since I want it to be a first anniversary special for my site.

I'm not really sure if I particularly like it, but it does feel good to complete something. At least I think it's somewhat better than the two other stories I've read in the fandom. That's something, right.

Hey...

Heh, I don't really know what to write in this thing now that baseball's over. It was kind of nice having something interesting to talk about on game nights, a little excitement in my otherwise very dull life. ^_^

Well, I guess I could talk about my Someday's Dreamers fic. It's almost finished. I just have to finish up the last scene, go back to work on the third(?) scene, which was giving me problems, and polish up the rest. I should probably meet my goal of finishing before my birthday, which actually has an extra benefit. I didn't realize it until a few days ago, but on the fifth of next month, the website I made dedicated to the series (http://www.freewebs.com/kaze_no_hana/index.htm) will be celebrating its first anniversary, so I think it'll be nice to post the story there as kind of a gift for the few people who visit it. (Heh, one year and the counter hasn't even made it to 200, most of those hits being mine thanks to a lack of exposure. I recently had to go volunteer to be the new editor for the Someday's Dreamers section of a web directory just so I could finally get my page on the major search engines.)

The story itself...is very teeny-bopper. Unfortunately. Still, I think I managed to make it somewhat realistic in how Masami deals with Milinda's feelings for him. It's not an "I love you/I love you, too/Let's go off, get married, and have lots of kids" kind of story. I'm actually rather proud of the way I handled that part.

I'm just afraid I completely assassinated Milinda's character in the process. She's so flaky in this story. I do think her actions are somewhat understandable, considering she's finally confessing her love to the guy she's loved for over a decade, but I might have gone too far. >.<

However, it's still better than the other two stories in the fandom, so I guess I'm happy.
